A Study on the Professional Image of Librarianship (사서직의 직업 이미지에 관한 연구)

  • This study is an attempt to explore the professional image of librarianship through librarians' subjectivity using Q-methodology based on intraindividual difference in significance. The study identified four types of the professional image of librarianship and discussed their relationship; the ambivalent, the prideful, the advanced, and the critical. Each types are unique, not inter-exclusive characteristics reflected the context of the present. Also, all types have a positive image toward the librarianship.

  • The Study focused on the four areas First, the Study examined the changing identity of the LIS Professionals, and change in LIS curricula. Second, the study addressed the transition from the traditional library to the virtual model. Third, the study asked how the traditional technical service of LIS professionals is changing to user-centered service. Finally, the study viewed the skills and the roles of the LIS professionals.

  • With the start of knowledge based society, there has been extinction of traditional librarian jobs, new kinds of jobs are created, differentiated, and joined. As so there has been a great change in career paths. This study is a basic research of career parhes of library and information sciences alumni to adapt field work and build powerful workforce. Through the research of 5 Universities and 190 career routes, the movement of the library information and science majors' career has been unveiled. The majority of the library and information science majored career was jobs based on culture and arts, education and researches, economy and planning related ones, marketing and sales respectively. Particularly, except the librarian, there were just few careers in artistic cultural field. Further more, because there is a great impact in career tendency based on his education, the library information and science has drawn the report that the future of career and knowledge which is demanded in working field.

  • Librarianship, as a profession, is a part of society, and has both affected and been affected by other social forces, Therefore, the development of librarianship is a social as well as historical process within society. This study explores the historical development of librarianship; South Korea from 1961 to In9 in the context of social development through the use of socio - historical analysis. Specifically, this study focuses on : 1) the development of librarianship in South Korea in a specific time period; 2) the analysis of social forces influencing librarianship, including political, economic, and cultural factors: and 3) understanding the relationship between the development of librarianship and that of other aspects of society. Accordingly, the significance of this study lies in an understanding of the relationship between librarianship and society.

Policy Implications for the Improvement of Librarianship Employment (사서직 취업률 향상을 위한 정책방향에 대한 고찰)

  • The employment prospects of graduates in the Library and Information academic has largely concentrated in the field of librarianship as well as the curriculum of the academic itself. Since there are limitations in increasing the number of libraries and the available posts in the librarianship, the full-time jobs in the field are also limited. Even for the available posts in the field of librarianship, the majority is in contract based posts which does not guarantee a good working environment. The purpose of this research is to make policy implications to improve the employment rates of librarians. The main research methods include literature review of the previous studies and available statistical data, and a questionnaire targeting students and librarians. The targeting policy implications can be categorized into 4 factors, including, as supply side, improvements in the qualification of librarian certificate, in training for librarians, and as demand side, laws on library employment, and improvement of library services for co-operatives. There are 15 detailed strategies to support the 4 factors. For the improvement of strategies in library related laws, the following elements will be considered; supporting system for temporary jobs, the title of librarian post and the library itself, and librarian placement criteria in terms of its realization and mandatory, and obligations in library evaluation. The Council discussions propose the expansion of librarian award system, provision of information systems for librarian jobs, and developments in promotional materials and their deployment for librarians.

A Study on the Librarians' Professional Criteria and Works (사서직의 전문직 요건과 수행업무에 대한 연구)

  • The purposes of this research are to find out why the Korean librarianship has not been fully recognized as a profession and how its recognition can be improved. This research also tries to investigate what the librarians are actually doing at libraries and if their works reflect the criteria of professional works. The research was done through the questionnaires sent to the graduates of the Department of Library Science, Daegu Catholic University working at various types of libraries. Based on the results of the survey, some efforts to improve the professionalism of librarianship are suggested.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study the information technology-related courses offered by the Departments of Library and Information Science. Rapid development of computer and telecommunication technologies has brought many changes in the work environments of libraries as well as librarians functions. Accordingly the Departments of Library and Information Science have been teaching information technology to meet the changing needs of the information environment. This research aims at finding out how the information technology-related courses have been changed, what are the contents of those courses, and what libraries need as for as information technology is concerned.

A Study on the Perception of Librarianship Professionalism in Korean Public Library (공공도서관 사서직 전문성 인식에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the direction of librarianship by analyzing differences in Librarian and User perceptions of Librarianship Professionalism. Literature research was used to derive the components of librarianship Professionalism and to conduct surveys on librarians and users. As a result, librarians recognized expert knowledge as the most important factor, while users recognized service attitude as the most important factor. Users recognized that librarians have low social recognition due to their lack of enjoyment, enthusiasm, and challenging spirit and their ability to develop and provide services by understanding user needs and the flow of knowledge. On the other hand, librarians did not actively engage in communication or exchange with users due to their lack of expert knowledge.

A Study on the Improving Personnel System of Librarianship in Korea (한국 사서직제 개선방안에 관한 연구)

  • This study alms to suggest a new personnel system(classification of public position) for librarianship in Korea. In order to achieve this goal, the five alternative plans are analysed with respect to the grounds of an argument, merits and demerits, and its realization. In conclusion, the 'record culture group' or record information group'(tentative name), that is, a single group brought together librarian, curator, and archivist is the best alternative to establish a professional identity and social status of librarian in Korea.
