Control Efficacy of Flusulfamide GR on Chinese Cabbage Clubroot Caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae (Flusulfamide입제에 의한 배추무사마귀병의 방제효과)

  • To investigate control efficacy of flusulfamide GR (granule) on Chinese cabbage clubroot caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae, experiment was accomplished in field located in Gangneungshi alpine area contaminated by P. brassicae. Flusulfamide GR provided control value of 84.6% and that was statistically significant difference from standard fungicides containing untreated control. To investigate ratio of reduction of resting spore according to fungicide treatment, soil of Chinese cabbage field before and after fungicide treatment were sampled and investigated density of resting spore. Resting spore density was not uniform in soil before fungicide treatment. Therefore, to investigate control efficacy of fungicide against clubroot, investigation on resting spore density was conducted before experiment and reflected in experimental design. Flusulfamide GR and DP (dust powder) provided 64.2% and 63.7% of reduction of resting spore on field soil after fungicide treatments. This result indicated that control efficacy of the fungicides was correlated with reduction of resting spore of P. brassicae. The increasing rate in fresh weight of above-ground part of Chinese cabbage by flusulfamide DP and GR, fluazinam DP and trifloxystrobin SC (suspension concentrate) was 14.3%, 13.0%, 13.8% and 3.8%, respectively. From above result, flusulmide GR have outstanding control efficacy against clubroot of Chinese cabbage and is effectively decreasing of resting spore density in soil.

Properties of Rice Cakes for Topokki with Curry Powder (카레 분말이 첨가된 떡볶이 떡의 품질 특성)

  • The principal objective of this study was to assess the quality characteristics of Topokki with different amounts of curry powder[0%(CT0), 2%(CT2), 4%(CT4), 6%(CT6) and 8%(CT8)], based on the amount of rice flour. The L values of the uncooked and cooked Topokki decreased significantly with increases in the amount of added curry powder. The a and b values of cooked Topokki increased significantly with increases in the amount of added curry powder. The weight gains(%) of CT0(11.40%), CT2(11.67%) and CT4(10.93%) were significantly higher and the volume increases(%) of CT2(12.53%) and CT4(12.23%) were higher than those of the other samples. Textural properties such as hardness, cohesiveness, springiness and gumminess were also assessed. Our sensory evaluation test demonstrated that the appearance of CT2(4.24), the color of CT2(4.24) and CT4(4.26), the flavor of CT2(4.34) and the overall acceptability of CT2(4.24) and CT4(4.26) were superior to those of the others. CT4, CT6 and CT8 evidenced more profound antimicrobial activities than the others. In conclusion, the addition of $2{\sim}4%$ curry powder to the rice flour proved the most acceptable for the preparation of Topokki with curry powder.

Effect of Dietary Protein on the Changes of Lipoprotein Fractions in Carbon Tetrachloride-Treated Rats (식이성 단백질 함량에 따른 흰쥐에 사염화탄소 투여시 Lipoprotein 분획비의 변동)

  • To evaluate an effect of dietary protein on lipoprotein profile serum of carbon tetrachloride-treated rats, carbon tetrachloride (50% in olive oil) was twice given at 0.1ml/100g body weight at intervals of 24hours to the male rats and then the degree of liver damage in carbon tetrachloride-treated animals fed a low protein diet was compared with that fed a high protein diet. The increasing rate of liver weight/body weight and the serum levels of alanine aminotransferase in carbon tetrachloride-treated rats to the control group were higher in rats fed high protein diet than those fed low protein diet. In the serum levels of lipid (total lipid, total cholesterol and triglyceride) remarkable differences were not found between low protein diet group and high protein diet group. But these serum lipids in carbon tetrachloride-treated rats were decreased and the decreasing rate of serum lipids to control group were higher in carbon tetrachloride-treated rats fed high protein diet than those fed low protein diet. Under the animal model as identified by the present data herein, serum pre $\beta$-lipoprotein and $\alpha$-lipoprotein fractions were decreased in carbon tetrachloride-treated rats, but the serum levels of $\beta$-lipoprotein were rather increased in the both group by the injection of carbon tetrachloride. Especially, the decreasing rate of $\alpha$-lipoprotein fraction was higher in $CCl_4$-treated rats fed a high protein diet than those fed a low protein diet to its control group and the increasing rate of serum $\beta$-lipoprotein fraction was also higher in $CCl_4$-treated rats fed high protein diet than those fed low protein diet.

Analysis on Forces Acting on the Contact Lens Fitted on the Cornea (콘택트 렌즈에 작용하는 힘의 해석)

  • A mathematical model is proposed to analyze the force; acting on the hard contact lens fitted on the cornea. The model incorporates the nonlinear equations and their numerical solution program, based on the formulations of surface tension force arising from the capillary action in the tear-film layer between the lens and cornea. The model simulates how the adhesion between lens and cornea varies according to the base curves and diameters of the lenses. When the spherical lens is fitted on the spherical cornea it is to rotate downward due to the weight of lens itself until it reaches an equilibrium position along the cornea where the counter(upward) moment caused by net force between the upper and lower portion of the periphery of lens. It is found that both the adhesion and displacement of lens along the cornea, where the gravity of lens balances the capillary-induced upward force, increases rapidly as the base curve of lens increases, i.e., as the lens gets flatter, while the increase in the diameter of lenses has resulted in the less increase in the rotation and adhesion. With the base curve and diameters of lenses being remained constant the increase in surface tension of tear film yields the increase in the adhesion between the cornea and lens while the initial rotation of lens is inversely proportional to the surface tension of the tear film.

Properties of Dangmyuns Using Different Starches and Freeze Dried Dangmyuns (몇가지 전분으로 만든 당면과 동결건조 당면의 특성)

  • The study was performed to investigate the degrees of gelatinization at various processing steps during the preparation of Dangmyuns using sweet potato, potato, corn and tapioca starches, and also determined the rehydration of the freeze dried sweet potato Dangmyun. The degrees of gelatinization after extrusion cooking showed higher value than other processing steps. The degrees of gelatinization after extrusion cooking were 63.5% in sweet potato, 80.0% in potato, 82.3% in corn, and 86.5% in tapioca Dangmyuns. The degree of gelatinization in Dangmyuns after extrusion cooking step decreased as the processing steps, such as cold storage, freezing, thawing, and sun drying, progressed. L values of color in Dangmyuns decreased in the order of corn>tapioca>potato>sweet potato Dangmyuns. The cooking loss decreased in the order of tapioca>corn>potato>sweet potato Dangmyuns. The percentage of weight gain was the highest in sweet potato Dangmyun followed by corn, potato, and tapioca Dangmyuns. The water absorption rate constant was the highest in sweet potato Dangmyun followed by corn, potato, and tapioca Dangmyuns. In the rehydration of freeze dried Dangmyuns, freeze dried sweet potato Dangmyun showed better than the others. An increase from 60% to 70% of the added amount of water in the mixing step resulted in an increase of the degrees of gelatinization after extrusion cooking from $63.4{\sim}70.7%$ to $73.8{\sim}75.0%$. An increase of the added water in the mixing step and a decrease of diameter in the extrusion cooking step slightly improved the rehydration in the boiled water of freeze dried sweet potato Dangmyun.

  • To investigate the storage behavior of the defective LWR spent fuel, air-oxidation tests on non-irradiated and irradiated U $O_2$ were performed. The weight gains of non-irradiated U $O_2$ specimens are characterized by the S-shape curves at 250-40$0^{\circ}C$ temperature range. One hundred percent conversion of U $O_2$ to U$_3$ $O_{8}$ corresponds with about 4% weight increase. The activation energies are 110 kJ/mol above 35$0^{\circ}C$ and 153 kJ/mol below 35$0^{\circ}C$. The irradiated U $O_2$ specimens with about 35 GWD/MTU burnup were oxidized at 300-40$0^{\circ}C$ in air. They show a rapid increase of weight gain at the initial stage and a slow increase at the later stage when compared with non-irradiated U $O_2$. The activation energy under these conditions is 95 kJ/mol. Burnup and aging effects of irradiated U $O_2$ were also investigated at 35$0^{\circ}C$ in air environment, but the specimens appears insensitive to these variables.s.

Effect of Hydrocolloids on the Quality of Rice Dumpling Skins (Hydrocolloids가 쌀만두피 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated the formation of rice dumpling skins with various food additives to improve their texture. Rice (Millyang260 and Hanarum) was obtained from the Rural Development Administration. Rice was milled through an air classifying mill (ACM), and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), xanthan gum, guar gum, carrageenan, or propylene glycol alginate (PGA) was used as food additives. The effects of hydrocolloids on textural were evaluated and rice dumpling skin prepared with additives showed significantly higher values than the control for cooking properties and texture. The presence of hydrocolloids in rice dumpling skin appeared to decrease its weight and volume after cooking. Textural properties of rice dumpling skin with hydrocolloids were similar to the control regardless of cooking condition.

  • The studies was conducted to establish the indoor overwintering methods for productive honeybee colonies in the wintering chamber which provides satisfactory imide temperature ranging $2{\sim}9^{\circ}C$ and ventilation for the wintering hooeybee colonies in Korea. Mortality of the indoor wintered hooeybee colonies was 6.3~7.1% during the winter season of 1997~1998 and 5~10% during the winter season of 1998~1999. The decreased rates of colony weights dwing the wintering season were 10.6~10.7% in the strong colonies and 10.2~11.7% in the weak colonies. The increased rates of colony population overwintered in the chamber were 136.1~142.3% in the strong colonies and 128~136.5% in the weak colonies.

  • Experiments and numerical analysis have been performed to investigate the effect of preoxidation by oxidizing Zircaloy-4 specimens at a higher temperature after a period of exposure at a lower temperature. The oxidation experiments were performed between $700^{\circ}C$ and 85$0^{\circ}C$ after Preoxidation at $650^{\circ}C$ in a steam and water mixture for 600 seconds and 1,800 seconds. As the thickness of preoxidized layer increased, the oxidation rate of preoxidized specimens at higher temperature became lower than that of as-received claddings. A transition region of oxidation rate exist in the preoxidized specimens, and the region disappeared rapidly as the oxidation temperature increased. This effect appeared more clearly at lower temperatures. According to the results of numerical analysis performed in this study, the growth rate of oxide layer thickness and weight gains were similarly affected by the thickness of preoxidized layer.

Teratological Evaluation of Azinphos-Methyl in Rat Fetuses (Azinphos-methyl이 랫트 태아에 미치는 기형학적 연구)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the teratological potential of azinphos-methyl in the rat fetuses and to establish the nature of the effects on organogenesis and intrauterine development. The Sprague-Dawley female rats (180-210g) without previous litter were used in this study. Azinphos-methyl dosages of 0.094mg/kg, 0.4mg/kg, 1.5mg/kg were selected based on the acute intragastric $LD_{50}$ of 15mg/kg in the rat. Azinphos-methyl in water (Treatment Group), non-treatment control (Negative Control), water control (Sham Control), were administered by oral route and aqueous solution of acetyl salicylic acid (Positive Control) was administered by gavage at rate of 10 ml/kg of body weight from day 6 through 15. The results obtained were summarized as follows. 1. Decreased body weight of dams was observed in animals treated with aspirin and azinphos-methyl 1.5 mg/kg from day 7 through 14. (P<0.01) 2. There was an apparent decrement in the absolute liver weight in the azinphos-methyl 1.5 mg/kg treated group (P<0.05). However, the absolute and relative kidney weight in aspirin group (P<0.05, P<0.01) and the absolute and relative ovary weight in aspirin, azinphos-methyl treatment groups (P<0.01, P<0.05) were increased. 3. Decreased protein contents of dam's liver was observed in the aspirin and high dose azinphos-methyl treated group of animals (P<0.01). 4. The number of male-female ratio per dam increased in azinphos-methyl 1.5 mg/kg group but there was an apparent decrement in the body weight of fetuses in aspirin and high dose azinphos-methyl group (P<0.01, P<0.05). Total immature and resorbed fetuses were increased in aspirin group and the number of dead fetuses were also increased in azinphos-methyl 1.5mg/kg treated group of animals. (P<0.01, P<0.05). 5. In soft tissue defects, diaphragmatic hernia in diaphragm, anophthalmia, enlarged olfactory bulb, hydrocephalus, absence of third and lateral ventricle in skull, hydronephrosis in kidney, atrophy of left ventricle wall, enlarged apex in heart were observed. Especially, defects of diaphragm, heart and eye ball showed peak incidences in the high dose azinphosmethyl and aspirin group. (P<0.01). 6. Variations in the ossification patterns of skull, sternebrae, tail, forelimbs and hindlimbs showed peak incidences in the aspirin and high dose azinphos-methyl group. (P<0.01). 7. In the developmental indices of offspring, the mortality of aspirin and azinphos-methyl 1.5mg/kg treated group was higher than that of negative control. And, there was an apparent decrement in the body weight of fetuses (P<0.01) and considerable differences were obtained in pivoting, development of fur, auditory function, vision, quadrupled muscle development and testes descent in aspirin and azinphos-methyl 1.5mg/kg group.
