  • A fuzzy logic based data integration was applied for geothermal potential mapping in Jeju Island. Several data sets, such as geological map, the density of drainage system, the distribution density of cinder cones, density of lineaments, aerial survey map for total magnetic intensity and total gamma ray, were collected as thematic map for the integration. Fuzzy membership function for all thematic maps were compared to the locations of the spa, which were used as ground-truth control points. The older geology, the lower density of drainage, cinder cones and lineaments, and the lower intensity of magnetic and gamma ray were showed the higher fuzzy membership function values, respectively. After integrating all thematic maps, the results of gamma operator with the gamma value of 0.75 was the highest success rate, and new geothermal potential zone is prospected in western north part of Jeju Island.

  • This study, combining geophysical and environmental approaches, was undertaken to investigate the causes of secondary salinity in the Goondoola basin, in southwestern Queensland. Airborne radiometric, electromagnetic and ground electromagnetic datasets were acquired, along with data on soils and subsurface materials and groundwater. Relationships established between radiometric, elevation data, and measured material properties allowed us to generate predictive maps of surface materials and recharge potential. Greatest recharge to the groundwater is predicted to occur on the weathered bedrock rises surrounding the basin. Electromagnetic data (airborne, ground, and downhote), used in conjunction with soil and drillhole measurements, were used to quantify regolith salt store and to define the subsurface architecture. Conductivity measurements reflect soil salt distribution. However, deeper in the regolith, where the salt content is relatively constant, the AEM signal is influenced by changes in porosity or material type. This allowed the lateral distribution of bedrock weathering zones to be mapped. Salinisation in this area occurs because of local-andintermediate-scale processes, controlled strongly by regolith architecture. The present surface outbreak is the result of evaporative concentration above shallow saline groundwater, discharging at break of slope. The integration of surficial and subsurface datasets allowed the identification of similar landscape settings that are most at risk of developing salinity with groundwater rise. This information is now being used by local land managers to refine management choices that prevent excess recharge and further salt mobilisation.

  • Geophysical data sets from the Chojeong area in the Chungbok-Do are compositely studied in terms of multi-attribute interpretations for the subsurface mappings of shallow fracture zones, associated with groundwater reservoir. Utilizing a GIS software, the attribute data were implemented to a database; a lineament from the satellite image, electrical resistivities and its standard deviation, radioactivity, seismic velocity, and bedrock depth. In an attempt to interpret 1-D electrical sounding data in 3-D views, 1-D data are firstly performed horizontal and vertical inter- and extrapolation. Reconstruction of a resistivity volume is found to be an effective scheme for subsurface mapping of shallow fracture zones. Shallow fracture zones are located in the southeastern part of the study area, which are commonly correlated with the various exploration data.

  • Regional airborne magnetic survey is very cost-effective mapping tool. Magnetic anomaly maps have abundant information, which are an important tool for understanding the geological evolution and mineral exploration. For this reason, the governments of many countries have made significant investment in the acquisition of airborne geophysical data over many decades. KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources) began nationwide airborne magnetic mapping programme in 1982, and completed in 2017. The obtained magnetic data was reprocessed and magnetic database was built in 2018. In addition, the magnetic anomaly map of Korea with a scale of 1:1,000,000 was published. In this paper, we introduced a new magnetic anomaly map of Korea through describing the changing survey parameters during data acquisitions and history of data processing.

  • Ilmenite mine was developed in the anorthosites which intruded Precambrian Jirisan gneiss complex in Wolheongri, Okjong-myeon, Hadong. Ti-ore bodies are confined to the intercumulated type anorthosites, where REE-bearing allanite occurred as veins. The chemistry of allanites shows relatively low in CaO (11.02~12.81 wt%), but high in ${\Sigma}R_2O_3$ (R = Ce, La, Nd) (17.21~21.58 wt%), respectively. Abnormally high radioactive detection ascribes to the presence of small particles of thorium mineral known as thorite ($ThSiO_4$). Thorite shows 65~72.78 wt% ($ThO_2$) and 5.49~12.78 wt% ($UO_2$) in composition. The radioactive prospecting could be a strong tool to find REE-bearing allanite which is closely associated with Ti-ore deposits.

  • The MTF(modulation transfer function) is one of parameters to evaluate the performance of imaging systems. Also, it can be used to restore information that is lost by a harsh space environment (radioactivity, extreme cold/heat condition and electromagnetic field etc.), atmospheric effects and falloff of system performance etc. This paper evaluated the MTF values of images taken by DubaiSat-1 satellite which was launched in 2009 by EIAST(Emirates Institute for Advanced Science and Technology) and Satrec Initiative. Generally, the MTF was assessed using various methods such as a point source method and a knife-edge method. This paper used the slanted-edge method. The slantededge method is the ISO 12233 standard for the MTF measurement of electronic still-picture cameras. The method is adapted to estimate the MTF values of line-scanning telescopes. After assessing the MTF, we performed the MTF compensation by generating a MTF convolution kernel based on the PSF(point spread function) with image denoising to enhance the image quality.

  • Single beam echo sounding was used to delineate bathymetry sea bottom in the area of hydrography and marine navigation. This research was aimed at measuring the thickness of floating silty clay sediment with dual frequencies echo sounding system. There occur discrepancies in penetrating depth through sea beds between high frequency(200 KHz) and low(33 KHz) frequency. RI density logging was employed to characterize the floating silty clay sediment of Guangyang bay, which was chosen to investigate the proposed site for reclamation field. The volume of floating silty clay sediment was used to design by estimating size of reclamation site. The estimation strategies developed in this study will be readily applicable to measure the Pattern of sedimentation via regular hydrographic survey in the future.

  • Space Environment including Solar activities such as Solar explosion, Corona Mass Ejection(CMS) is always not friendly for human. Especially it may be fatal to artificial satellites. The lifetime of geostationary communication satellites are reducing due to plasma such as electrons, protons etc. emitting from Sun. This is because the active components constituting communication satellite are easily affected by plasma. Even though the radiation shielding on the components can be a way to prevent, the cost will be high. So the appropriate shielding is necessary and the study on space environment is also. In this study spacecraft anomalies will be investigated from low earth orbit to deep space spacecraft and the correlation between spacecraft anomalies and space environment events including space explosion, geomagnetic storms etc is analyzed.

  • Series of basic experiments for current density calibration by user process and for density calibration using geophysical model borehole were made. We tried to find the sonde response characteristics for current calibration using water and aluminium field jig, and using the equation of half life of 137Cs source. The result of calibration test made in a geophysical model borehole built first in Korea shows a perfect linear calibration equation. By adopting this calibration equation we could estimate the limitation as well as possibility of current density calibration by user process.

  • Radiation exposures of an astronaut during the space travels to the International Space Station(ISS) of the Soyuz and the Moon of the Apollo, were calculated considering the altitude, boarding time, period of stay, kinds of spaceships and space suits. The calculated radiation exposures decrease dramatically according to the thickness of the shielding by the wall of the spaceships and by the space suits. For the space travel to the ISS of Soyuz at Low Earth orbit, the thickness of the spaceship required to optimally reduce the radiation exposure is 3 cm. For the Extravehicle Mobility Unit(EMU) the exposures are minimized at 4 cm of the aluminized Mylar and 5 cm of the Demron, respectively. The aluminized Mylar showed better radiation shielding than the Demron which contains the high Z materials. The radiation exposures of an astronaut were $4.2\times10^{-6}$ Sv for the ISS travel and $4.3\times10^{-5}$ Sv for the Moon explore. The high concentration of the high energy proton flux at the surface of the Moon results in high radiation exposure. The calculation scheme and results of this study can be used in the design of the shielding performance of a spaceship and space suits.
