End-gas temperatures were measured using CARS technique in a conventional DOHC spark- ignition engine fueled with PRF80. The measured pressure data were analyzed using band pass filter method. The measured CARS temperatures were compared with adiabatic core temperatures calculated from measured pressures. Significant heating by pre-flame reaction in the end gas zone was observed in the late part of compression stroke under both knocking and non-knocking conditions. CARS temperatures measured at 10 crank angle degree before knock occurrence was higher than adiabatic core temperatures. These results indicate that there exist some exothermic reactions in low pressure and temperature region. CARS temperatures began to be higher than the adiabatic core temperature when the end-gas temperatures reached look. The temperature elevation due to the pre-flame reaction correlated better with CARS temperature than with cylinder pressure.
We investigated a uniform temperature zone, produced by double flame structure of a coflow CH4/air partially premixed flame, to be used as a temperature calibration source for laser diagnostics. A broadband N2 CARS(coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy) system with a modeless laser was used for temperature measurement. When the stoichiometric ratio was 1.5, we found the uniform temperature zone in radial direction of the flame of which the averaged temperature was 2110 K with standard deviation 24 K. In the stoichiometric ratio range between 2.0 and 2.5, we found very stable temperature-varying zones in vertical direction at the center of the flame. The size of the zone was approximately 15 mm and it covered a temperature range from 300 K to 1900 K. We also suggest that this zone can be used as a calibration source for 2-D PLIF(planar laser induced flurescence) temperature measurement.
CARS(Coherent anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy) temperature measurement under engine-like condition was validated by measuring unburned gas temperatures of premixed propane-air flame in a constant volume combustion chamber. The measured temperatures were compared with predictions of 2 zone flame propagation model. End-gas temperatures were measured were measured by CARS technique in a conventional 4 cylinder DOHC spark-ignition engine fueled with PRF 80. Cylinder pressure was measured simultaneously with CARS signal and used as a parameter on fitting CARS spectrum to library of theoretical spectra. There was a good agreement between the measured temperature and adiabatic core temperature calculated from measured cylinder pressure. Significant heating by pre-flame reaction in the gas was observed in the late part of compression stroke.
Laser applied combustion diagnostic techniques-laser induced fluorescence (LIF) and coherent anti-Stokes Ramann spectroscopy (CARS)-are demonstrated. The profiles of hydroxyl radical (OH) and temperature in the counterflow burner are measured and compared with the numerical results. OH radical is excited on the Q$_1$(6) line of the $A^2$$\sum^+$$\leftarrow$$X^2{\prod}$(1, 0) band transition (281.1 nm) and LIF signal is measured at the the bands of (0, 0) and (1, 1) transition (306~326 nm). Absolute OH radical is obtained by using the laser absorption technique. The quenching effects are considered. Temperature is measured using broadband CARS system. Two dimensional OH radical profile is also obtained. The profiles of OH radical and temperature are found to agree well with those of numerical calculation.
Present study has been conducted to see the relative effects of adding N: to fuel-side and air-side on flame structure, soot formation and NOx emissions. Experiments were carried out to ascertain to what degree chemical kinetics and/or molecular transport effects can explain the differences in soot formation and NOx emission by studying laminar diffusion flames. Direct photograph was taken to see the flame structure. CARS techniques was used to get the flame temperature profiles. And spatial distribution of soot could be obtained by PLII method. CHEMKIN code was also used to estimate the global residence time to predict NOx emissions at each condition. Results from these studies indicate that fuel-side dilution is more effective than air-side dilution in view of NOx emissions. However, air-side dilution shows greater effectiveness over fuel-side dilution in soot formation. And turbulent mixing and heat transfer problems were thought to be considered in practical applications.
Co-flow axisymmetric laminar premixed flame of methane was used to study the influence of air temperature and $N_2$ addition on the flame structure, temperature field and emission characteristics. OH 2-D images and temperatures along the centerline were measured experimentally by PLIF and CARS techniques respectively to observe the influences of dilution and thermal effects of $N_2$ in the gas mixture. Also, the concentration of NOx was measured at each condition by gas analyser to see the suppression effect of N2 addition on NOx emissions. It was found that OH concentrations distribute widely as air temperature goes higher, while the effect of $N_2$ addition is not significant. But $N_2$ addition highly contributes to the flame front and NOx emissions which was argued to be due to the reduction of flame temperature. In accordance with experimental study, numerical simulation using CHEMKlN code was carried out to compare the temperature results with those acquired by CARS measurement, and we could find that there is good agreement between those results.
Experimental investigations were carried out in an atmospheric pressure, optically accessible and laboratory-scale dump combustor operating on methane gas. The objective of this study was to obtain the phase-resolved gas temperatures at different phases of the oscillating pressure cycle during unstable combustion. CARS temperature measurements were made at several spatial locations under lean premixed conditions to get the information on temperature field within the combustor. Also the effect of incomplete fuel-air mixing on phase-resolved temperature fluctuation was investigated. Results including phase-resolved averaged temperature, normalized standard deviation and temperature probability distribution functions (PDFs) were provided in this paper. Temperature PDFs gave an insight on the flame behavior. And strong correlation between phase-resolved temperature profile and pressure cycle was observed. Results of the phase-resolved high temperature gave an additional information on the perturbation of equivalence ratio at flame as well as the effect of mixing quality on NOx emission characteristics.
