Suppression of Bacterial Soft Rot on Chinese Cabbage by Calcium Fertilizer Treatment (칼슘비료 처리에 의한 배추 무름병 발생 억제)

  • Bacterial soft rot by Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora is one of the diseases causing the biggest damages in Chinese cabbage cultivation. This study was conducted to evaluate on suppressive effect of calcium fertilizer to bacterial soft rot of Chinese cabbage. Seven calcium fertilizers were selected for evaluation. And screening was conducted to select effective agents for controlling bacterial soft rot. When applied by the nursery test condition using mineral oil inoculation method with Chinese cabbage, calcium hydroxide had more suppressive efficacy than any other calcium fertilizer, While nitrogen fertilizer was induced the disease, calcium hydroxide was suppressed soft rot disease in field test as well as seedling test. Treatment of calcium+nitrogen fertilizer as well as calcium only showed a significant control effect in the field experiment with Chinese cabbage 'Sanchon' in 2003.

Effects of Environmental Conditions on Incidence of Bacterial Soft Rot in Soybean Sprout (환경요인이 콩나물 무름병 발생에 미치는 영향)

  • Incidence of soybean sprout rot by Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora was examined under several artificial conditions. Under higher temperatures over 3$0^{\circ}C$, disease incidence was increased and the rate of soft rot incidence was 22% at 35$^{\circ}C$. Artificial injuries of inner cotyledon and seed coat induced the disease above 70% and inhibited the soybean sprout growth. Relative humidity above 90% increased the soft rot to 33% and inhibited soybean sprout growth. When the leaked water collected from soybean sprout was reused for irrigation, the disease incidence was increased.

  • 가을 김장용 무우, 배추는 우리나라 어디에서나 재배되고 재배면적도 크다. 그런데 해에 따라 풍년이 들기도 하고 흉년이 되기도 하는데 그 원인이 주로 병해의 발생 때문이다. 배추에는 무름병(軟腐病), 바이러스병(萎縮病), 무사마귀병(根瘤病), 버짐병(露菌病), 흰무늬병(白斑病), 밑둥썩음병(根腐病) 등이 피해를 많이 주고 방제에 신경을 써야하는 병이다. 무에는 바이러스병, 무름병, 버짐병, 검은빛썩음병(黑腐病) 등이 많이 발생한다. 흉년을 만들지는 않지만 상품가치를 떨어트리고 경우에 따라 상당히 많은 결주를 내어 소득을 저하시키는 것이 해충인데 무우, 배추 공히 거세미, 배추흰나비(청벌레), 벼룩잎벌레(톡톡이) 등이 피해를 준다.

  • An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was studied for the rapid diagnosis of the flacherie virus (FV) of the silkworm, Bombyx mori. The optimised concentration of rabbit anti-FV IgG and enzyme conjugate for the this technique were 15$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$ and 1:100 dilution, respectively. In ELISA, the detectable concentation of purified FV was 15ng/$m\ell$, and the flacherie viral antigens in the larval extracts were detected as early as 24 hours after the experimental infection. The results indicated that ELISA technique proved to be applicable for the rapid diagnosis of flacherie virus disease.

  • Ten samples were collected from soft rotted ornamental foliage plants, that were cultivated in the vinyl-houses in Taejeon, Yeoju, Seongnam, Kimhae and Cheju during 1998 to 1999. Studies on morphological, cultural, physiological and pathological characteristics indicated that the bacteria from Begonia heimalis, Saintpaulia sp. and Clivia miniata were Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora, E. carotovora subsp. carotovora the first description of bacteria which caused bacterial soft on Begonia heimalis, Saintpaulia sp., and Clivia miniata in Korea.

  • Occurrence of soft rots was observed on chicory that was massively grown in-In-jae, Kangwon-Do, Korea. At first, a creamy lesion was appeared on the chicory root, which was enlarged slowly in diameter and in depth. The affected root area became soft and mushy. This eventually resulted in wilting and death of the aboveground parts of the chicory. The causal organism isolated from the lesions was identified as Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora based on the physiological and chemical characteristics, and on the results of the Biolog Program (Biolog Inc. U.S.A.). Since E. carotovora subsp. carotovora is the first described bacterium that causes soft rot on chicory in Korea, we proposr to name the chicory disease caused by E. carotovora subsp. carotovora as "bacterial soft rot of chicory".

A New Screening Method for the Selection of Calla Lily Zantedeschia aethiopica Cultivars Resistant to Calla Lily Soft Rot (칼라의 무름병 저항성 품종 선발을 위한 검정 방법 개발)

  • This experiment was carried out to establish the screening methods for the selection of Zantedeschia aethiopica cultivars resistant to calla lily soft rot caused by Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum. A center of leaf and petiole tissues of four Z. aethiopica cultivars were wounded and inoculated with three different inoculum concentrations, $1{\times}10^7cfu/mL$, $1{\times}10^8cfu/mL$, and $1{\times}10^9cfu/mL$, of EccNHRI-21 isolate. And they were evaluated at 4, 18, and 26 hours after inoculation. The lesion of maceration was developed well in the leaf tissues inoculated with $1{\times}10^9cfu/mL$ concentration. And evaluation of resistance in 18 hours after inoculation was correlated with field resistance positively. Using this method, ten Z. aethiopica commercial cultivars and four wild types were screened. 'Crowbrough' and 'White Cutie' were selected as highly resistant genotypes and 'Mont Blanc' and 'Silky White' as resistant genotypes. 'Wedding March' and 'Kiwi Blush' were evaluated as moderate resistant and the others including 'Childsiana' were susceptible. And all of four wild types were evaluated as more than moderate resistant. In spite of control through cultural, biological and chemical methods, the use of resistant cultivars is most efficient to overcome calla lily soft rot. This newly developed screening method was helpful for breeding new varieties resistant to calla lily soft rot.

  • The bacterial soft-rot disease is one of the most critical diseases in vegetables such as Chinese cabbage. The researchers isolated two bacteria (Pseudomonas kribbensis and Pantoea vagans) from diseased tissue samples of Chinese cabbages and confirmed them as being the strains that cause soft-rot disease. Lactic-acid bacteria (LAB), were screened and used to control soft-rot disease bacteria. The researchers tested the treatments with hypochlorous acid water (HAW) and LAB supernatant to control soft-rot disease bacteria. The tests confirmed that treatments with the HAW (over 120 ppm) or LAB (Lactobacillus plantarum PL203) culture supernatants (0.5 mL) completely controlled both P. kribbensis and P. vagans.

  • 고추$\cdot$참깨등 경제작물에 발생하는 병해는 수십여종이 있으나 그중 국내에서 흔히 발생하며 피해가 큰 병해는 곰팡이병으로 노균병, 잿빛곰팡이병, 탄저병, 균핵병, 시들음병, 역병 등 6종, 세균병으로는 무름병, 풋마름병, 세균성점무늬병등 3종, 그리고 바이러스에 의한 병을 들수 있다. 이 병해들은 그 종류별로 병징, 병발생 양상, 전염방법 등에 특징이 있기 때문에 기생하고 있는 작물이 다를지라도 병의 구별이 가능하고 동일종류에서는 병의 방제방법도 비슷하다. 최근 문제되고 있는 병해를 중심으로 진단법과 방제법을 알아본다.

  • 호박은 비교적 병해가 적은 작물로 알려지고 있지만 사실은 호박의 재배면적이 일반화되지 않아서 그런 느낌이 들 뿐이지 시설재배단지에서는 어느 작물 못지 않게 병해의 발생이 심하다. 우리나라에서 호박에 발생하는 병해는 모두 12가지가 알려지고 있다. 그러나 호박재배에서 가장 큰 골칫거리 병해는 흰가루병, 노균병, 잿빛곰팡이병, 균핵병, 검은별무늬병, 세균성반점병, 바이러스병등 수종에 불과하다. 이외에 역병, 덩굴마름병, 탄저병, 무름병등이 발생하고 있으나 위에 열거한 병에 비하여 일반적이지 못하며 피해도 크지 않다.
