  • A person's body resistance in the waterpark, public bath and similar places is much lower than any other places due to effect of water. So low voltage may create a shock hazard for the human body in case of leakage or fault currents from lighting unit etc. We researched the related regulations which are internal standards, NEC, IEC and investigated the actual conditions for the prevention of electric shock due to lighting units in the waterpark, public bath and similar places. As a results internal standard is obscure as compared with NEC, IEC which is the limit of application and distinction of environment condition. And then internal standard's using voltage is higher than NEC, IEC in filed of water. Studies show that internal standard should be revision that raise the installation height of lighting unit, mark IP level surface of lighting unit and limit using voltage to line-to-line voltage

  • Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) during acute respiratory failure due to any cause aids in the recovery of respiratory function. The use of ECMO for acute respiratory failure due to near drowning was reported to be a successful therapeutic option in those patients who do not respond to optimal conventional therapies. We performed veno-venous ECMO for 2 acute respiratory failures due to near-drownings. All cannulations were performed percutaneously via both femoral veins. The 2 patients were successfully weaned off ECMO, but one patient experienced diffuse hypoxic brain damage and a subarachnoid hemorrhage.

  • Recently interactive water fountains are gaining popularity in making public facilities in South Korea. The total number of interactive fountains is rapidly growing at the rate of >50% annually. In this study, we performed quantitative microbial risk assessment to estimate infection risks in children by Legionella spp. while playing in interactive fountains. The exposure dose for a given concentration of Legionella in water was calculated using water-aerosol partition rate of Legionella, exposure duration, inhalation rate, and deposit rate of aerosols in the lungs following inhalation. The dose was converted to infection risk by using the dose-response function developed for L. pneumophila. High weight and/or old children, i.e., 12-year children, running around in fountains were the highest risk group by showing >0.05 infection probability for fountain waters containing ${\geq}10^4$ CFU/L Legionella. The result supported the current guideline by Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which permits use of water with < $10^3$ CFU/L Legionella cells for all purposes. However, the results still warrant further evaluation of the guideline to accommodate risks for children because the dose-response relationship in the model was developed for healthy adults. Further risk assessment studies need to be conducted by employing dose-response model for children who generally carries weaker immune system than adults.
