  • In the present study, knee varus torque and mediolateral accelerations were measured using the three-dimensional motion analysis system and a linear accelerometry in odor to determine the effect of heel wedges during walking. Wedges were inclined with 10$^{\circ}$ and 15$^{\circ}$ in medial and lateral directions respectively Both knee varus torques and mediolateral accelerations showed two distinct positive peaks in loading response and preswing. Medial wedges resulted in significantly increased both knee varus torque and lateral acceleration in loading response, compared with the barefoot walking(p<0.05). On the other hand, lateral wedges decreased them in loading response(p<0.05). This became more significant for more inclined wedges. However, no significant correlations were found between knee varus torque and lateral acceleration according to the angle of heel wedges in preswing. From this study, it was found that a lateral wedge would be helpful to treat osteoarthritis, decreasing knee varus torque in loading response. In addition, lateral acceleration of the knee joint might be an alternative to determine the effect of wedges and the alignment of the knee joint during walking, instead of measuring knee torque by the three-dimensional motion analysis.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the isokinetic muscular strength of the knee joint between female volleyball and table tennis players. A total of 27 elite volleyball players and 27 table tennis players participated in the study. This study measured both knee extensor and flexor strengths of volleyball and table tennis players using the isokinetic dynamic test. Peak torque was measured by performing maximal voluntary flexion and extension three times at $60^{\circ}/s$. Volleyball players had higher knee extensor and flexor strengths than table tennis players. No significant difference in both knee strengths was noted in table tennis players. However, volleyball players showed significant differences in both knee strengths. Height and weight showed a positive correlation with knee strength. This study found that volleyball players had greater knee strength than that of table tennis players. We also found that volleyball players have asymmetrical knee strength. Comparison with other sport players is warranted to better understand isokinetic muscular strength of the knee joint.

  • In this study, a fully active transfemoral prothesis with a knee joint is designed considering stair walking conditions. Since the torque at the knee joint required for stair walking condition is relative high compared with the one in normal walking condition, the proposed design has high torque generating mechanism. Moreover, the transfemoral prothesis is designed in compact size to reduce its weight, which is related to comfortable fit and fatigue of patients. Flat type BLDC motor is used for simple and compact structure and various components are used to generate required torque with target working angle and speed. The weight reduction of structure is carried out using optimization method after the initial design process is complete. The optimization is conducted under the load conditions of stair walking. The optimized design is validated via finite element analysis and experiments. As a result, the weight is reduced using topology and shape optimization but maintaining the safety of structure. Also the space efficiency is improved due to its compact size.

  • When the muscle is contracted by continuous and same, the force takes fatigue and stiffness. The aim of this study was to know how the fatigue and muscle stiffness change during an isometric contraction. Surface Electro myography(EMG) signal monitoring system and ultrasonic transducer set up the same muscle stem, subjects contract his right femoris muscle by submaximal isometric contraction(50% of MVC) until exhaustion. Before and after the test, muscle stiffness was measured and EMG was measured during the contraction. As time goes by, muscle fatigue was increased. and the stiffness was shown strongly after the contraction. These results show if the muscle becomes more and more fatigued, the circulation of muscle is delayed although the contraction doesn't happen. So muscle stiffness is increased.

  • Y. W. KIM, Y. J. KIM, Mechanical Properties of Unilateral & Bilateral Movements in Isokinetic Knee Extension and Flexion. Korean Journal of Sport Biomechanics, Vol. 18, No. 3, pp. 83-92, 2008. The purpose of this study was to examine the mechanical properties and patterns of bilateral and unilateral movement under varying velocities and movement patterns. The unilateral and bilateral isokinetic knee extension and flexion were taken for three speeds of 13 healthy male subjects. Although there was bilateral facilitation at the speed of $450^{\circ}$/s for the bilateral movement of knee extension, as a whole there was less resultant torque and power of bilateral movement than summed unilateral under knee flexion and extension of 3 velocity condition. There was significant correlations between bilateral deficits within individuals observed for an the same movement($120^{\circ}-240^{\circ}$ flexion, $120-240^{\circ}$ extension, $240^{\circ}-450^{\circ}$ extension), which means that same agonist was recruited. On the contrary, although there was a tendency of a similar pattern of the individuals bilateral deficit according to the varying velocities, there was not a significant correlations between bilateral deficits of flexion and extension within individual, which means that different agonist was recruited. With the analyses of this results the individuals neuromuscular characteristics and the effecting factors for bilateral movement can be speculated upon.

  • In this paper, a torque sensor is designed and fabricated to measure the knee joint torque of a walking assist robot for stroke patients. The torque sensor sensing part was modeled on the link of the part connected to the knee joint motor. The torque capacity of the knee joint was calculated by simulation and the size of the torque sensor sensing part was designed using the finite element method. The torque sensor was fabricated by attaching a strain gauge to the sensing part. Characteristic experiments were conducted to characterize the torque sensor, and the torque sensor was calibrated to utilize it for the control of the walking assist robot. As a result of the characteristics test, the reproducibility error and the nonlinearity error of the torque sensor were 0.03% and 0.04%, respectively. Therefore, it is considered that the developed torque sensor can be used to measure the torque applied to the knee joint when walking on a walking assist robot.

  • The purpose of this study was to determined the converge effects of combined exercise rehabilitation on lower limb muscular function and cytokines in taekwondo player with patellofemoral pain syndrome. In this study, combined exercise rehabilitation(aquatic exercise 3 times a week, resistance exercise 2 times a week) was performed and 20 collegiate taekwondo player with patellofemoral pain syndrome(control group: n=10, combined exercise rehabilitation group: n=10) were participated for 8 weeks. Statistical significance verification was carried out by a two - way ANOVA repeated measures design as a mixture using the SPSS 18.0 program. The statistically significant level was set at 0.05. The results of this study were as following. Peak torque was higher significantly in extensor(p<.001) and flexor(p<.01) at $60^{\circ}/sec$ in the combined exercise rehabilitation group than the control group over combined exercise treatment period. Average power was higher significantly in extensor muscles at $180^{\circ}/sec$ in the combined exercise rehabilitation group than the control group over combined exercise treatment period.(p<.01). The variable of TNF-a was higher significantly in the combined exercise rehabilitation group than the control group as over combined exercise treatment period. Therefore, it can be concluded that a combined exercise rehabilitation program is effective in improving the lower limb muscular function and TNF-a in Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome patient.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of different arthroplasty designs on knee kinematic and lower limb muscular activation for up-stair and down-stair movement. 3-D video analysis of whole body and joint kinematics and EMG analysis of quadriceps and hamstrings were conducted. One-way ANOVAs were used for statistical analyses (p=0.05). The single-radius group exhibited more arthroplasty limb quadriceps EMG and hamstring coactivation EMG than the multi-radius group. Single-radius demonstrated more abduction angular displacement and reached peak abduction earlier than the multi-radius arthroplasty limb. The single- radius the percent body fat showed similar values in the Elderly, Single and Multi-radius group among the periods, however Control group was Lowered among the periods. Single-radius group limb also increased the quadriceps muscle activation level to produce more knee extension moment to compensate for the short quadriceps moment arm. Resting metabolic rate was significantly increased in control group in the period of LI. Energy expenditure was extremely increased in all groups except control group among the periods. We can say this is the exercise effects.
