  • A 25-day-old, Korean indigenous calf was presented with a 10 days history of respiratory disorders and bloody diarrhea, and died. This calf was extremely unthrifty compared to others and had evidence of chronic diarrhea based on matting of feces in the hair of the tail and perineum. Ecchymotic hemorrhages were observed on multiple organs at necropsy. Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) infection was identified by RT-PCR. The phylogenetic analysis showed that this case belonged to BVDV-2a subgroup and was related to highly pathogenic USA isolate 890 (U18059). This case provided evidence for circulation of BVDV-2 in Republic of Korea. The occurrence of BVDV-2 was also reconfirmed.

  • Plant viruses cause significant yield losses and continuously threaten crop production, representing a serious threat to global food security. Studies on plant-virus interactions have contributed to increase our knowledge on plant immunity mechanism, providing new strategies for crop improvement. The prophylactic managements consist mainly following international legislations, eradication of infected plants, and application of pesticide to decrease the population of vectors. Hence, putting together the pieces of knowledge related to molecular plant immunity to viruses is critical for the control of virus disease in fields. Over the last several decades, the outstanding outcomes of extensive research have been achieved on comprehension of plant immunity to viruses. Although most dominant R genes have been used as natural resistance genes, recessive resistance genes have been deployed in several crops as another efficient strategy to control viruses. In addition, RNA interference also regulates plant immunity and contribute a very efficient antiviral system at the nucleic acid level. This review aims at describing virus disease on crops and summarizes current resistance mechanisms. Furthermore, we will discuss the current biotechnological approaches to control viral diseases and the future questions that are to be addressed to secure crop production against viruses.

  • The causative virus causing rabbit hepatitis has been further characterized by evaluating viral proteins and viral nucleic acids of purified viruses from the liver of the experimentally infected rabbits. Rabbit hepatitis virus has one major structural protein of 54 kilodaltons and some minor proteins. Vrial RNA was resistant to DNAse I. The size of viral nucleic acid of this virus was calculated to be about 7.5 kilobases. These findings indicate that rabbit hepatitis virus belongs to the family Caliciviridae.

  • his study was conducted to Investigate the occurrence of small brown planthopper (SBPH), LaodeIpahx striatellus Fallen, and the ind~cence 01 rice virus diseases by d~fferent seeding dates in dryseeded rice. The occurrerlce of SBPH was the highest an nce seeded in May 11, followed byMay 1, May 21 and May 31. However. SBPH dld not occur on the rice seeded in June 10 duelo the rice was emerged after peak occurrence of first generailon adult of SBPH. The occurrenceof the first generation adult of SBPH was May 11 and it was 3-day earlier than that of infantnce transplanting. The ~nd~cencofe rice vlrus diseases, rice stripe vilus (RSV) and rice black-streakeddwarf virus (RBSDV), was the most severe at seeding date May 11. and then followed by May1, May 21 and May 31 Thus the incidence of "ce virus diseases was closely related with thedensity of the first generat~on adult of SBPH Rice yield was decreased by later seeding dates, although rice yield from May 1 to May 21 was relatively stable and hqii compared with laterseeding dates. Accordingly, there was slgniilcant relatlonsh~p between rice yield and seeding datesice yield and seeding dates

  • This is the first report on. rice black-streaked dwarf virus in Korea. The occurrence of this virus in Korea was confirmed by symptoms On rice Plants, Vector transmission and microscopic Observation in 1975. The smaller brown planthopper, Laodelphax striatellus FALLEN, transmits this virus which is spherical with a diameter of about 60 nm. Higher infection was observed in earlier transplanted rice with higher levels of fertilizer than in normal and standard cultivation fields.

  • With the development of advanced virus diagnostic technologies, numerous viruses, including novel viruses, have been identified explosively from various biological samples around the world over the last decade. For plant viruses, approximately 376 novel viruses have been reported in the last three years. Information on the occurrence and host ranges of plant viral diseases in a particular country or region is very important for diagnosis, quarantine, and control of the viral diseases. Recently, based on active research on the diagnosis and identification of plant viruses, a significant number of newly occurring viruses and new viral host plants have been reported in South Korea. This review paper provides integrated information on plant viruses and viral host plants newly reported in South Korea between 2020 and 2022 to help diagnose, control, and quarantine plant virus diseases in crop fields.
