  • This study aims at the phase-field modeling of the phase transformation in graphitization of the cast iron. As the first step, we constructed a phase-field model including the phases with negligible solubility. Under the dilute regular solution approximation, a simplified version of the phase-field model was obtained, which can be used for the phase transformation related with the stoichiometric phases. The results from the numerical calculation of the phase-field model was in good agreement with the exact analytic solution. The compositional shift due to Gibbs-Thomson effect can be reproduced within 0.5% error in the numerical calculation. The interface velocity, whereas, in numerical calculation of phase-field model appeared to be 15% larger than that from the analytic solution. This error is due to the shift of the interface position in phase-field model from the position with ${\phi}=0.5$.

  • An Experimental investigation was carried out to examine the heat transfer characteristics of rapid cooling process by Twin-Roll. The experimental results were compared with numerical solutions. The measured temperature showed the about 3 % difference to the calculated results. But the cooling rate estimated by the microstructure interpretation method has much difference to the calculated results.

  • 본 연구에서는 제조공정을 생략하고, 보다 최종제품의 형상에 가까운 직접압 연법을 실현하기 위한 기초적 연구로서 두개의 회전하는 로울 내부를 냉각하면서 쐐기형 노즐을 통하여 폭이 균일한 용탕을 직접 주입하는 실험방법에 의해서 얻어진 주편의 표면상태와 주조조건과의 관계에 대하여 논하며 또한 기계적성질에 대하여 검토한다.

  • The lost foam casting method was used to fabricate Al-Si alloy thin sheet specimens; the effects of chemical composition and process variables on the mold filling and mechanical properties were investigated. The mold filling capability was observed to be proportional to the pouring temperature, and both the vibration imposed during the casting and the application of a pattern coating had rather negative effects. The mold filling capability also decreased with the addition of Mg or TiB. When the Mg content increased, the tensile strength of the cast alloy was enhanced, but the elongation decreased. However, after T6 heat treatment, both the strength and the elongation were improved. TiB addition for grain refining or pattern coating did not significantly affect the tensile properties.

  • This study describes the feasibility of producing high-strength Al alloy sheet with a high solute content using a combined technique of twin-roll strip casting and asymmetric rolling. The Al sheet produced in this study exhibited excellent formability ($\overline{r}$ =1.0, $\Delta$r=0.16) and mechanical properties ($\sigma_{TS}$~305 MPa, $\epsilon$~33%), that, cannot be feasibly obtained via the conventional technique based on ingot casting and rolling. The structural origin of the observed properties, especially enhanced formability, was clarified by examining the evolution of textures associated with strip casting and subsequent thermo-mechanical treatments. Our evaluation of the mechanical properties and formability leads us to conclude that the combination of strip casting and asymmetric rolling is a feasible process for enhancing the formability of Al alloy sheets to the level beyond what the conventional techniques can reach.

  • In this study, semi-solid thin plate of A 356 aluminum alloy was fabricated by using slope plate apparatus and vacuum pressurization. Slope plate was used to produce semi-solid material with spheroidal microstructures. After molten metal was poured into the slope plate connected to the pouring hole of die, semi-solid material flowed into the die cavity by vacuum degree. The primary crystals of the cast metal became spheroidal. In order to increase the working pressure, gas pressurization of U shape was designed for fabrication of thin plate. For 3 bar of gas pressure and 60 mmHg of vacuum degree, thin plate was fabricated without defects on surface.

  • Strip casting process, a new casting technology which makes thin strip of $0.5{\sim}5\;mm$ thickness directly from molten metal, has been dramatically developed for past 10 years and faced commercialization in the case of STS304 strip. In this study, ductile cast iron strip which is 1.1 mm thick and 100 mm wide is manufactured by the twin roll strip caster. Graphite and matrix structure of the strip can be controlled through heat treatments and the mechanical properties are examined. The microstructure of the as-cast strip consists of cementite and pearlite. Especially the equiaxed crystal zone of pearlite exists in the center region of the thickness due to the characteristics of the strip casting process. Matrix structure can be transformed into fully ferrite or ferrite/pearlite mixed structures by the different graphitization heat treatments. The heat-treated strip with ferrite/pearlite matrix structure showed higher hardness and tensile strength than that with full ferrite matrix structure.

  • In order to complement the drawbacks of quartz crucible such as fragile-like break and melt-leakage through open slit nozzle, a new PFC system has been developed using a common graphite crucible and plugging system. The u melt is fed on to the rotating a roll through slit nozzle by self-gravity. The new equipment was designed and manufactured successfully. An effort for optimizing all related parameter has been made. Then using the optimized parameters about 10 meters u foil having very thin thickness, which meets the target thickness of 130 ${\mu}m$ and enough width more than 60 mm could be made. The thickness homogeneity set improved, due to the lower eddy flowing of the melt flow the self-gravity feeding system.

  • In this paper the modeling and control of a twin roll strip caster is investigated. Mathematical models for the strip casting process are obtained by analyzing five critical areas such that the molten steel level in the pool, solidification process, roll separating force and torque, roll dynamics including hydraulic actuators, and roll drive system. A two-level control strategy is proposed. At lower level, three local subsystems are independently feedback-controlled by suitable local controllers which perform well to the behaviors of each subsystem. They are a variable structure control of the molten steel level in the pool, an adaptive predictive control of the roll gap which is directly related to the strip thickness, and an $H^{\infty}$ control of the roll drive system. At higher level, all reference signals to the lower level subsystems are generated by an optimal controller in the perspective of regulating the strip thickness and roll separating force.
