  • A volume integral equation method (VIEM) is used to calculate the plane elastostatic field in an isotropic elastic half-plane containing multiple isotropic or anisotropic inclusions subject to remote loading. A detailed analysis of stress field at the interface between the matrix and the central inclusion in the first column of square packing is carried out for different values of the distance between the center of the central inclusion in the first column of square packing of inclusions and the traction-free surface boundary in an isotropic elastic half-plane containing multiple isotropic or anisotropic inclusions. The method is shown to be very accurate and effective for investigating the local stresses in an isotropic elastic half-plane containing multiple isotropic or anisotropic inclusions.

  • A mixed volume and boundary integral equation method (Mixed VIEM-BIEM) is used to calculate the plane elastostatic field in an isotropic elastic half-plane containing an isotropic or anisotropic inclusion and a void subject to remote loading parallel to the traction-free boundary. A detailed analysis of stress field at the interface between the isotropic matrix and the isotropic or orthotropic inclusion is carried out for different values of the distance between the center of the inclusion and the traction-free surface boundary in an isotropic elastic half-plane containing three different geometries of an isotropic or orthotropic inclusion and a void. The method is shown to be very accurate and effective for investigating the local stresses in an isotropic elastic half-plane containing multiple isotropic or anisotropic inclusions and multiple voids.

  • Interfacial surface crack perpendicular to the surface, which is imbedded into bonded quarter planes under single anti-plane shear load is analyzed. The problem is formulated using Mellin transform, form which single Wiener-Hopf equation is derived. By solving the equation stress intensity factor is obtained in closed form. This solution can be used as a Green's function to generate the solutions of other problems with the same geometry but of different loading conditions.

  • The effects of the viscosity of an adjacent viscous fluid on the characteristics of the elastic waves have been studied theoretically and experimentally. Expressions for the wave speed and attenuation of the elastic waves of transverse motion, such as the torsional wave propagating in a circular cylinder and the Love wave in a layered half-space solid, have been obtained as functions of the viscosity and mass density of the fluid by exact and asymptotic analyses. The theoretical results have been compared with experimental observations, and it has been demonstrated that a device described herein can be used as a sensor for measuring the viscosity of a fluid with a known mass density.

  • This paper presents a time-domain Gauss-Newton full-waveform inversion method for the material profile reconstruction in heterogeneous semi-infinite solid media. To implement the inverse problem in a finite computational domain, perfectly-matchedlayers( PMLs) are introduced as wave-absorbing boundaries within which the domain's wave velocity profile is to be reconstructed. The inverse problem is formulated in a partial-differential-equations(PDE)-constrained optimization framework, where a least-squares misfit between measured and calculated surface responses is minimized under the constraint of PML-endowed wave equations. A Gauss-Newton-Krylov optimization algorithm is utilized to iteratively update the unknown wave velocity profile with the aid of a specialized regularization scheme. Through a series of one-dimensional examples, the solution of the Gauss-Newton inversion was close enough to the target profile, and showed superior convergence behavior with reduced wall-clock time of implementation compared to a conventional inversion using Fletcher-Reeves optimization algorithm.

  • This paper introduces a mesh continuation scheme for a one-dimensional inverse medium problem to reconstruct the spatial distribution of elastic wave velocities in heterogeneous semi-infinite solid domains. To formulate the inverse problem, perfectly-matched-layers(PMLs) are introduced as wave-absorbing boundaries that surround the finite computational domain truncated from the originally semi-infinite extent. To tackle the inverse problem in the PML-truncated domain, a partial-differential-equations(PDE)-constrained optimization approach is utilized, where a least-squares misfit between calculated and measured surface responses is minimized under the constraint of PML-endowed wave equations. The optimization problem iteratively solves for the unknown wave velocities with their updates calculated by Fletcher-Reeves conjugate gradient algorithms. The optimization is performed using a mesh continuation scheme through which the wave velocity profile is reconstructed in successively denser mesh conditions. Numerical results showed the robust performance of the mesh continuation scheme in reconstructing target wave velocity profile in a layered heterogeneous solid domain.

  • A complete theoretical treatment of the photothermal displacement technique has been performed for thermal diffusivity measurement in semi-infinite solid materials. The influence of the parameters, such as radius and modulation frequency of the heating beam and the thermal diffusivity, was studied. Usually, thermal diffusivity was determined by the deformation angle and phase angle as the relative position between the heating and probe beams. In this study, we proposed the simple analysis method based on the real part of deformation gradient as the relative position between two beams. It is independent in the parameters such as power of heating beam, absorption coefficient, reflectivity, Poisson's ratio, and thermal expansion coefficient.

  • This paper presents a novel numerical method based on the extended moving least squares finite difference method(MLS FDM) for solving 1-D Stefan problem. The MLS FDM is employed for easy numerical modelling of the moving boundary and Taylor polynomial is extended using wedge function for accurate capturing of interfacial singularity. Difference equations for the governing equations are constructed by implicit method which makes the numerical method stable. Numerical experiments prove that the extended MLS FDM show high accuracy and efficiency in solving semi-infinite melting, cylindrical solidification problems with moving interfacial boundary.
