Evaluation of Long-term Performance of Metal Seal Through Accelerated Test (가속화 시험을 통한 금속 밀봉재 장기성능 평가)

  • Metal seals are the main components that establish the containment boundary in bolted casks, which store spent nuclear fuel. These seals are degraded by heat and radiation. In addition, creep occurs when the seals are exposed to intense heat for an extended period. This creep results in the stress relaxation of the seals, which consequently impairs the seal integrity. The stress relaxation can reduce the sealing performance of the metal seal, which can further cause leakage in the storage cask. Moreover, the reduction of bolt tension leads to sealing performance degradation. In this study, the results of high-temperature-accelerated tests were obtained to evaluate the containment integrity of metal seals and the decrease in bolt tension. During the tests, the leakage rate, bolt strain, and ambient temperature of the metal seals were measured and analyzed. The metal seals were found to maintain containment integrity for 50 years of storage. The validity of the acceleration test was also investigated.

  • 밀봉장치는 밀봉요소 또는 시일(seal)이라 불리우며, 서로 접촉한 부분 사이에서 유체의 누설방지 및 이물질의 침입방지에 이용되고 있다. 밀봉면에 거시적인 상대운동이 있는가 없는가에 따라 동적요소와 정적요소로 분리된다. 동적밀봉요소를 운동용 시일 또는 패킹(packing)이라하고 크게 접촉형과 비접촉형으로 분리된다. 정적밀봉요소를 정지용 또는 고정용 시일이라하며 가스켓(gasket)이라고도 한다. 오일 시일의 일반적인 사항에 대해 설명하였다. 사용기기의 고속, 고성능화에 다라 오일 시일의 사용조건이 점점 가혹하게 되고 있으므로 신뢰성과 안정성에 대한 요구도 증가하고 있다. 특히 트러블 원인은 살펴보면 취급법이나 축에 기인하는 초기 고장이 많으므로, 사용조건에 적당한 오일 시일을 선정하고 올바른 사용 방법을 지키므로서 초기 고장을 대폭 감소시킬 수 있다. 보다 전문적인 내용들은 관련 문헌을 참조바란다.

Interfacial Reaction between seal and metal interconnect and effets of protecting layer in planar type SOFC stack (평판형 SOFC 스택의 밀봉재와 금속 분리판의 계면반응 및 보호층 효과)

  • 평판형 고체산화물 연료전지 스택의 고온 밀봉 구조에 대하여 설명하고 스택 운전 후 사후 분석을 통하여 밀봉재와 금속 분리판의 계면반응에 대하여 고찰하였다. 대표적인 고온 밀봉재인 Barium-Silicate 계 결정화 유리와 Fe-Cr 계 금속 분리판은 스택의 작동온도인 $700{\sim}850^{\circ}C$ 에서 고온 반응을 통하여 계면에 반응생성물을 형성하는 것이 확인되었다. 이러한 계면반응은 장기 운전시 SOFC 스택 성능 저하의 원인이 되고, 열 싸이클(작동온도${\leftrightarrow}$상온)을 가하면 계면반응 생성물이 delamination 되어 밀봉구조가 파괴되어 수명을 단축시키게 된다. 계면반응은 Fe-Cr 계 금속 분리판의 산화물인 Cr 산화물, Fe 산화물이 밀봉유리 소재와 반응을 일으키는 것이 주요 원인으로 판명되었다. SOFC 스택에서 열 싸이클시 계면반응에 의하여 기밀도가 감소하는 현상이 확인되었으며, 밀봉 구조의 어느 부분에서 계면반응이 진행되는지 관찰하였다. 이러한 계면반응을 막기 위해서는 금속 분리판과 밀봉유리 사이에 계면반응을 억제하는 보호층을 형성하는 방법이 효과적이다. 본 연구에서는 보호층으로서 밀봉유리 및 Fe-Cr 계 금속 분리판과의 계면반응성이 낮고 열팽창 계수가 비슷한 Yttria Stabilized Zirconia 층을 APS(Atmospheric Plasma Spray) 공정을 이용하여 형성하였다. 밀봉유리/YSZ 보호층/금속분리판은 gas-tight 한 밀봉 구조를 형성하였으며, YSZ 보호층은 밀봉유리와 Fe-Cr 계 금속 분리판 소재와 계면반응을 효과적으로 억제하는 것이 확인되었다.

Development and Application of Test Apparatus for Classification of Sealed Source (밀봉선원의 성능시험을 위한 장치 개발 및 적용)

  • Sealed sources have to conducted the tests be done according to the classification requirements for their typical usages in accordance with the relevant domestic notice standard and ISO 2919. After each test, the source shall be examined visually for loss of integrity and pass an appropriate leakage test. Tests to class a sealed source are temperature, external pressure, impact, vibration and puncture test. The environmental test conditions for tests with class numbers are arranged in increasing order of severity. In this study, the apparatus of tests, except the vibration test, were developed and applied to three kinds of sealed source. The conditions of the tests to class a sealed source were stated and the difference between the domestic notice standard and ISO 2919 were considered. And apparatus of the tests were made. Using developed apparatus we conducted the tests for $^{192}Ir$ brachytherapy sealed source and two kinds of sealed source for industrial radiography. $^{192}Ir$ brachytherapy sealed source is classified by temperature class 5, external pressure class 3, impact class 2 and vibration and puncture class 1. Two kinds of sealed source for industrial radiography are classified by temperature class 4, external pressure class 2, impact and puncture class 5 and vibration class 1. After the tests, Liquid nitrogen bubble test and vacuum bubble test were done to evaluate the safety of the sealed sources.

  • 엔진이 고성능화가 되어감에 따라 실린더 헤드 가스켓 재료나 밀봉(sealing) 구조가 계속해서 변 천되어 가고 있고 이는 엔진의 성능향상이 헤드 가스켓에 의해 크게 좌우된다는 것을 알려준다. 그러나 종래에는 헤드와 엔진보아(bore) 간의 밀봉문제가 가스켓만의 문제로 해서 검토하는 경우 가 많았다. 거기에다 검토 되어지는 것도 엔진의 개발 최종단계에서 이기 때문에 엔진을 개선할 수 없어 여러 가지 문제점을 가스켓이 부담하는 경우가 많았다. 그에 의한 무리한 대책은 나중 에 여러 가지 문제를 야기하는 결과를 가져다 준다. 그래서 여기서는 실린더 헤드 가스켓에 관 한 전반적인 내용을 서술하고자 한다.

A Study on the Fabrication of Oil Seal Appartus by use of the Magnetite Magnetic Fluid (마그네타이트 자성유체를 이용한 기름밀봉 장치 개발에 관한 연구)

  • This paper describes the fabrication of the hydrophilic magnetic fluid with high viscosity and its application to oil seal apparatus used with the Nd-permanent magnet. The results are as follows. 1) The ultrafine magnetite particles under the size of $100\;{\AA}$ are first coated by the oleic acid ion and again adsorbed by the hydrophilic D. B. S. ion, and there by hydrophilic magnetic fluid with high viscosity could be made by dispersing them into the ethylene glycol. 2) In development of the oil seal apparatus using magnetic fluid and Nd-permanent magnet, the viscosity and magnetic susceptibility show high when the $Fe_{3}O_{4}$ content is over 50%(g/cc) in the fluid, so that such properties could improve highly the capability of oil seal. 3) The maximum of the resisting pressure of the oil seal using the ethylene glycol base magnetic fluid and the Nd-permanent magnet, is about $50\;g/\textrm{cm}^2$, under the condition of this experiment. Therefore the oil seal may not be suitable for the ship engine and the driving part of the automobile, and thus it needs a lot further complementary reserch. However, it is quite favourable for such an oil seal apparatus as speed reducer under the condition of atmospheric pressure.

Studies on Piston Seal Mechanism of Stirling Engine (스터링 기관의 피스톤 밀봉 기구에 관한 연구)

  • Dynamic seals have been continue to be one of the major technical problems facing stirling engine designers. Most of the modern engines use some version of the dry ring seal for piston and displacer seals. Friction power losses associated with seals are typically several percent of gross output power, with piston ring seals usually being the main contributor. Much effort has been expended to develop the seal mechanism of piston, but the performance of these seal devices is very poor. This study was conducted to examine the efficiency of the various types of the trial-made piston seal mechanism with reference to leakage of working fluid and friction losses. This paper described the successful hardware implementation of a stainless steel bellows element in stirling engine application with test data in power performance. The indicated power by use of the bellows was more than two times as that by use of the piston ring types. As the result of this study, bellows was provide as a reliable and efficient seal mechanism for any stirling engine application.

  • To test the performance of nuclear fuels, coolant needs to be circulated through the test rig installed in the test loop. Because the pressure and temperature of the coolant is 15.5 MPa and $300^{\circ}C$ respectively, coolant sealing is one of the most important processes in fabricating a nuclear fuel test rig. In particular, 15 instrumentation cables installed in a test rig pass through the pressure boundary, and brazing is generally applied as a sealing method. In this study, an induction brazing system has been developed using a high frequency induction heater including a vacuum chamber. For application in the nuclear field, BNi2 should be used as a paste, and optimal process variables for Ni brazing have been found by several case studies. The performance and soundness of the brazed components has been verified by a tensile test, cross section test, and sealing performance test.
