  • The modified supercritical water treatment method is adopted for hydrolysis of wood powder, Populus alba$\times$glandulosa. This modified method is containing 0.05% HCl or $HNO_3$ as acid catalyst. The supercritical water treatment(SCW) was performed for 1 min. with $350^{\circ}C$, $380^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$ and $425^{\circ}C$, respectively, under 230 $\pm$ 10 atm using continuous flow system. When acid was added to powder prepared for SCW treatment, the yields of monomeric sugars were significantly increased. The lignin remained after supercritical treatment was applied to gel permeation chromatography(GPC) for molecular weight distribution analysis. Compared to the lignin produced from SCW treatment without acid catalyst, the average molecular weight of lignin compounds treated with acid was clearly decreased. Particularly, Mn/Mw ratio is decreased. This result shows supercritical water treatment of wood powder can change the molecular weight of lignin to small size. However, it is necessary to be further studied for exactly characterizing the lignin produced from supercritical water treatment.

  • A pretreatment process of cellulose decomposition to a monosaccharide plays an important role in the cellulosic ethanol production using the lignocellulosic biomass. In this study, a cellulosic ethanol was produced by using acidic hydrolysis and enzymatic saccharification process from the lignocellulosic biomass such as rice straw, sawdust, copying paper and newspaper. Three different pretreatment processes were compared; the acidic hydrolysis ($100^{\circ}C$, 1 h) using 10~30 wt% of sulfuric acid, the enzymatic saccharification (30 min) using celluclast ($55^{\circ}C$, pH = 5.0), AMG ($60^{\circ}C$, pH = 4.5), and spirizyme ($60^{\circ}C$, pH = 4.2) and also the hybrid process (enzymatic saccharification after acidic hydrolysis). The yield of cellulosic ethanol conversion with those pretreatment processes were obtained as the following order : hybrid process > acidic hydrolysis > enzymatic saccharification. The optimum fermentation time was proven to be two days in this work. The yield of cellulosic ethanol conversion using celluclast after the acidic hydrolysis with 20 wt% sulfuric acid were obtained as the following order : sawdust > rice straw > copying paper > newspaper when conducting enzymatic saccharification.

  • Effects of aqueous ammonia soaking to three annual plants (hemp woody core, tobacco stalk and corn stover) awere investigated to focus on the enzymatic saccharification characteristics change by this treatment. At two different levels of treatment ($90^{\circ}C$-16 h and $45^{\circ}C$-6 days), higher temperature treatment led to more enzymatic saccharification of cellulose to glucose by commercial cellulase mixtures (Celluclast 1.5L and Novozym 342 from Novozyme Korea). Difference among annual plants were significant. corn stover was the best response to enzymatic saccharification of cellulose and xylan by comercial enzymes all treatment conditions but tobacco stalk was the worst response to all of them. chemical composition or physical structure difference may brought this difference.

  • Recently, densified pollet fuel from wood biomass is widely used at North America and Europe as a regenerable and clean carbon neutral bioenergy. High-pressure compaction of sawdust of several species of wood to form a densified fuel was studied. Calorific and elemental analysis were carried out to assess pellet fuels Hot-press process was adopted for compact ion of sawdust and compaction was performed under prescribed condition. Densified fuels were evaluated by its oven-dry density and fines after 5-minute shaking test. The target density and fines of densified fuels were over $1.2g/cm^3$ and below 0.5%, respectively. When the press-temperature is over $60^{\circ}C$ densified fuels with density over $1.2g/cm^3$ and with fines below 0.5% can be produced. And the pressure over $1000kgf/cm^2$ was effect ive for this production.

  • Torrefaction is a thermochemical process proceeded at the temperature around $250^{\circ}C$ in an inert gas condition. By torrefaction, the hemicellulose portions contained in biomass are broken down to change into the volatile gas which is removed from biomass eventually. The main purpose of biomass torrefaction is to improve the energy density of the biomass to minimize the transport energy consumption, though the flammability can be elevated for transportation. In this study two types of solid biomass fuel, waste wood and rice straw, were torrefied at various temperature range from $200^{\circ}C$ to $300^{\circ}C$ to evaluate the torrefied biomass characteristics. In addition torrefied biomass were tested to evaluate the combustion characteristics using TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis). After the torrefaction of biomass, the C/H (carbon to hydrogen ratio) and C/O (carbon to oxygen ratio) were measured for aquisition of bio-stability as well as combustion pattern. Generally C/H ratio implies the soot formation during combustion, and the C/O ratio for bio-stability. By torrefaction temperature at $300^{\circ}C$, C/H ratio and C/O ratio were increased by two times for C/H and three times for C/O. The torrefied biomass showed similar TGA pattern to coal compared to pure biomass; that is, less mass decrease at lower temperature range for torrefied biomass than the pure biomass.

  • This study was conducted to assess forest biomass resource which is a carbon sink and a renewable resource in Korea. The total forest biomass resource potential was 804 million tons, and conifers, broadleaved forest and mixed forest accounted for 265 million tons, 282 million tons, and 257 million tons, respectively. Proportionately to regional forest stocks, biomass potential of Gangwon-do had most biomass potential, followed by Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gyeongsangnam-do. The woody biomass from the byproduct of sawn timber in commercial harvesting was 707 thousand ton/year, and that from the byproduct of forest tending was 592 thousand ton/year. The amount resulted in about 1,300 thousand ton/year of potential supplies from forest biomass resource into the energy market. It's tonnage of oil equivalent(toe) was 585 thousand ton/year. In this study, we developed a program (BiomassMap V2.0) for forest biomass resource mapping. Used system to develop this program was Microsoft Office Excel, Microsoft Office Access ArcGIS and Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0. Additionally, This program made use of tool such as ESRI MapObjects2.1 in order to take advantage of spatial information. This program shows the map of total biomass stock, annual biomass growth at forest land in Korea, and biomass production from forest tending and commercial harvesting. The information can also be managed by the program. The biomass resource map can be identified by regional and forest type for the purpose of utilization. So, we expect the map and program to be very useful for forest managers in the near future.

  • The selective removal and recovery of fermentation inhibitors during purification of sugars from biomass hydrolysates can increase the economic efficiency of the entire process to produce bioalcohol from lignocellulosic biomass. This study investigated the effect of furans in phenols-free biomass hydrolysate on acetic acid extraction in an emulsion liquid membrane system. Under specific operating conditions, more than 99% of acetic acid could be extracted within 5 minutes, and the degrees of extraction of furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural were about 10% and 4%, respectively. The extraction rate of acetic acid was also lower at a higher initial concentration of furfural in the feed phase, which was greater for furfural than 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. Thus, if furfural is first removed from the hydrolysate prior to acetic acid extraction, emulsion liquid membrane would be a more economically efficient way of removing acetic acid.

  • The possible inhibitory effect of wood hydrolyzate in lactic acid fermentation was partially decreased by adaptation of Enterococcus faecalis RKY1 to wood hydrolyzate-based medium. The strain RKY1 grown on wood hydrolyzate-based medium was tolerant to wood hydrolyzate medium with fermentation efficiency being improved to approximately 20% higher than that obtained with the strain RKY1 grown on glucose-based medium.
