  • This study aimed to determine the total amount of carbon stored in the aboveground, belowground tree biomass, dead trees, and organic matter in the forest floor and soil of the 36-year-old Pinus rigida stands in Muju. A total of three plots were selected to measure the carbon stored in live trees, dead trees, forest floor, and soil. Results showed that the carbon stocks of P. rigida stands amounted to 51.0 ton C/ha in aboveground biomass and 29.6 ton C/ha in belowground biomass. The distribution ratios of carbon stocks were as follows: 41.0% in stem wood, 36.8% in roots, 12.8% in branches, 6.0% in stem bark and 3.4% in foliage. The carbon stocks in dead tree amounted to 0.65 ton C/ha while it was 6.40 ton C/ha in organic matter in forest floor. The total amount of carbon stocks found in soil was 51.62 ton C/ha: 20.27 ton C/ha at 0~10 cm depth, 12.83 ton C/ha at 10~20 cm depth, 12.27 ton C/ha at 20~30 cm depth, and 6.24 ton C/ha at 30~50 cm depth. It was also observed that, as the soil depth increased, the soil carbon stocks tended to decrease. Results showed that the total amount of carbon stocks of P. rigida stands in Muju was 139.27 ton C/ha; the highest portion of the cumulative carbon stocks was found to be in soil at 37.1%, followed by the aboveground biomass with 36.6%, belowground biomass with 21.3%, forest floor with 4.6 % and dead trees with 0.5 %. This study is expected to provide forest managers accurate estimates of carbon stored in the habitat of P. rigida stands in Muju.

  • In this paper, we investigated the shadow area of radio programs which are currently being broadcast via FM 102.5 MHz in Jeollabuk-do consisting of 6 cities and 8-guns. The field strength data of FM 102.5 MHz was used with criterion of shadow area. As a result, the field strength of the eastern mountainous area in Jeollabuk-do was very low. We also measured, compared and analyzed the field strength of 102.5 MHz(TBN-Jeonju), 100.7 MHz(KBS) and 99.1 MHz (MBC) in Jeollabuk-do. Based on the field strength data, we tried to find what correlation exists and how much influence is between difference of antenna output power and solution of shadow area. In result, enhancement of antenna output power is not solution in terms of reducing the shadow Area of 102.5 MHz(TBN-Jeonju). In addition, we measured, compared and analyzed the field strength of 102.5 MHz(TBN-Jeonju) and 106.9 MHz(EBS). In fact, the relay stations with 104.1 MHz, 104.9 MHz, 105.3 MHz and 107.5 MHz of EBS FM has a number of FM relay stations in the eastern mountainous area of Jeollabuk-do. As a result, we confirmed that EBS almost did not have shadow area in the eastern mountainous area of Jeollabuk-do based on the field strength data. As in the case of EBS and KBS, we suggest installing TBN-Jeonju FM relay station with the best solution to reducing the shadow area to extend the audible range of TBN-Jeonju.

  • The objective of our study was to predict future cultivation areas for walnut trees (Juglans sinensis), using the cultivation suitability map provided from Korea Forest Service and MaxEnt modelling under future climate conditions. The climate conditions in 2050s and 2070s were computed using the Regional Climate Prediction (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios with the HadGEM2-AO model. As a result, compared to the present area, the cultivation area of the western Korea including Chungcheongnamdo, Jeollabuk-do, Jeollanam-do decreased on a national scale under RCP 4.5, and those of Gyeongsangbukdo and part of Gyeongsangnam-do decreased under RCP 8.5. However, Gangwon-do which is located in higher altitude over 600 meters than other regions showed increases in cultivation areas of 18.3% under RCP 4.5 and of 56.6% under RCP 8.5 by 2070s. The predicted map showed large regional variations in the cultivation areas with climate change. From the analysis of current top ranking areas, the cultivation areas in Gimcheon-si and Yeongdong-gun dramatically decreased by 2070s under RCP 4.5 and 8.5; that of Gongju-si decreased more under RCP 4.5; and those of Muju-gun and Cheonan-si sustained the areas by 2070s under both scenarios. The results from this study can be helpful for providing a guide for minimizing the loss of walnut production and proactively improving productivity and quality of walnuts with regard to unavoidable climate change in South Korea.

  • In this study, slope hazards mitigation methods for a natural terrain are systematically classified to survey the mitigation methods and develop a data base system. Also, field survey sheets which can be recorded the features of mitigation methods installed in the natural slope are developed. The slope hazards mitigation methods in the natural slope are classified as hillside part method and valley part method. The slope part sheet and the valley part sheet are also drawn up for field survey. As the result of the filed survey of mitigation methods about 50 points in Muju and Jangsu area, grass painting and slope covering methods are dominant in case of slopes part. In case of valley part, slit dam, concrete check dam and slope foot barrier are applied simultaneously.

  • In Muju County, one of Korea's major apple producers, the regional agricultural cooperatives united together and invested to establish a cooperative joint business corporation in charge of the sales business. The corporation carried out the sales business transferred from the participating regional agricultural cooperatives. While the two participating cooperatives showed a marked difference in the degree of participation at the beginning of the business, the introduction of the agricultural product processing centers (APCs) and the participation of co-selection and shipment organizations and general farms helped settle this gap. In addition, commercialization through the APCs enhanced the market competitiveness of apples, which led to the stable securing of sales outlets. The corporation integrated the sales business in the county and this resulted in increased sales volume and sales revenue. Playing a leading role in introducing and cultivating new crops on a trial basis, the corporation demonstrated its potential as the main body of the joint sales business.
