  • The objective of this study is to explore scale problem and to analyze the relations between scale and geomorphologic parameters of the rainfall-runoff model. Generally, measurement and calculation of geomorphologic parameters rely on and are sensitive to the resolution of source information available. Therefore, rainfall-runoff models using geomorphologic parameters should take account of the effects of the map scale used in their development. The derived rainfall-runoff model considering scale problem in this research is the GIUH type model, that is a basin IUH consisting of the channel network response and hillslope response. The cannel network response is computed by means of the diffusion analogy transformed from linearized St. Venant equation and hillslope response is calculated by 2-parameter gamma distribution function. Representing geomorphologic structure of the channel network and initial distribution of its response is width function. This width function is derived by fractal theory and Melton's law to consider scale problems and is weighted by the source location function (SLF) proposed in this research to increase the applicability.

  • This paper proposes a sampling-based sensitivity method for dealing with electromagnetic coupled design problems effectively. The black-box modeling technique is basically applied to obtain an optimum regardless of how strong the electromagnetic, thermal and structural analyses are coupled with each other. To achieve this, Kriging surrogate models are produced in a hyper-cubic local window with the center of a current design point. Then design sensitivity values are extracted from the differentiation of basis functions which consist of the models. The proposed method falls under a hybrid optimization method which takes advantages of the sampling-based and the sensitivity-based methods. Owing to the aforementioned feature, the method can be applied even to electromagnetic problems of which the material properties are strongly coupled with thermal or structural outputs. To examine the accuracy and validity of the proposed method, a strongly nonlinear mathematical example and a coil design problem for local induction heating are tested.

  • For regulating generator speed above the rated wind, versatile methods have been published based on PID. However, these methods with the fixed PID gains could not guarantee that the controller works well in the whole area. In this paper, variable PID gain method has been suggested to overcome this problem. The sensitivity of power to blade pitch angle changes according to wind speed. The variable PID gain function has been derived from this sensitivity.

  • The purpose of this paper is to capture risk profiles of smaller-sized Korean firms $vis-{\grave{a}}-vis$ larger-sized firms during the Asian financial crisis. For this purpose, risk profiles are provided by estimating expected default risks and by tracking how these have changed during this period with respect to their magnitude, volatility, and sensitivity measures. Methodology used in this study employs the Black-Scholes-Merton model for producing estimates of default risks. And the conventional trans-log function is utilized for obtaining sensitivity measures of the estimated default risks. According to empirical evidence obtained here, it is revealed that contractions of corporate loans associated with IMF austerity policy was the main factor responsible for the drastic change in the default risk profile of Korean firms after occurrence of the Asian financial crisis.

  • We investigated the effect of high dose on the sensitivity of optically stimulated luminance dosimeters (OSLDs) on Co-60 gamma rays and used a commercial OLSD (Landauer, Inc., Glenwood, IL). New OSLDs were chosen arbitrarily and were irradiated with 1 Gy repeatedly. We confirmed the change in the radiation sensitivity after repeated irradiation. The OSLD sensitivity increased up to 3% after irradiating for seven times and decreased continuously after the eighth time. It dropped by approximately 0.35 Gy per irradiation. Finally, after irradiating for 30 times, the OSLD sensitivity decreased by approximately 7%. When the OSLDs were irradiated 10 times with 1 Gy after their irradiation using a high dose of 15 Gy and 30 Gy, their sensitivity decreased by 6% and 12%, respectively, compared to that before high-dose irradiation. The change in the OSLD sensitivity with a high dose could be modeled by an exponential equation. We confirmed the radiation sensitivity variation caused by a high dose, and the irradiation history of dosimeters was considered to reuse OSLDs irradiated with a high dose.

  • Low energy high resolution (LEHR) collimator is the most widely used collimator in SPECT imaging. LEHR has an advantage in terms of image resolution but has a difficulty in acquiring high sensitivity due to the narrow hole size and long septa height. Throughput in SPECT can be improved by increasing counts per second with the use of high sensitivity collimators. The purpose of this study is to develop a system model in iterative image reconstruction to recover the resolution degradation caused by high sensitivity collimators with bigger hole size. We used fan-beam model instead of parallel-beam model for calculation of detection probabilities to accurately model the high sensitivity collimator with wider holes. In addition the weight factors were calculated and applied onto the probabilities as a function of incident angle of incoming photons and distance from source to the collimator surface. The proposed system model resulted in the equivalent performance with the same counts (i.e. in shortened acquisition time) and improved image quality in the same acquisition time. The proposed method can be effectively applied for resolution improvement of pixel collimator of next generation solid state detectors.

  • The most common approach for computing engineering flow problems at high Reynolds number is still the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) computations based on turbulence models with wall functions. The recently developed generalized wall functions blending between the wall-limiting viscous and the outer logarithmic relations ensure a smooth transition of flow quantities across two regions. The performances and convergence properties of widely used turbulence models with wall functions that are applicable for turbulence kinetic energy (TKE), turbulent and specific dissipation rates, and eddy viscosity are presented through a series of near wall flow simulations. The present results show that RNG k-𝜖 model should be carefully applied with small tolerance to get the stable solution when the first grid lies in the buffer layer. The standard k-𝜖 and RNG k-𝜖 models are not sensitive to the selection of wall functions for both TKE and eddy viscosity, while the k-ω SST model should be applied together with kL-wall function for TKE and nutUB-wall functions for eddy viscosity to ensure accurate and stable boundary conditions. The applications to a backward-facing step flow at Re=155,000 reveal that the reattachment length is reasonably well predicted on appropriately refined mesh by all turbulence models, except the standard k-𝜖 model which about 13% underestimates the reattachment length regardless of the grid refinement.

  • A level set based topological shape optimization method for nonlinear structure considering hyper-elastic problems is developed. To relieve significant convergence difficulty in topology optimization of nonlinear structure due to inaccurate tangent stiffness which comes from material penalization of whole domain, explicit boundary for exact tangent stiffness is used by taking advantage of level set function for arbitrary boundary shape. For given arbitrary boundary which is represented by level set function, a Delaunay triangulation scheme is used for current structure discretization instead of using implicit fixed grid. The required velocity field in the actual domain to update the level set equation is determined from the descent direction of Lagrangian derived from optimality conditions. The velocity field outside the actual domain is determined through a velocity extension scheme based on the method suggested by Adalsteinsson and Sethian(1999). The topological derivatives are incorporated into the level set based framework to enable to create holes whenever and wherever necessary during the optimization.

  • The aim of this work was to establish the methodology for event positioning by measuring depth of interaction (DOI) information and to evaluate the system sensitivity and spatial resolution of the new detector for I-125 and Tc-99m imaging. For this purpose, a Monte Carlo simulation tool, DETECT2000 and GATE were used to model the energy deposition and light distribution in the detector and to validate this approach. Our proposed detector module consists of a monolithic CsI(Tl) crystal with dimensions of $50.0{\times}50.0{\times}3.0\;mm^3$. The results of simulation demonstrated that the resolution is less than 1.5 mm for both I-125 and Tc-99m. The main advantage of the proposed detector module is that by using 3 mm thick CsI(Tl) with maximum-likelihood position-estimation (MLPE) method, high resolution I-125 imaging and high sensitivity Tc-99m imaging are possible. In this paper, we proved that our new detector to be a reliable design as a detector for a multi-energy SPECT.
