The objective of this study is to excavate the current critical issues and suggest the future direction of the Library and Information Sciences(LIS) education. To do so, this research conducted a thorough comparative study of LIS eduction in Korea, U.S.A., and Australia, and the extensive research of the iSchool(Information School) movement currently involving 33 universities all around the world started with the initiative in U.S.A. Specifically, the study investigated the changes and the essence of LIS education and research trends by reviewing and analyzing comparatively the prior domestic and overseas research. Then, it examined the current characteristics of the LIS curricula in Korea, U.S.A., and Australia and performed the inter-country analysis. Finally, the study concludes with suggestions of the future of the LIS education and research directions through an in-depth case research of the iSchool movement spreading out rapidly all over the world.

본 연구는 미국 ALA (American Library Association)가 인정한 문헌정보학 석사과정 (Master of Library Services) 교육과정에서 연구방법론의 현황과 특성을 분석하고, 문헌정보학 프로그램이 개설된 기관 내 다른 대학원 프로그램에서의 연구방법론의 위상을 문헌정보학과와 비교하였다. 연구결과 문헌정보학의 경우, 연구방법론에서 다루어지는 내용들이 매우 다양하고 일관성이 없었으며, 다수의 문헌정보학 프로그램들 내에서 연구방법론이 필수과목이 아니었으며, 상위20위에 드는 학교 중 절반만이 연구방법론을 필수과목으로 요구하였다. 그러나, 문헌정보학 프로그램이 개설된 기관 내의 자연과학 프로그램, 대부분의 사회과학 프로그램, 경영학 석사과정 (MBA), 사회복지학 석사과정들이 연구방법론을 핵심과목으로 요구하였으며, 이들 분야들은 자신의 분야의 특수성을 반영하는 연구방법론 과목을 개설하였다. 또한 이들 분야의 프로그램들을 승인하는 국가적인 기관들이 연구방법론의 필수과목 개설을 명시하였다. 털 연구는 문헌정보학의 학문적 경쟁력을 강화하고, 연구의 질을 향상시키기 위해서는, 문헌정보학 학문의 특수성을 반영할 수 있는 연구방법론의 개발과 연구방법론의 핵심과목 지정이 중요함을 제시한다.

The purpose of this study is to identify several factors necessary to the curriculum development of the archives and records management in Korea by analyzing archival programs of to Schools of Library and Information Science(SLIS) in the U.S.A. Name of the schools, programs and their degrees, credits, required and elective courses, practice, research, facilities, and SAA guidelines of graduate archival programs are compared by analyzing websites and the literature review. There are a few LIS schools that concentrate archival education and most of the archival programs don't cover all of the core archival knowledge suggested in the LIS schools. In conclusion, the core curriculum of archival science should include history and preservation of archives, archives and records management, information technology, management principles, practicum, and research/ thesis. And a lot of cooperated research and conversation between educational institutions and practical fields are required.

Since new issues and topics are emerging in the information and library science fields, diverse needs are identified to enhance the curriculum of library and information science education. This study investigated curriculum of library and information science in US and identified the topics of classes in the curriculum by the three aspects such as competency areas, scientific and technology category, and research fields. Consequently, topics related various information technology including system design and implement are the most popular topics in all analyses. Library and information center management and user service are also major topics of the curriculum.

The purpose of this study is to analyze user needs of university libraries for design of user-centered information retrieval system. To do this, 6 kinds of basic system design factors necessary for user-centered information retrieval system design of the university libraries are used. The user needs which should be considered for system design are examined and analyzed through the questionnaires made by user-centered approach according to the design factors.

This study suggests ameliorated Library and Information Science education, and its curriculum for education of national subject specialists. For that purpose, this study investigates and compares four internal universities, three American universities along with the figures of the present and future subjects to face updated educational plans and prepare to become a new information specialist at ALA(American Library Association), ALISE(Association for Library and Information Science Education), and other agents. The results of this study can be used as the basic data for training 'subject specialist' in the university curriculum.

Research methods is an integral component of a field and plays a crucial role for the development of a field. The purpose of this study is to investigate the information literacy curriculum of school library in the USA. The write, to understand the characteristics and principles of information literacy curriculum, analyzes national standards and some state curricula for information literacy education. Finally, through presenting a couple of lessons which were organized based on the information literacy curriculum, drawing out some strategies for development of information literacy curriculum for school library education in Korea.

The purpose of this study is to analyze and compare the literature on the effects of school libraries in US and use it as a base material for the study on effects of local school libraries. For this study, 37 documents were selected and these documents were analyzed based on the research contents and research results. And School library variables were extracted and synthesized. As a result of the study, The documents analyzed the effect of school library on various objects by various variables and analyzed teacher-librarians as the most important school library variable. And the documents indicated the teacher-librarian's role as information literacy education, reading education and collaboration with teachers for teaching. In Korea, it is necessary to study the effect of school library on students with disabilities, multicultural families and economically weak and to link school library standards with school library effect studies.

This study described the Library and Information Science program at USC as compared with those of Korean national universities; and suggested ways to improve them. Data was collected through interviews, literature review, and analysis of the USC SLIS homepage. A number of features in USC SLIS can be implemented in Korea and gain positive results. In the near future, some of the features that can be introduced in Korean universities to strengthen their programs may include: setting distinct objectives for MA and Ph. D programs, constructing the aims and courses of doctoral programs in the direction of improving the research skills of students, and increasing the number of courses on Children and Juvenile. In the long term, students will also benefit from other changes such as adjusting courses to train school librarians and offering double-major tracks for graduate students.
