  • The state of in situ stress is an important factor in considering the suitability of a site as a geological repository for nuclear waste. In this study, three-dimensional distinct numerical analysis was conducted to investigate the effect of deformation zones on the state of stress in the Oskarshamn area, which is one of two candidate sites in Sweden. A discontinuum numerical model was constructed by explicitly representing the numerous deformation zones identified from site investigation and far-field tectonic stress was applied in the constructed model. The numerical model successfully captured the variation of measured stress often observed in the rock mass containing large-scale fractures, which shows that numerical analysis can be an effective tool in improving the understanding of the state of stresses. Discrepancies between measured and modelled stress are attributed to the inconsistent quality of measured stress, uncertainty in geological geometry. and input data for fractures.

  • For total system performance of a potential radwaste repository, a hypothetical site is assumed with feasible boundary conditions. Assuming a coastal repository, the sensitivity of the depth and the location of a repository along with the distance to a joint on groundwater transport pathways is studied. Results from Connectflow analysis could be used as input of the MASCOT-t the probabilistic safety assessment code.

  • A comparison study is performed to understand the coupling behavior of the thermal, hydraulic, and mechanical interactions in the vicinity of an underground radwaste repository, assumed to be located at a depth of 500 m, within a granitic rock mass with a 58$^{\circ}$ dipping fault passing through the roof-wall intersection of the repository cavern. The two dimensional universal distinct element code, UDEC is used for the analysis. The model includes a granitic rock meas, a canister with PWR spent fuels surrounded by the compacted bentonite inside a deposition hole, and the mixed bentonite backfilled in the rest of the space within a repository cavern. The coupling behavior of hydromechanical, thermomechanical, and thermohydromechanical interaction has been studied and compared. The effect of the time-dependent decaying heat, from the radioactive materials in PWR spent fuels, on the repository and its surroundings has been studied. A steady state flow algorithm is used for the hydraulic analysis.

  • A safety assessment computer code CALM (Computer program of Assessment for LILW Management) is developed for the theoretical prediction of long-term safety of low-and intermediate-level radioactive waste disposal. CALM is composed of three submodels, which are the resaturation model, the geosphere migration model, and the radiation dose model. For the verification of its usefulness, the safety assessment of an assumed waste repository is performed. The results show that the computer code, CALM developed through this study can be a useful tool for the safety assessment of low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste repository.
