  • This study analyzes trends in research topics and related terms in the field of library science in North Korea. To this end, subject fields in library and information science (LIS) in South Korea, which corresponds to that of the North, were divided into seven subject categories and 25 detailed subject areas. In addition, 136 research articles published in two North Korean journals were reclassified and analyzed according to South Korea's detailed subject areas. The detailed topic area in the field of LIS is based on the criteria for posting papers of three major academic journals in the field of LIS in South Korea. The two academic journals in North Korea that were the subject of this study were "Kim Il-Seong University Journal (Language Literature)" (2008-2018) and "Reference Materials for Librarians" (2016-2017). This study not only informs South Korean researchers the trends of interest in North Korea's recent library and library science, but can also be the starting point for academic exchanges between researchers in South and North Korean libraries and related fields in the future.

The purpose of this study was to analyse the definition and method of information-giving as a important counseling skills in the counseling textbooks. Research questions were as follows: First, what is the definition of information-giving? Second, what are the ways to give the information in counseling? 17 textbooks of counseling were reviewed. The following are the main findings. First, the definition of information-giving was summarized in two ways: (1) the meaning of information (2) the description of information-giving. The results revealed the reason why the definition of information-giving is vague and it is difficult to distinguish from other skills (ex: giving advice, providing interpretation). Second, the main methods of information-giving can be summarized as follows: (1) motivation and timing of information-giving (2) selection criteria of information-giving (3) procedure of information-giving (4) considerations of information-giving. Out of these methods, the textbooks do not provide much reference on 'selection criteria of information-giving and procedure of information-giving. These findings revealed the necessity of empirical study on the information-giving skills.

  • Authoritative as well as objective information on ranking or dominant research areas of academic departments/schools in a certain discipline is essential for the graduate school applicants. In this study, we performed an informetric analysis to identify dominant research areas in the top 10 U.S. LIS schools. We used two different datasets of research productivity and research interests of the LIS faculty. The correspondence analysis method was employed to graphically display the association between research areas and the LIS schools. We found that the research Productivity data collected from SSCI database generated a very informative map presenting which research areas were dominant in which LIS schools. We also found that for the two most productive suhject areas in LIS over the past 10-year period, the proportion of research articles in information retrieval decreased to a great extent in the recent 5-rear period, whereas that of information seeking behavior showed an almost same degree of increase.

  • At present, Korean universities and colleges are confronted with a strong challenge, within and without, demanding a drastic change or innovation of university education. Discussion on the propulsion of the School Program is now under way as one of the means to reform the university education With such a background in mind, we have considered what should be the desirable course of Library and Information Science in Korea. We have considered the characteristic features and roles of library and information professionals to cope with the now approaching information society and the changing conditons of educational environment We have collected the pros and cons among professors of tile School Program, and investigated the curricula of the three universities which are at present practicing the School Program. Of the 139 professors to whom we have sent the questionnaries, $92(66\%)$ responded, of which the pros were 42 and the cons were 45. The model plan for the School Program is 'departmental school program' $(44\%)$, which purports to adopt 'departmental school program', with the curricula and material resources being utilized in common, or to adopt joint-appointment system with the common utilization of teaching materials and the introduction of a limited dual major system. The argument against introduction the School Program was that because of the peculiar nature of the discipline itself, Library and Information Science can not be merged with any other discipline.

  • This study aims to grasp the key issues and the direction for digital divide research in South Korea. Based on the 488 KCI journal articles published between 2003 and 2020, the authors analyzed the changes in the number of articles per year and the subject areas of journals. Furthermore, the topic modelling and keyword network anlaysis were applied to identify the subjects of research. The main findings can be summarized as follows: first, there was a stable trend for a while after the number of articles had increased by the year of 2007, and then there has been a sharp increase since 2019. Second, digital divide research has been conducted from diverse fields including social science, multidiscipline, and engineering. Third, the six subject areas were identified which are 'digital divide among regions', 'digital divide among people with disabilities', 'technical environment of digital divide', 'divide from information use and its consequence', 'legal and institutional environments of digital divide', and 'digital divide of the elderly'. Finally, it was shown that the areas of 'divide from information use and its consequence' and 'technical environment of digital divide' have attracted attention recently.

  • Mentoring programs have proven highly successful in many industries, and therefore there is an increasing demand for such programs in other fields. Therefore, this study proposed to design and operate an LIS student-librarian mentoring program. To accomplish this, mentees were selected from the LIS students at K University, and mentors were selected by mentees from a pool of LIS workers. The mentoring program was then operated for three months, and all participants were surveyed before and after the program. As a result, first, it was revealed that the librarian mentoring program allowed mentees to enhance their understanding of the practical field, and help them to set career paths and goals. Second, participants insisted that six months is a more appropriate mentoring period, 2-3 hours per meeting is proper as a mentoring time, and considered that the information for mentors and mentees must be provided to each other before mentoring. Third, the intention to rejoin a mentoring program in the future was very high in both groups, but they insisted that the financial support, locational support, and providing sufficient information about mentoring program must be considered.

  • According to the Library Act enacted in 1963, the national bibliography of Korea has been publishing annually since 1965. Unlike countries around the world that have been promoting the continuous development of national bibliography and service innovation, Korean national bibliography is rarely used due to service degradation and structural problems of data. The national bibliography has great significance as a symbol that reflects a country's knowledge culture, as it is a comprehensive records of publications published domestically or related to the country. This study intends to propose a data construction and operation strategy for improving the Korean national bibliography. To this end, this study (1) analyzes trends and key contents of international guidelines for national bibliography, (2) examines the meanings and sustainability of national bibliography at current information environment, and (3) suggests detailed operational strategies to improve the quality and service of Korean national bibliography. Data was collected and utilized through case studies, interviews with stakeholders including national library staffs, and literature reviews.
