A study on the Temperature Control of Insulated Open-End Water Vessel (밑이 트인 단열수조의 온도제어에 관한 연구)

  • There are many fish farms being cultivated in the southwestern cost of South Korea. Because the farms cultivating use the basic method that inflow and circulate sea-water, slight negligence and bad design cause major negative impact on fish deaths. Also, the optimal temperature for each specie of fishes has already been proven to differ on each specie. Maintaining this environment, regardless of seasons, is very difficult and that requires research to develop. In this paper, basic characteristics of heat and mechanism of heat transfer are studied. Based on this, Open-end water vessel is designed and constructed using sandwich-insulation panels and simulated to store the heat in certain isolated space. This study confirmed that it is possible to keep constant temperature by this method, in large areas of water where it is insulated by heat insulator. and equipped with heater in Open-end water vessel where the other part is heated. The AC power controller maintains the constant temperature required and the temperature controller detects and displays the temperature by using the micro-processor.

Multispectral Mural Underdrawing Mosaic Technique (다중스펙트럼 기반 벽화 밑그림 영상 모자익 기법)

  • In this paper, we propose a new accurate and robust image mosaic technique of the mural underdrawing taken from the infra-red camera, which is based on multiple image registration and adaptive blending technique. The image mosaicing methods which have been developed so far have the following deficits. It is hard to generate a high resolution image when there are regions that do not have features or intensity gradients, and there is a trade-off in overlapping region size in view of registration and blending. We consider these issues as follows. First, in order to mosaic images with neither noticeable features nor intensity gradients, we use a projected supplementary pattern and pseudo color image for features in the image pieces which are registered. Second, we search the overlapping region size with minimum blending error between two adjacent images and then apply blending technique to minimum error overlapping region. Finally, we could find our proposed method is more effective and efficient for image mosaicing than conventional mosaic techniques and also is more adequate for the application of infra-red mural underdrawing mosaicing. Experimental results show the accuracy and robustness of the algorithm

Effect of Controlled Atmosphere Storage on Quality of Harvested Asparagus (CA 저장이 아스파라가스의 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • Harvested asparagus, Viking variety, was stored in normal and controlled atmosphere with and without ‘Butts in water’ to extend shelf life of fresh asparagus. Controlled atmosphere storage significantly reduced bacterial soft rot of asparagus. When asparagus was stored in controlled atmosphere in combination with ‘Butts in water’, asparagus spears could be stored over 3 weeks without noticeable soft rot. Texture of stored asparagus, as measured by Instron and fiber analysis, became tougher as the storage time was extended. Increase of fiber content in asparagus was significantly reduced by controlled atmosphere storage and fiber content actually decreased in asparagus stored in controlled atmosphere in combination with ‘Butts in water’. Asparagus stored in controlled atmosphere had markedly less chlorophyll destruction than that in normal atmosphere. Reflectance color values of stored asparagus were closely associated with chlorophyll content in asparagus. Considering all quality factors of stored asparagus, controlled atmosphere in combination with ‘Butts in water’ was the best storage method to maintain overall quality of harvested asparagus over 3 weeks.

Hypospadias and Megacolon in a Persian Cat (페르시안 고양이에서 발생한 요도밑 열림증과 거대결증증)

  • A 9-month-old intact male Persian cat (3.2 kg of body weight) was referred with primary complaint of constipation. Diagnostic studies found severe constipation and megacolon. After immediate medical treatment (e.g. enema), the physical examination was performed and revealed that the unusual urethral opening was found approximately 0.5 cm ventral to the tip of the penis where a 3.5 fr tomcat catheter was easily advanced into the bladder. The case was diagnosed as hypospadias. The cat was treated with castration and medical therapy for constipation. To our best knowledge, this case is the first case report for feline hypospadias complicated with chronic constipation in Korea.

  • The below-the-knee arterial tree is the thinnest of all the leg vessels and is an important path for blood flow to the foot. Hence, lesions including stenosis, especially obstruction, may lead to critical limb ischemia which represents the most severe clinical manifestation of peripheral arterial disease. It is characterized by the presence of ischemic rest pain, ischemic lesions, or gangrene attributable to the objectively proven arterial occlusive disease. Typically, the atherosclerotic disease process involving the below-the-knee arterial tree is diffuse in the majority of patients. The cornerstone of therapy is vascular reconstruction and limb salvage. Revascularization should be attempted whenever technically possible, without delay, in patients presenting critical limb ischemia and when the clinical status is not hopelessly non-ambulatory. Therefore, endovascular treatment can become the gold standard for the full range of patients including below-the-knee, limiting the clinical role of the classically trained surgeons.

Studies on the Effect of the Thickness of Lining on Water Holding Capacity and Lield in Rice Patty with High Permeability (누수유에 있어서 밑다짐 두께의 차이가 보수력 및 수호량에 미치는 영향)

  • A field expeperiment has been conducted in order to explore possibilities of efficient and economical irrigation methods for the rice cultivation through which irrigation water may be saved and rice paddies may keep water for longer period of time, resulting in an increased yield of rice. Some of the major findings from the experimentation are summarized in the following. 1. There is slightly significant difference among experimental plots in the weight of rice straw. 2. The 9cm-lined plot proves to be the best in terms of the thickness. In this connection, however, it seems to by 3cm. 3. The wheat straw-lined plot is found superior in yield. However, this may be resulted in by the application of more fertilizer, and how long the plot could be durable may be problematic. Since every two or three years the straw-lining work has to be done, more labour may be required of the plot. 4. It would be inappropriate to expect any meaningful experimental results for the first year, since surface soil and deep soil are mixed up in the course of work. There is not observed any meaningful difference in the number of ears per stalk and in the number of grains per ear. However, in the lined plots, the number of tillers is slightly increased. 5. Irrigation has been applied by means of ordinary method after lining. When irrigation is applied at the interval of five to six days, irrigation water is saved by 44.9 per cent in the case of 9cm-lined plot, 39.7 per cent in the case of 6 cm-lined plot, and 36.3 percent in the case of 3 cm-lined plot. 6. An increased yields arenoted in the wheat straw-lined plot by 23.8 per cent, in the 9 cm-lined plot by 20.1 per cent, in the 3 cm-lined plot by 12 per cent. and in the case of vinyl-lined plot by 12.5 per cent. 7. The rate of maturity of grains is proved better, and the husking rate also found better(75%), that is, the quality of rice grains is improved.

Exploration of Preservation Hurdles in Korean Traditional Side Dishes (한국전통 밑반찬류에 사용된 보존 Hurdle의 발굴)

  • We investigated food preservation hurdles used for Korean traditional side dishes. As a first step of the research preparation and cooking recipes of the side dishes were surveyed, which are commonly used in Korean households. As next step, compositional and microbial quality attributes were measured onto the samples collected from the market. Antimicrobial ingredient added in the preparation are reasoned to work as important hurdles based on the scientific principles. Heating processes such as blanching, boiling, braising, hard-boiling and frying help to keep the produce decontamination or water activity adjustment. Measured salt contents of most side dishes were in the range of 1-5% with those of salt-preserved vegetables being higher. pH values were 4.7-6.4 with those of salt-preserved vegetables being lower and those of hard boiled fishes being higher. Soluble solids of braised or hard-boiled dishes were usually above $40^{\circ}Brix$, while those of blanched and seasoned vegetables had lower values. Water activity values were 0.93-0.95 for seasoned vegetables and 0.77-0.88 for hard-boiled or semi dried beans and seafoods. Product with processing steps of braising or blanching showed lower bacterial load of 102-104 cfu/g, while seasoned or salt-preserved vegetables and seafoods had aerobic bacterial count above 106 cfu/g. Korean traditional side dishes were found to apply the appropriate combinations of heating preparation process, water activity and pH adjustment and salting, providing the required preservation properties.

The Study on the Effects of the Economical Use of Irrigation Water by Different Irrgation Periods and Its Methods on the Growth, Yield and the Factors of Rice Plants. (절수의 시기 및 방법의 차이가 수도생육 수량과 기타 실용형태질 미치는 영향)

  • Higher yield in rice paddies is greatly dependent on adequately balanced and timely supply of water. A majority of rice paddy in Korea is generally irrigated by rainfall, but in many cases it has to be supplemented by artificial irrigation for optimum rice culture. Although the water requirement of rice plant is far higher than that of other crops, submerged condition of rice paddy is not necessarily required. The moisture requirement of rice plant varies with its growing stages, and it is possible to increase the irrigation efficiency through reduction of water loss due to percolation in rice paddies. An experiment was conducted on the effectiveness of economical use of water by different irrigation period and different method of cultivation. The experimental plots were set up by means of randomized block design with three duplications; (a) Alltime submerged (b) Economically controlled, and (c) Extremely controlled. Three different irrigation periods were (a) Initial stage (b) Inter-stage, and (c) last stage. The topsoil of the three plots were excavated to the depth of 30cm and then compacted with clay of 6 cm thickness. Thereafter, they were piled up with the excavated top soils, leveled and cored with clay of 6cm thickeness arround footpath in order to prevent leakage. The results obtained frome the experiments are as follows; (1) There is no difference among the three experiment plots in terms of physical and chemical contditions, soil properties, and other characteristics. (2) Colulm length and ear length are not affected by different irrigation methdos. (3) There is no difference in the mature rate and grain weight of rice for the three plots. (4) The control plot which was irrigated every three days shows an increased yield over the all the time submerged plot by 17 persent. (5) The clay lined plot whose water holding capacity was held days long, needs only to be irrigated every 7 days. (6) The clay lined plot showes an increased yield over the untreated plot; over all the time submerged plot by 18 percent, extremely controlled plot by 18 percent, and economically controled plot by 33 percent.
