  • In this study, water quality and acute toxicity using Daphnia magna were analyzed to investigate the eco-toxicological substances identified as statistical analysis and propose a management plan for the effluent of Banwol industrial complex, Ansan, Gyeonggi-do. Cu, Zn, F, Mn concentrations in the effluent far exceeded the US standards to protect the aquatic ecosystem and eco-toxicity values were 5 ~ 22 TU. However, concentrations of heavy metals significantly decreased after Ansan public wastewater treatment plant operating a biological treatment and toxicity values were 0 TU. Zn, Cr, F and Cu in the effluent showed very strong and strong positive correlations with eco-toxicity values, respectively. Regression analysis resulted in an equation between toxicity and Zn, TU = $4.884{\times}Zn$ (mg/L) -0.391 showing Zn concentration should be managed less than 0.285 mg/L to keep the eco-toxicity (TU) less than 1.

  • This study focused on relationships between Pb and Cd concentrations and the difference of success reproductive progress in urban (Seoul) and industrial complex (Ansan) areas. Results of the Pb analysis for the feral pigeons from Seoul (egg contents:1.64 $\mu\textrm{g}$ wet $g^{-1}$, adults in bones: 29.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$ wet $g^{-1}$ and the Ansan industrial complex (egg contents: 1.13 $\mu\textrm{g}$ wet $g^{-1}$, adults in bones: 10.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$ wet g-1) showed that the Pb level of eggs and adults is significantly different between the two colonies (p<0.05). Cd concentrations in liver and kidneys of adult pigeons were also significantly different between Seoul(liver: 0.24 ${\mu}g$ wet $g^{-1}$, kidney: 1.05 $\mu\textrm{g}$ wet $g^{-1}$ and the Ansan (liver: 0.14 $\mu\textrm{g}$ wet $g^{-1}$, kidney: 0.43 $\mu\textrm{g}$ wet $g^{-1}$ colonies (P<0.05). Clutch size of Feral Pigeons living in Seoul was similar between the two colonies, 1.9$\pm$0.3 in Seoul and 2.0$\pm$0.0 in Ansan. The length, breadth, and thickness of eggs were not significantly different between the two colonies (p>0.05). Incubation period in Seoul (17.8 days) did not differ from the Ansan (17.4 days). No difference in growth rate (body weight, wing length, and tarsus length) was found between the two test groups (p>0.05). In Seoul, 65.2% were hatching, and 42.1% fledging. The Proportion of hatching and fledging in the Ansan was 60.7% and 45.0%, respectively. The significant differences between the two colonies for reproductive sucess were not found (p>0.05). With regard to the reproductive effects to the heavy metals, the Pb and Cd concentrations feund in the two colonies were not as high as those considered in results of toxic effects in other species.

  • In order to diagnose the water environment and assess the water quality restoration, long term trend of water environment has been surveyed at 3-R stations from 1994 to 1999 in Lake Shihwa. Annual mean values of $COD_{Mn}$, Chlorophyll a, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and Secchi depth are ranged in 5.2-15.1 mg/L, 7.3-14R.1 jlg/L, 1.50-4.84 mgN/L, 0.055-0.281 mgP/L and 0.5 -1.4 m, respectively, during the study periods. Carson's trophic state indeies were varied from mesotrophy in 1994 and 1995, hyper-eutrophy in 1996 and 1997, to meso eutrophy in 199R and 1999. After dike construction, water quality were rapidly deteriorated by allochthonous and autochthonous loading of high nutrients and organic carbon. Eutrophication phenomena were characterized by massive phytoplankton blooms and high concentration of COD. However, after onset of restoration program, lake water quality was rapidly restored to the level of just after sea-dike construction. The diversion of waste water inflowing from the Panwol and the Sihwa industrial districts which was started from March, 1997 has contributed to improve water quality in the surface layer. And the tidal mixing (sea water inflowing) through the continuous gate operation was the most effective measure to the whole lake restoration.ration.

  • In this study, we investigated the emission concentrations of 31 odorous compounds from various emission sources of 37 individual companies located within the Ban Wal industrial complex of Ansan city, Korea. In the course of our study, we attempted to evaluate emission characteristics of different industrial activities and relative significance of different odorous components . Based on our measurements of odorous compounds, we were able to find a line of evidence to draw a conclusion that a number of odorous compounds can be used as indices to specifically point out the influence of certain industrial activities. It was found that hydrogen sulfide and trimethyl amine record the highest contribution from leather industry. Likewise, acetaldehyde showed its maximum contribution from food-beverage sector, while ammonia for paper-mill, pulp production sector. On the other hand, the results of styrene and most YOC including BTEX were not useful, as their concentrations were not significantly high enough to judge from such respect.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of fourteen odor compounds from a total of 10 sampling sites in residential areas around Banwol-Sihwa industrial complex. The measurement data are analyzed and compared with sensation of odor unit. Only a hydrogen sulfide out of four sulfur compounds was quantified above the detection limit (0.06 ppb) in the residential area around Banwol industrial complex with leather companies and a sewage treatment plant. The concentrations of VOCs were higher than those measured from a big city, and styrene showed the relatively high concentration from all sampling sites ($2.1{\sim}37.8\;ppb$). In the case of carbonyl compounds, acetaldehyde was found most frequently with the mean of 3.97 ppb, and its concentration difference was not significant between Banwol and Sihwa industrial complex. Of the nitrogen compounds, ammonia was measured at the relatively high concentration from all the sampling sites ($12{\sim}707\;ppb$), and a trimethylamine was found at the odor threshold level (0.1 ppb). The concentrations of styrene and ammonia showed relatively seasonal variation, the concentration of styrene in summer was five times higher than that in autumn, the concentration of ammonia in autumn was two times higher than that in summer. However other odorous compounds did not show such strong seasonal variation. Odor-concentration relationship between odor unit and $H_{2}S$ concentrations from industrial sources was examined and used as odor sensation evaluation, and thus the neighbourhood odor complaints maybe caused during the four seasons from the results.

  • The carbonyl compounds in the atmosphere belong to one of the regulatory pollutants for the malodor control designated by the Korean Ministry of Environment(KMOE). In the present study, the emission concentration levels of carbonyl compounds were measured along with a number of criteria odor pollutants from a total of 47 individual companies(June 2004 to January 2005). The results of our study showed that a number of carbonyl compounds(such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, and butyraldehyde) maintained significantly high mean concentrations of 298 to 372 ppb. In contrast, other carbonyl compounds were low enough with the mean valves of 0.54 to 19.1 ppb. It was found that except for such industries as metal production or leather processing, their emissions were generally quite significant. If the measured values were evaluated in terms of malodor intensity, butyraldehyde appeared to be the most significant contributor to the malodor release. According to the measurements made in strong source areas, it can be concluded that several carbonyl compounds(acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde, isovaleraldehyde, and valeraldehyde) are useful enough to diagnose malodor release from those source areas. It should also be addressed that a number of carbonyl compounds added newly as the result of malodor control legislation were not sensitive enough to diagnose malodor release from such sources.

  • In order to understand the spatio-temporal distribution of geochemical parametrs in surface sediments of the artificial Lake Shihwa in the vicinity of Kyunggi Hay in Korea, surface sediments were sampled at 14 sites in July 2007 and analyzed by CHN analyzer and ICP/MS. Metal concentrations in the sediments tended to be decreasing from the head to the mouth of the Lake Shihwa because of extreme pollutant discharge from various kinds of anthropogenic sources such as the Banweol and Shihwa Industrial Complex and cities. With the deposition of fine-grained sediments, high metal concentrations were also observed in the central part of lake. Although various programs(improvement of wastewater collection and treatment system, sea-lake water exchange etc) to improve the environmental conditions around the Lake Shihwa after dike construction were carried out, it was not dear to reach a good environmental quality. Therefore, further environmental programs should be conducted continuously for environmental improvement.

  • In order to understand behaviors of heavy metals around the artificial Lake Shihwa in the vicinity of Kyunggi Bay in Korea in relation with huge environmental changes due to construction of huge artificial lake, water samples were collected from Lake Shihwa and its tributaries from 1996 to 1998 and analyzed. Due to extreme pollutant discharge from various kinds of anthropogenic sources such as the Banweol and Shihwa Industrial Complexes and cities, the Shihwa and its tributaries have been polluted in waters with various heavy metals. The enrichment factors of particulate heavy metals in water of streams and storm sewers were very high. All of the heavy metals observed in the waters showed relatively high temporal and spatial variations. In surface waters of the lake during the desalination after the dike establishment, spatial distributions of heavy metal concentrations were mainly controlled by various biogeochemical factors as well as input of industrial and municipal wastewaters, while, physical mixing was minor factor Pb and Co showed a strong affinity to particle phase, however the affinity to dissolved phase was dominated in Ni, Cu and Cd. Water quality of the artificial Lake Shihwa has been deteriorated by direct discharge of untreated wastewater and heavy metals have been accumulated in the lake system. Therefore, luther environmental improvement plan should be programmed subsequently.
