  • In recent years, the fatigue design method by analysis for the mechanical components and the welded structures has much increased, instead of the fatigue design method by rule that has been widely used from the past days. When a fatigue design is conducted by that method, the basic informations, fatigue life curves are mainly obtained from the results of the strain controlled low cycle fatigue test. From these point of views, the low cycle fatigue test is coming to be given a much importance lately. In this paper, the strain controlled low cycle fatigue properties at room temperature in air environment were investigated for the low carbon forged steel, SF45A, and the rolled steel for the welded structure, SM 41B. Throughout the test, strain ratio, R, was maintained constant with the fully reversed condition, -1. As the experimental results, the cyclic stress-strain behaviours of the test materials were different each other, but the low cycle fatigue life-time of them appeared to show little difference in the region of this test conditions.

  • This paper investigates macro- and microscopic fractography performed on fracture specimens from low cycle fatigue (LCF) testings through an Alloy 617 base metal and weldments. The weldment specimens were taken from gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) pad of Alloy 617. The aim of the present study is to investigate the macro- and microscopic aspects of the low cycle fatigue fracture mode and mechanism of Alloy 617 base metal and GTAWed weldment specimens. Fully axial total strain controlled fatigue tests were conducted at room temperature with total strain ranges of 0.6, 0.9, 1.2 and 1.5%. Macroscopic fracture surfaces of Alloy 617 base metal specimens showed a flat type normal to the fatigue loading direction, whereas the GTAWed weldment specimens were of a shear/star type. The fracture surfaces of both the base metal and weldment specimens revealed obvious fatigue striations at the crack propagation regime. In addition, the fatigue crack mechanism of the base metal showed a transgranular normal to fatigue loading direction; however, the GTAWed weldment specimens showed a transgranular at approximately $45^{\circ}$ to the fatigue loading direction.

  • The strain rate effects on fracture toughness and fracture resistance characteristics of A533B-1 nuclear pressure vessel steels were examined in the quasi-dynamic test conditions through the microscopic investigation of the intense strain region around crack tip and the microroughness of fracture surface. J-value calculated from the recrystallization etch technique was the same as calculated from the modified-J when the crack extension is less than 1.5mm in a 1/2T-CT specimen. Local fracture strain was calculated from the fracture surface micro-roughness. The local strains were calculated to be the values of 1.8 and 2.0 and were much higher than the macroscopically measured values. It was nearly independent on strain rate and was regarded as a material constant in ductile dimpled rupture. The fracture toughness increased with increase in strain rate while the tearing modulus showed little variation.

  • This paper describes an experimental study to examine collapse causes of the lifting cable due to brittle failure of an fitting anchor under the lifting works. Also, in this study an collapse mechanism that was obtained from stress analysis was compared with an actual collapse procedure. Fractographical analysis as well as chemical component test, tension test and Charpy V-Notch impact test for the fractured steel members were carried out. And then, its results were compared with that of normal steel members. Circumferential surface flaws were developed at internal facets of the fitting anchor before tensile stress occurred. Hence, a higher stress than nominal stress was occurred at flaws by stress concentration at the crack tip. Also, stress intensity factor of members increased by crack size of the potential flaws. Because the stress intensity factor at the crack tip was greater than critical values(fracture toughness), brittle fracture occurred under the lifting works. It is judged that the main collapse of the lifting cable is due to brittle fracture of the fitting anchor.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the effects of surface flaw on the fracture of all-ceramic materials. A feldspathic porce lain of VMK68, a cashable ceramic of IPS-Empress, and an alumina-glass composite of In-Ceram were used. Specimens were prepared as 12$\times$3$\times$1mm in dimensions, and a Vickers-produced indentation crack was made at the center of the tensile surface. Test specimens were immersed in dlstilled water and In oil, which were broken under a crosshead speed of 0.05 mm/min by 3-point bend test at 37$^{\circ}C$. The characteristic patterns of Vickers indentation and fracture surfaces were examined by an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope. The fracture surfaces of the VMK68 and the IPS-Empress showed a median crack pattern at the fracture origin and indicated a tendency to cleavage hackle. The fracture surface of the alumina-glass composite, In-Ceram, showed a Palmqvist crack pattern at the fracture origin and indicated a tendency of toughening by the frictional Interlocking between the microstructurally rough fracture surfaces.

  • The butt lap joint structures which are usually designed by the concept of slow crack growth damage tolerance, show frequently the behaviors of multiple site fatigue crack growth around the fastener hole edges due to the fretting between the two jointed parts. In this paper, experimental tests of fatigue crack growth have been performed of a bolted butt lap joint structure having an initial corner crack at the fastener hole edge, with different fretting conditions under a flight load spectrum. The obtained test results were reviewed to investigate the effects of fretting fatigue cracks on the damage tolerance crack growth life. Computations of corner crack growth were also carried out using an existed model to compare with test results.
