  • The Currently, most cargos of container transshipment between Busan Port and New Port are transported over land, and the rest is transported by barge. This study estimated firstly the traffic between those ports through simulations in order to analyze the feasibility of container transshipment by barge. It forecasted annual profitability using determinants to affect on the barge business by the traffic, and then, discussed the feasibility. This study supposed the flexible scenarios with 50%, 60%, 80%, or 100% transshipment and the 25 monthly barge service numbers between two ports, and measured the influences of different factors according to the above various scenarios. And then the sales were evaluated by the different traffics and freights scenarios provided the business would be actually operated. Finally, Net incomes were simulated to analyze the feasibility of different scenarios by various traffics and freights. The net income should be positive to get the feasibility. To achieve this, the minimum traffic should be secured and the lowest freight per TEU should be determined. While all countries of the world is controlling CO2 emissions and emphasizes the green logistics, this study contributed to solve at the same time the problems about the pollution and the efficiency of transportation by reviewing positively the feasibility of barge transportation as an alternative to transportation overland.

  • To install a radar reflector on small ships, such as a small fishing vessel, a fishery buoy, and a barge ship for fishery, it is very important to develop the optimal system which may determine a proper installation location. For this, the response characteristics how waves have an effect on the small ships should be accurately analyzed. In this paper, we analyze the dynamic behaviors of small ships, which may be caused by irregular waves. To do this, we investigate how a barge ship responses to wavelength, water depth, and directions of incoming waves. The analyzed results shall be utilized to evaluate an effect on a radar cross section when we install an radar reflector on a barge ship for fishery and a small ship.

  • Nobody has yet been able to determine the optimal solution conclusively whether NP-complete problems are in fact solvable in polynomial time. Gu$\acute{e}$ret et al. tries to obtain the optimal solution using linear programming with $O(m^4)$ time complexity for barge loading problem a kind of bin packing problem that is classified as nondeterministic polynomial time (NP)-complete problem. On the other hand, this paper suggests the loading rule of profit priority rank algorithm with O(m log m) time complexity. This paper decides the profit priority rank firstly. Then, we obtain the initial loading result using the rule of loading the good has profit priority order. Finally, we balance the loading and capability of barge swap the goods of unloading in previously loading in case of under loading. As a result of experiments, this algorithm reduces the $O(m^4)$ of linear programming to O(m log m) time complexity for NP-complete barge loading problem.

  • Most of hull resistance prediction methods which are used to calculate the towing force of disabled ships are very simple and old-fashioned. In particular, in cases of barge ships, a method similar to the US Navy Towing Manual is being used. This paper reviewed the US Navy Towing Manual and the notification method of Korea Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and proved that these prediction methods are irrational and inaccurate. Furthermore, a new Modified-Yamagata-Barge method is introduced as a more rational and accurate resistance prediction method which can be applied in case of barge ships.

  • When a barge is towed by a tug boat using a tow line, the barge is frequently subject to a large sway motion induced from its inherent yaw motions. This large sway motion combined with external forces due to winds and waves may makes the towing to be difficult or even dangerous. It has been reported that in worse situations, barges or tugs are capsized. In addition, the large sway motion of the towed barge gives a menace to the safety of ships navigating nearby. This paper is the results of the experimental investigation into the course stability of an 8,000 DWT barge using a Towing Tank and a Circulating Water Channel. Various skegs are designed and course stability tests for the barge with skegs are conducted in calm water and in irregular waves. It is observed that an effective skeg attached to the barge enables the sway motion to be zero while the sway amplitude of the bare hull is around 10 times its breadth.

  • In this study, two rectangular barges in close proximity were simulated to analyze the characteristics of motion responses due to hydrodynamic interactions. Using a numerical solution from DNV-GL SESAM, coupled stiffness matrix terms for these same FEM models were added to the multiple body modes in the surge direction. Potential theory was used to calculate the first order radiation and diffraction effects on the simulated barge models. In the results, the sheltering effect of the barges was not shown at 1.3 rad/s with hull separation of 20 m in transverse waves. The separation effect between the barges was more clear with longitudinal waves and a shallow water depth. However, sway forces were influenced by hull separation with transverse waves. The peaks for sway and heave motion and sway force occurred at higher frequencies as hull separation narrowed with longitudinal and transverse waves. Given a depth of 10 m, the sway motion on the lee side of a coupled barge made a significant difference in the range of 0.2-0.8 rad/s with transverse and oblique waves. Also, the peaks for sway force were situated at lower frequencies, even when incident waves changed.

  • This study is on the spatial composition of accommodation area in accommodation barge. The accommodation barge which is used as living facilities for offshore plants' workers can be classified into Accommodation Work Barge, Accommodation Pipe Lay Barge and Multi-purpose Accommodation Barge. We study on the spatial composition of accommodation area in Accommodation Work Barge, most frequently used, through analyzing G.A drawings of the barges. The spatial composition has great influences into the convenience and amenity for workers' daily life in the accommodation area of accommodation barge. The spatial composition of accommodation area shows many characteristics not in horizontal arrangement on any deck but in vertical space arrangement on layers of decks. The particular types of vertical space composition can be classified into 'Centralized Type' and 'Dispersive Type'. These two types will be the basis of space planning for new accommodation barge.

  • Despite various devices have been developed and applied to stabilize the yaw motion, the superiority of twin skeg over other equi-functioned appendages has been recognized so far. In many cases, these skegs were installed with insufficient study and analysis for design, and this leads to the worse performance of their resistance and course keeping than required. Experimental studies on the effect of various kinds of anti-yawing skegs to the course keeping stability and on the additional resistance caused by them were carried out in the circulating water channel(CWC) at Chosun University(CU). Course keeping stability tests for four different size of skegs, resistance tests for three different shapes of skeg(including deformed skegs) were performed systematically. And the effect of angle of skegs on resistance was studied at the final stage.
