  • In this paper, two lossless snubber cells are proposed to generalize high frequency converter with losslless snubber. The selecting of snubber cells, which generalize high frequency converters, are depended on converter topologies. The cells have a saturable inductor, LC resonant tank and two diodes. In the cells, the saturable inductors extremely reduce resonant energy in the LC resonant tank. By minimizing resonant energy, the converter, which applies snubber cells, can operate at high frequency. These cells are applied for Buck, Boost, Buck-Boost, Cuk, ZETA, and SEPIC to generalize converter which have lossless snubber. The boost type converter has been implemented, with 400 kHz switching frequency for 125 W load to verify the converter characteristics.

  • Uncooked starch can be effectively saccharified in an enzyme reaction system containing attrition-milling media. To develope the high efficiency bioattritor, an agitated bead type bioreactor was constructed, and its effectiveness was evaluated. The optimal operation condition of bioattritor was found to be 300 g glass bead/L, 200 rpm, standard type impeller for 220 g/L of uncooked corn starch. The torque under the various operational conditions were also measured. The interrelation-ship between energy consumption for agitation of attrition-milling media and enhanced extent of saccharification of uncooked starch was evaluated, Power consumption was measured to be around 1.53 watt/L under the optimal operation condition. The attrition coupled enzyme reaction system is identified to tie a very excellent energy saying process for saccharification of uncooked starch, and seems to have a bright prospect of industrial application.

  • This study was to examine association between working memory and social cognitive ability, and the influence of story-use on social cognitive ability. To this end, this study measured working memory(via n-back), and randomly assigned 82 participants into three groups(5th level intentionality, 3rd-level intentionality, and exposition conditions), and then compared the accuracy of perspective taking and emotion recognition(RMET: Reading Minds in the Eyes Test) as social cognitive ability. The results suggested that perspective taking accuracy was significantly associated with working memory capacity, whereas emotion recognition accuracy was not. Contrary to the hypothesis, perspective taking in the 5th-level intentionality story group were significantly lower than those in the 3rd-level intentionality story group. Emotions recognition accuracy was not significantly different among the three groups. Overall, this study produced inconsistent results, which has been discussed in terms of theory and methods.

  • The purpose of the present investigation was to evaluate the effects of swimming training on response of lipid peroxide (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme activity of hyperlipidemic rats. Twenty-five male SD rats (6 weeks old) were randomly divided into a control group and 4 swimming groups after hyperlipidemia induction for 4 weeks through a 1% cholesterol diet. Swimming groups were then divided into unloaded swimming group, low-loaded swimming group, moderate-loaded swimming group and high-loaded swimming group by swimming intensity, and made to swim for 6 weeks (6 days/week). The loaded swimming group rats among the swimming groups swam a lead weight equivalent to 0%, 3%, 5% and 7% of body weight attached to the base of the tail. All data were expressed as mean and standard deviation by using an SPSS/$PC^+$ program, and to evaluate the differences between groups, data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and Duncan multiple range test (${\alpha}$=0.05) was performed to test the significant levels of differences between groups. The conclusions obtained from this study were as follows: 1) all swimming groups had significantly lower levels of MDA than the control group (p<0.001). Among the swimming groups, the moderate-loaded group had a significantly lower level than the unloaded group, low-loaded group and high-loaded group (p<0.001). 2) all swimming groups had significantly higher levels of SOD than the control group (p<0.01). Among swimming groups, the unloaded group, moderate-loaded group and high-loaded group had significantly higher levels than the low-loaded group (p<0.01).

  • In modern large-scale semiconductor manufacturing clean rooms, the energy consumed by the outdoor air-conditioning system during heating, humidification, cooling, and dehumidification of the incoming outdoor air represents about 45% of the total air-conditioning load required to maintain a clean-room environment. In particular, the energy required for humidification of the outdoor air in winter is very high. Therefore, evaluation and comparison of the energy consumption in key humidification systems, viz., steam-humidification and water-spray-humidification systems, used in outdoor air-conditioning systems would be useful to reduce the outdoor air-conditioning load in clean rooms. In the present study, an experiment with an outdoor air flow of 1000 $m^3$/h was conducted to compare the air-conditioning process and energy consumption in outdoor air-conditioning systems with electrodeboiler steam humidifiers and air-washer water spray humidification systems. The experimental results showed that the water-spray-humidification-type outdoor air-conditioning system consumed less electrical power than did the steam-humidification-type system and was more energy efficient during winter.

  • The temperature and the composition dependence of the dielectric properties of the solid solution materials in the system $xBa(Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_{3}\[BZN]-(1-x)\Sr(Zn_{1/3}Nb{2/3)O_{3}\[SZN]$ at microwave frequency was studied. The dielectric constant and unloaded Q were $40.5{\pm}0.5,5980{\pm}100$ respectively for BZN at 10 GHz and $36.9{\pm}0.5,2700{\pm}100$ for SZN at 10.2GHz. The temperature coefficient of the resonant frequency was $+27.5ppm/{\circ}C$ for BZN and $-39.1ppm/{\circ}C$ for SZN. The results also showed that 0.3 BZN-0.7 SZN is the most temperature-stable composition among xBZN-(1-x) SZN solid solutions. In this case, the dielectric constant, the unloaded Q and $\tau_{f}$ at 9.8GHz were $41.5{\pm}0.2,2920{\pm}100$ and $-3.5ppm/{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • We explored whether unconscious thought affects the processing of scientific technology information concerning nuclear power. Instead of conscious deliberation of cost-benefit analysis of nuclear energy, we would like to show the effects of unconscious thought on decision making. Participants were presented with all information about nuclear power and then judged the most positive as well as the most negative items. Participants in the unconscious thought condition performed a 2-back digit memory task as distractor before they made any decision regarding the nuclear power. Those in conscious thought condition were asked to carefully evaluate all presented information while participants in the immediate decision condition made a quick decision. Based on the analysis of previous studies on this topic, we attempted to obtain the potential effects of unconscious thought by modifying materials and experimental procedures including the use of noise. Even with these new manipulations, the effect of unconscious thought on decision making was not observed in Experiment 1. In contrast, we observed a significant effect of unconscious thought on decision making when task purpose was clearly presented after participants have finished reading all information regarding nuclear power. The results of the present study indicate that if the task purpose were clearly presented, the effects of unconscious thoughts on decision making could be observed.

  • This study proposed piezoelectric ceramic bender actuators for application to small walking robots. As the space where human access has recently become increasingly restricted (e.g., highly concentrated radioactive storage areas, viral contaminated areas, terrorist zones, etc.), the scope of using robots is becoming more diverse, and many actions that were possible only in the past have been attempted to be replaced by small robots. This robotic concept has the advantage of being simple in structure, making it compact and producing a large size work force. The dynamic modeling, using finite element analysis, maximized the robot's mobility performance by optimizing the shape of the actuator, and the results were verified through fabrication and experimentation. The actuator moved at a maximum speed of 236 mm/s under no load conditions, and it could move at a speed of 156 mm/s under load conditions of 5g. The proposed actuator has the advantage of modular additions depending on the mission and required performance, which ensured that they are competitive against similar drive sources previously created.

  • A rotordynamic analysis is performed for a turbopump of 7 ton class liquid rocket engine considering bearing housing structural flexibility. Stiffness and damping characteristics of ball bearings and pump noncontact seals are reflected in a rotordynamic model. A dynamic model of bearing housing with lumped mass and stiffness is also applied to the rotordynamic analysis. Rotor critical speed and onset speed of instability are predicted from synchronous rotor mass unbalance response and complex eigenvalue analyses. The bearing housing structural flexibility effect on rotordynamic characteristics is investigated for both of bearing loaded and unloaded conditions respectively. From the numerical analysis, it is found that the effect of the housing structural flexibility significantly reduces the rotor critical speed and onset speed of instability.
