The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of iron supplementation on utilizations of various minerals, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Fe, Cu, Zn. Intakes, serum levels, and excretions of these minerals were analyzed and compared in rats fed diet with 100, 200, 400% of iron requirement (Fe, 2Fe, 4Fe groups) for 6 weeks. The feed intake, body weight gain and feed efficiency ratio were not significantly different among the groups. Serum Fe of 2Fe group was significantly lower than other two groups, and serum Zn of 4Fe group was highest. Mineral intakes were not significantly different among three groups. With iron supplementation, urinary excretions of Ca, Fe, Cu, Zn were elevated, but fecal excretions of minerals were not significantly different. And the daily retentions of Na and Fe were significantly elevated, but apparent absorbabilities of minerals were not significantly different. In summary, according to iron supplementation, mineral absorbabilities were not different but urinary excretions of some minerals were increased. Therefore, it could be suggested that adequate iron intake and well-balanced diet are more desirable than nutrient supplementation for mineral balance.
Variations of hepatocyte in the larval liver of grouper, Epinephelus akaara wre examined to understand the effect of starvation during the first feeding period, 3 to 5 days after hatching. Total length of the fed larvae increased from the 5th day after hatching, although no significant difference between the fed and starved larvae was found untill the 4th day after hatching. Survival rate of the starved larvae decreased from the 4th day after hatching, and almost all of the larvae died by the 5th day after hatching. Nuclear size of hepatocyte in the starved larvae starterd to decrease from the 4th day after hatching. The sizes by 4th and 5th days after hatching in the starved larvae were 1.4 to 1.9 times smaller than those in the fed ones. Hepatocytes in the starved larvae showed irregular morphology in which the nuclei were irregularly shrunk and highly compacted from the 4th day, while hepatocyte nuclei in the fed ones maintained their uniform features during the whole experimental period. These results implied that the initial larval food should be supplied at least within the 4th day after hatching. Also, it suggested that the size of hepatocyte nucleus might be and indicator of starvation for wild and cultured grouper larvae.

The purpose of this study was to compare the remineralization effect of 38% silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and 5% sodium fluoride (NaF) varnish on artificially induced enamel caries. The present study standardized the physiochemical characteristics of the tooth structure using bovine teeth, realized the wash-off action of agents using a saliva, reproduced an environment similar to mouth through pH-cycling, and comparatively assessed the remineralization effect of 38% SDF and 5% NaF varnish in a non-destructive method using micro-CT. And the remineralized enamel surface structure was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy (EDS). In both SDF and NaF varnish, mineral density (△Hounsfield unit value) and the volume of enamel restored to normal mineral density through remineralization gradually increased with time. And the SDF showed a much higher level of increase in mineral density at all depths and remineralized volume than NaF varnish. According to SEM analysis, the surface roughness decreased in the order of artificial saliva, NaF varnish and SDF. In addition, EDS analysis showed that silver ion was precipitated on the enamel surface in SDF group. In conclusion, SDF had a greater remineralization effect than NaF varnish on demineralized enamel.

The Project supporting organic fertilizer started in 1999 as a national policy. In farmhouse, over application of mixed organic compound fertilizer(OC) caused salt accumulation in plastic film house soil. To replace inorganic fertilizer with OC fertilizer, this study was investigated the effect of OC application on yield and soil chemical properties for lettuce cultivation in plastic film house. The OC fertilizer was applied at 50(OC50+N50), 100(OC100), and 150(OC150) % level of the basal amount of nitrogen fertilizer in soil testing recommendation. And these were compared to NPK(nitrogen, phosphat, and potash fertilizer) and PK treatment. The yield of lettuce in OC100 was similar to that of NPK treatment. In OC 50, 100 and 150 treatments, pH had a tendency to increase than that of NPK treatment. Nitrate nitrogen(NO3-N) and electrical conductivity(EC) were similar to NPK treatment. These showed that nutrients from OC fertilizer were less likely to accumulate in soil than NPK. Also, use efficiency of nitrogen in OC100 treatment were similar to NPK treatment. These results suggest that OC application as the basal dressing at the 100% level could be best to prevent a nutrient accumulation of soil and to increase the yield and commercial quality for lettuce.

The effect of chronic ethanol consumption on the concentration of minerals in tissues and serum was studied in growing broiler chicks. Four different groups of the chicks were fed mixtures of 0(control), 1,2 and 3% ethanol and water respectively for 7 weeks. Body weight gain in 1% ethanol group and liver weight in 3% ethanol group were significantly higher than those of control. Mg, K, Mn, and Zn concentrations in liver were higher in ethanol groups than those in control. In ethanol groups, femoral muscle Mg level was increased while its Na concentration was decreased. The concentrations of Ca, Mg and Na in serum were higher in 3% ethanol group than those in control, 1 or 2% ethanol groups. In femur, Zn and Fe levels in 1% ethanol group and Mn concentration in 2 or 3% ethanol groups were increased. But its weight, length, and ash content were not affected by ethanol intake.

Calorie, mineral content and amino acid composition of four japonica, seven $j{\times}indica$ and one waxy milled rice were analyzed. No significant differences in calorie, mineral content and amino acid composition were found between japonica and $j{\times}indica$ rice varieties. Only the variation of methionine among varieties was noticed. The most limiting amine acid of milled rices was lysine.

The main Kernels(7 and 18 mesh) of naked barley were pearled to remove 5% of the outer layer of the Kernel. The contents of protein, fat, ash and minerals of pearled barley with pearling degrees of $78{\sim}100%$ were analyzed. All components were decreased with the increase of pearling degrees. The decrease of protein was lesser than that of ash or fat. Among minerals P, K, Mg and Na sharply decreased while Fe and Ca slightly decreased upon pearlig.

The teeth bleaching with bleaching agent is widely used at recent times. Until yet the exact mechanism of the bleaching agent isn't known but it is thought that is by the complex reduction-oxidation reaction of the decomposed free radical from bleaching agent through various ways. In other words, it is supposed that the teeth are whitened by agent's changing chemical structures of stain-causing materials. The purpose of this study is to exam the change of the dentinal character by bleaching agent and to evaluate the safety of this agent. For this study, after applying 10% carbamide peroxide to enamel of human premolar for 6 hours a day for 2 weeks we examined changes of surface morphology, microhardness, composition and contents of minirals in human dentin using SEM, microhardness tester, FT-Raman spectrometer and EPMA and got following results. There was no significant difference in surface morphologic change when we examined the effect of 10% carbamide peroxide which penetrated into dentin after applied on enamel surface comparing with result from specimen in distilled water No change was shown on the surface of peritubular and intertubular dentin within the nanometeric range. The microhardness between bleached teeth and teeth stored in distilled water showed no statistically significant difference FT-Raman spectra of dentin exhibited no change of the component in human dentin. Only the least change in peaks of organic and inorganic materials were detected in Raman intencity. The total content of mineral elements in dentin with no treatment, stored only in distilled water and stored in distilled water after bleaching were $98.73{\pm}1.89,\;98.56{\pm}2.11\;and\;97.47{\pm}2.51$ respectively. Also they showed no statistically significant difference. From above results, the effect of 10% carbamide peroxide bleaching on structure of dentin is very low and the results may confirm the safety of this bleaching agent.
