The Removal of Heavy Metals from CCA Treated Wood by Aspergillus Niger-alginate Bead (CCA처리목재의 고정화 Aspergillus niger에 의한 중금속 제거)

  • One way of using wood safely and soundly for a long time is use of preservative-treated wood. Although, preservative-treated wood present to us durability and safety during using periods, it is also important to safe disposal after its service periods because of toxic components. Biological methods could be applicable to its disposal methods and better safe than chemical methods in the aspect of environmental problems. This study applied biological methods to remove the heavy metals from end-used CCA treated wood. The Aspergillus niger was used for this study which make black stain on the wood surface by it's spore. This study investigated the growing of A. niger on the CCA treated wood chips and the removal efficiency of heavy metals from CCA treated wood chips using immobilizing A. niger. A. niger could growing on the CCA treated wood chips and A. niger remove the effective elements of CCA treated wood effectively.

CCA 방부 목재로 지은 통나무집 주변 토양의 중금속 오염도 평가

  • 방부 목재는 일반 목재에 비해 사용 수명이 20-40년 정도 길기 때문에 사용이 점차 증가하고 있다 국내에서 가장 널리 사용되는 방부제는 chromate copper arsenate(CCA)이다 CCA 성분인 구리, 크롬 및 비소는 생태계 및 인체에 대한 위해성 때문에 많은 나라에서 처리 목재의 사용을 금지하거나 제한하고 있는 실정인 반면에, 국내에서의 사용은 늘어만 가고 있는 실정이다. 이 연구에서는 방부 목재를 사용하여 지은 3년 된 통나무집 한 곳과 8년 된 통나무집 두 곳에 인접한 토양시료를 채취, 분석하여 방부 목재 사용으로 인한 토양 오염도를 평가하였다. 건물에 인접한 지점부터 수평 방향으로 25cm 간격으로 100cm까지 5개의 표토 시료를 채취하였다. 또한 배경 농도를 알아보기 위해서 건물에서 조금 떨어진 곳에서 토양시료를 2개 채취하였다. 토양시료는 입도, 전기전도도, pH, 유기물 함량 등의 물리 화학적 성질에 대해 분석하였으며, CCA성분은 microwave oven을 이용하여 추출한 후 분석하였다. 0cm에서 CCA성분은 배경 농도보다. 높게 나타났다. 용출양은 3년 된 통나무집의 경우 크롬(67.2mg/kg)>구리(20.3mg/kg)>비소(4.14mg/kg)의 순으로 측정되었으며, 8년 된 통나무집의 경우 크롬(36.6mg/kg)>구리(21.3mg/kg)>비소(1.93mg/kg)의 순으로 측정되었다. 구리를 제외하고 크롬과 비소의 경우 3년 된 통나무집에서 많이 용출되는 것을 알 수 있었다. 3년 된 통나무집의 구리와 크롬은 100cm농도가 배경농도보다. 높게 나타났으며, 비소의 경우는 100cm농도가 배경농도보다. 낮게 나타났다. 이는 구리와 크롬이 100cm이상으로 이동을 한다는 것을 알려주며, 8년 된 통나무집의 경우는 크롬과 비소가 100cm이상으로 이동한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이 연구를 통해 CCA로 처리된 방부목재에서는 CCA성분이 용출되는 것을 알 수 있었으며, 크롬과 비소의 경우는 초기에 많이 용출되고, 구리의 경우는 꾸준히 용출되는 것을 알 수 있었다. 3년 된 통나무집이 8년 된 통나무집보다. 용출양이 더 컸으며, 이는 CCA성분이 초기에 많이 용출된다는 것을 의미한다.

  • 주거 건축 및 가구산업의 자재로써 합성목재(Wood-Plastic Composites)는 점차 각광받고 있다. 본 연구에서는 합성목재의 연소특성을 살펴보기 위하여 한계산소지수 측정(ASTM D2863) 및 콘칼로리미터 시험(ISO 5660-1)을 실시하였으며 또한 일반목재인 적송(red pine)과 방부 처리를 한 방부목에 대하여도 동일한 시험을 통하여 합성목재와 연소특성을 비교 검토하였다. 한계산소지수 측정결과 합성목재가 적송 및 방부목에 비해 가장 낮게 측정되었다. 콘칼로리미터 시험결과 합성목재의 열방출률값이 가장 빨리 피크치에 도달하였고 점차적으로 감소하였다. 합성목재의 최대 열방출률 값 및 평균 열방출률 값은 적송 및 방부목에 비해 가장 높게 나타났으며 총 방출열량 또한 가장 높게 나타났다.

The Heavy Metals Recovery from Carbonized CCA Treated Wood (CCA방부목재의 탄화가 중금속 회수에 미치는 영향)

  • The using amount of preservative-treated wood equipments has been increased. Specially, chromate copper arsenate (CCA) has been widely used to exterior wood. We are faced to the disposal problem after service period of CCA treated wood due to its toxic heavy metals. For the disposal of end-used treated wood, land-filling and incinerating methods are mainly applied. The essential problem of incinerating is an arsenic release into atmosphere. Low pyrolysis is suggested as the methods of protecting arsenic release during incineration. The heavy metals were recovered after combustion of the treated wood at the low temperature which arsenic can not released. The recovery amounts of effectiveness compounds was determined in various solvents (citric acid, nitric acid, sulfuric acid, acetic acid, phosphoric acid) and different temperature (300, 400, $500^{\circ}C$). The higher temperature was applied, the more copper was recovered. The chromium was difficult to be recovered on the carbonized CCA treated wood at 0.5% acid concentration. The recovery mass of arsenic decreased on the higher combustion treated wood. The recovery of chromium was difficult due to the chemical change of the chromium arsenate during pyrolysis.

Evaluation of Deterioration of Larix kaempferi Wood Heat-treated by Superheated Steam through Field Decay Test for 12 Months (12개월 야외 내후성 시험에 의한 과열증기 열처리된 낙엽송재의 열화 평가)

  • In this study, the decay resistance of larch wood, which was heat treated by superheated steam, was evaluated by the field decay test. During the field decay test of 12 months, non-treated wood has been severely damaged by termite, however, no visible damage has occurred in the preservative-treated wood and superheated steam heat-treated wood. Results of field decay test showed approximately 5% mass loss of the non-treated wood and the preservative-treated wood, and approximately 1% mass loss of the superheated steam heat-treated wood. After the field decay test for 12 months, the residual amount of preservatives remaining in the preservative-treated wood was lower than that before the field decay test. It was considered that the preservative was partially eluted during the field decay test, and the mass loss of the preservative-treated wood was thought to be similar to that of the non-treated wood. Through this study and additional long-term monitoring test, superheated steam heat treatment can be considered to be an environmental-friendly method to enhance the decay resistance of wood against rot fungi and/or insect without chemical treatment such as preservative injection.

A Study on Combustion Characteristics of Wood-Plastic Composites (합성목재의 연소특성에 관한 연구)

  • Wood-Plastic Composites (WPCs) are one of spotlighting materials for the residential construction and the industry for furniture. At this study, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) was measured by ASTM D 2863 and the cone calorimeter test was done by ISO 5660-1 to find the combustion characteristics of WPCs. In addition, the identical test was implemented to compare the combustion characteristics between the red pine and the antiseptic wood. The result of LOI measurement showed that the LOI of WPCs was lower than that of red pine or antiseptic wood. The cone calorimeter test showed that the heat release rate (HRR) of WPCs was the highest and the Peak HRR as well as the average HRR and total heat release of WPCs was higher than those of red pine or antiseptized wood

Evaluation of Preservative Efficiacy for Refractory Wood Species in Field Tests and Its Implication for Korean Wood Preservation Industry (야외시험을 통한 난주입수종의 방부성능 평가 및 국내 목재보존산업에서의 시사점)

  • The objective of this research is to investigate preservative efficacy for refractory species in field tests. The field tests were set up to evaluate the preservative performance of western hemlock and white spruce preservative-treated to the residential products group C and D of Canadian standard (CSA O80 Series-08) that have been developed for residential use in above-ground and ground-contact conditions, respectively. They were incised and pressure-treated with alkaline copper quaternary (ACQ) or copper azole (CA). Treated samples for the ground contact stake test and ground proximity test were installed in Jinju, Korea on November 2010 according to AWPA E7-09 and AWPA E18-06, respectively. Each sample has been annually assigned ratings for decay and termite attack, based on AWPA E7 grading system. After six years and five months of exposure, the untreated samples showed decay and particularly severe damage by termite attack but all the preservative-treated samples showed no decay. The results showed that the 5-mm penetration depths may be applicable for the treatment of refractory species. This paper discusses what to consider for the use of refractory species in Korean wood preservation industry from the penetration and retention points of view.

A Study on the Analysis of Smoke Density Characteristics for Wood-Plastic Composites (합성목재의 연기밀도특성 분석에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, we measured the smoke density characteristics to find the fire risk of Wood-Plastic composites (WPCs) which are one of spotlighting materials for landscape architecture and residential construction material with the cone calorimeter tester (by ISO 5660-2) and the smoke density tester (by ASTM E 662). In addition, the identical test was implemented to compare the smoke density characteristics between the red pine and the antiseptic wood. The result of cone calorimeter test showed that emissions of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and total smoke production rate of WPCs were higher than those of red pine and antiseptic wood. And the result of smoke density test showed that maximum specific optical smoke density(Dm) of WPCs was higher than that of red pine and antiseptic wood as well.

Evaluation of Soil Contamination by Copper Depleted from ACQ-Treated Wood (ACQ 방부처리목재로부터 용탈된 구리에 의한 토양오염 평가)

  • This research was performed to evaluate soil contamination caused by copper depleted from ACQ-treated wood. Three years after the exposure of ACQ-treated wood in the field test sites, soil samples around the treated wood were collected and analyzed for the copper amount and distribution through soil. Soils around the deck posts installed in five different neighborhood parks located in Chonnam and Gyeongnam were investigated for copper contents. The results of the field test showed that the amount of copper leached from the end surface of treated wood buried under soil was more than 1.5 times the copper amount leached from the lateral surfaces, and the mobility of copper was very restricted in soil. The copper contents of soil within 10 cm from the treated deck posts installed in the parks showed to be less than 500 mg/kg, which are the limit values of the 2nd region set up by enforcement regulation of soil environment conservation act. The distribution ranges of copper in soil from the treated wood set up in the field test sites seemed to be much wider than those from deck posts, which may explained by the fact that the retentions of the treated samples used in the field test sites were much higher than those of the deck posts.
