  • K-Pop is powerful. Once considered to be at the periphery of global music scene, it is now reaching the whole world. Not surprisingly, the media, domestic and foreign, have scrambled to unlock the secrets of K-Pop's phenomenal growth. In doing so, they have not failed to highlight the underside of its success, such as cut-throat competition among idol-group members and the programmed member replacement by their agencies. One of the most notable characteristics in this process is called, in their business jargon, 'the graduation system'. This paper attempts to explicate this management practice unique to K-pop industry. To do so, this paper draws on Rene Girard's work on desires, particularly his notion of mimesis, violence and the scapegoat mechanism. Based on a documentary film, interactive online sites and a monograph that have chronicled how the K-pop girl group <9 Muses> have 'graduated' during their debut process, this paper applies, as its main analytical tool, the scapegoat mechanism and attempts to explore on its basis what 'the system' entails for the K-pop industry in general and the actors working within it in particular.

A Three-Step Mode Selection Algorithm for Fast Encoding in H.264/AVC (H.264/AVC에서 빠른 부호화를 위한 3단계 모드 선택 기법)

  • The H.264/AVC provides gains in compression efficiency of up to 50% over a wide range of bit rates and video resolutions compared to previous standards. However, to achieve such high coding efficiency, the complexity of H.264/AVC encoder is also increased drastically than previous ones, mainly because of mode decision. In this paper, we propose a three-step mode decision algorithm for fast encoding in H.264/AVC. In the first step, we select skip mode or inter mode by considering the temporal correlation and spatial correlation. In the second step, if the result of the first step is INTER mode, we select one group between two groups for final mode. In the third step, we select final mode by exploiting the pixel values of error macroblock or the modes of adjacent macroblocks. Simulations show that the proposed method reduces the encoding time by 42% on average without any significant PSNR losses.

A Method of Selecting Candidate Core for Shared-Based Tree Multicast Routing Protocol (공유기반 트리 멀티캐스트 라우팅 프로토콜을 위한 후보 코어 선택 방법)

  • A shared-based tree established by the Core Based Tree multicast routing protocol (CBT), the Protocol Independent Multicast Sparse-Mode(PIM-SM), or the Core-Manager based Multicast Routing(CMMR) is rooted at a center node called core or Rendezvous Point(RP). The routes from the core (or RP) to the members of the multicast group are shortest paths. The costs of the trees constructed based on the core and the packet delays are dependent on the location of the core. The location of the core may affect the cost and performance of the shared-based tree. In this paper, we propose three methods for selecting the set of candidate cores. The three proposed methods, namely, k-minimum average cost, k-maximum degree, k-maximum weight are compared with a method which select the candidate cores randomly. Three performance measures, namely, tree cost, mean packet delay, and maximum packet delay are considered. Our simulation results show that the three proposed methods produce lower tree cost, significantly lower mean packet delay and maximum packet delay than the method which selects the candidate cores randomly.

  • This paper implemented the u-Healthcare Context Information System (HCIS) supporting ubiquitous healthcare by using location, health and titrating environment information collected from sensors/devices equipped in home for healthcare home service. The HCIS is based on the Distributed Object Group Framework (DOGF), a management model which can customize distributed resources, and manages various context information, applications and devices as a group in healthcare home environment, as one more logical units. Also, this system provides continuous healthcare multimedia service considering a resident's location using Mobile Proxy, and the healthcare context information through Context Provider to a resident in home. For verifying execution of our system, we implemented the seamless multimedia service based on resident's location and the prescription/advice and schedule notification/alarm service as healthcare applications in home. And we showed the executing results of healthcare home service by using service device existed in the residential space on which the resident is located according to the healthcare scenario.

A Study on the Performance of Multicast Transmission Protocol using FEC Method and Local Recovery Method based on Receiver in Mobile Host (이동 호스트에서 FEC기법과 수신자 기반 지역복극 방식의 멀티캐스트 전송 프로토콜 연구)

  • Multicast in mobile host has the problem of hast mobility, multicast decision, triangle routing, tunnel convergence, implosion of retransmission, and bandwidth waste. In particular, the bandwidth waste in radio is a definite factor that decreases transmission rate. To solve the problems, this paper proposes a new multicast transmission protocol called FIM(Forward Error Correction Integrated Multicast), which supports reliable packet recovery mechanism by integrating If Mobility Support for the host mobility, IGMP(Interned Group Management Protocol) for the group management, and DVMRP(Distance Vector Multicast Routing Protocol) for the multicast routing, and it also uses FEC and the local recovery method based on receiver. The performance measurement is performed by dividing the losses into the homogeneous independent loss, the heterogeneous independent loss, and the shared source link loss model.. The result shows that the performances improves in proportion to the size of local areal group when the size of transmission group exceeds designated size. This indicates FIM is effective in the environment where there are much of data and many receivers in the mobile host.

Analysis of Auditory Information Types in Vehicle based on User Experience of Hearing Impaired Drivers (청각장애 운전자의 사용자경험에 기반한 자동차 내 청각정보 유형 분석)

  • The auditory information is used for urgent notification or warning in vehicle because it is not restricted by the direction compared to the visual. However, since the hearing impaired drivers cannot recognize sound signal, various methods of visualizing the auditory information have been attempted to replace it. When visualizing auditory information, only important information should be selected and provided to prevent cognitive overload concentrated on the vision. For this purpose, analysis of the type of auditory information in vehicle should be given in advance. In this study, the types of auditory information in vehicle were analyzed based on the user experience of hearing impaired drivers. Through the observation of the driving behavior of hearing impaired drivers, 33 auditory informations experienced in vehicle were collected. The collected auditory informations were classified into 12 groups through open card sorting by an expert group, and the types of auditory information in vehicle consisting of four levels were presented through a relative comparison of importance between groups. The presented type of auditory information in vehicle can be used as a guideline for selecting important information when the auditory information is converted into visual or tactile. This study is meaningful in that the user experience analysis was conducted by observing actual driving in daily life of hearing impaired drivers.

The Relationship between Youtube Music Video Views and Visual Characteristic: Focused on K-pop Music Video (유튜브 뮤직 비디오의 조회수와 시각적 연출 특성의 관계에 대한 연구 : 케이팝 뮤직 비디오를 중심으로)

  • This paper researches the relationship between Youtube K-pop music video views and visual characteristics. K-pop music video, which is the subject of study has intrigued the world since 'Gangnam Style' became Youtube's most viewed video in 2012. This paper questions the existence of element that are related to music video views which is not externally visible and the availability of the discovering the specific element. Previous studies had difficulty in searching the inherent elements of the music video associated with views because they chose a research method that compares music videos based on one or two pieces of work and had a biased result. Therefore, this paper goals to divide nine music videos according to the number of views in three groups and analyze their visual characteristics to find out the differences between the groups and their each features. This paper will contribute to the development of music video field in Youtube market where the number of views is getting more important recently.

  • The current study investigated the effect of user interface design on metaverse user's objective task performance, perceived usefulness, presence, and enjoyment. Using a 2 × 2 within-subject repeated measure experimental design, we found that users perceived the interface to be significantly more useful when additional visual cues existed and performed better for the given task. Additionally, a repeated-measure mediation analysis revealed that the effect of richer information in the interface on users' enjoyment as a function of need satisfaction was mediated by perceived usefulness. Theoretical and practical implication are derived from the result of the current study.

A Study on the Awareness of Teacher-Parents of Media Education for Children (유아미디어 교육에 대한 교사-학부모의 인식 연구)

  • This study is to examine how media education is recognized and used in the field of early childhood education. For this, it analyzed awareness and problems of media education by kindergarten teachers and parents and set the following research questions to find out a new alternative of media education for children. First, what are differences in concerns and educational experiences on media education for children by teacher-parents? Second, what are differences in teaching-learning methods on media education for children recognized by teachers-parents? Third, the present study examined problems and effective improvement methods of media education for children with 250 teachers in the field of early childhood education and 250 parents and obtained the following conclusions. The teaching-learning method preferred most by teachers and parents was talking activity and as a result of asking the preferred type of group, it was found that teachers-parents answered small group activity was most ideal and what are to be improved in the media education for children included the extension of teachers' opportunities to have research training and non-establishment of the genral theory of media education in our whole society.

Media-Content Repertoire Development and Difference Analysis: Focus on the Entertainment Content (미디어-콘텐츠 레퍼토리 개발 및 유형별 특성 분석: 엔터테인먼트 콘텐츠를 중심으로)

  • This study introduced the concept of 'Media-content repertoire', which indicates the set of favorite media-content combinations of media users and extracted five media user types based on those combinations. We used the range of media(i.e., smartphone, tablet, PC, and TV) and entertainment content(i.e., movie, broadcasting, music, and game) for the analysis. Also, we investigated the differences between those types including demographic variables, individual characteristics, and content buying behavior and we found that statistically significant differences exist among them. Those include 'non-user'(i.e., lower level of media use), 'screen user'(i.e., 50s, TV-centered media use), 'variety seeker'(i.e., 20s. heavy public transport user), 'selective focus'(i.e., 20,30s, movie&broadcasting-centered media use), and 'heavy user'(i.e., high level of media use and consumption). The results provide both academic implications(e.g., extension of media repertoire concept) and practical implications(e.g., direction to the target marketing for each user type).
