  • It is widely known that the level of fire resistance of wooden structure is determined by a charring rate or charring depth, and these are adopted for fire design. In this study, specimens of domestic larch column with a lamination wooden type were prepared and the fire resistance properties such as the charring depth, load ratio and the specific charring rate suggested by EN Code investigated. Test results showed that as expected, the weakest part was the corner of the column, so that the charring depth of the corner was deeper than the other parts of the column. For the load ratio less than 0.9, it had little effect on the charring depth.

  • To figure out the problems of flame retardant treatment (FRT) on wooden buildings, field investigation and analysis of statistical data are performed. After FRT on historical wooden building, efflorescence and exfoliation showed most often. These problems appeared especially on column, rafter and Ga-gu (Ingredients for supporting structure of a roof) which are liberally spreaded. To compare before and after FRT, analyzed 20 elements using P-XRF. In this process, found sulfur which informs FRT. This helped set up nondestructive assay. Through this process, confirmed field application by analysis residue component of Songgwang-sa Temple.

  • Recently, demands for the structural uses with domestic Japanese larch and SPF(spruce-pine-fir) lumber from North America have been increased. Shear properties of nailed joints that are the most simple and optimum fastening method in wooden constructions, especially in light frame construction. For the nailed joints, in North America and Japan, a number of basic and practical studies have been performed. The shear behaviors for the double nailed joint with variations of member and its direction, were examined. Shear properties of the shear specimens with SPF stud showed more remarkable variation than larch glulam and larch stud. Furthermore, the relationships between slip modulus and strength are not coincided in every case.

  • In the post-beam structure, the infilled light-frame construction provides most shear strengths. Shear properties of the light-frame structure can be estimated from the shear properties of nailed connection for the sheathings, and those of nailed connections can be done from nail bending strengths. For the basic study to predict the yield strength and the slip modulus of a nailed sheathing shear wall, those of a nailed joint were examined from nail bending strengths. To estimate shear properties of a nailed connection, referenced bearing strength and bearing constant for the wood members and the experimental nail bending strengths of the helically threaded nail were applied. The yield strength using the diameter at grooves instead of shank diameter was well coincided with the experimental value, but the slip modulus was estimated much smaller. The effective factors, specific gravity for the main member, withdrawal by nail head diameter to the side member, and embedment and moment at the nail head were considered, and further examinations are needed for the precise prediction of the nailed connections.

  • In order to provide fundamental data for development of controlled environment facilities in Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) cultivation, field survey and analysis of structural and environmental engineering characteristics on the shading structures in ginseng fields (the ginseng houses) were carried out. In this study shading structures for ginseng cultivation were classified according to their structural materials, connection types, and detailed structures. That is they were classified into wood or steel frames, single or multi spans, and frame or cable types. As a result of the investigation, standardization of structural materials, fabrication and construction methods arc required. And it was considered that a reinforced design and a countermeasure for heavy snow are the most important matters for structural improvement. In parts of the environmental management, researches for setting up the irrigation standard are required in the first place. And it was investigated that an installation of the shading structures is a work being the most hard, taking a lot of time, and having need for automation. So controlled environment ginseng houses, with a low cost, a structural safety and a satisfactory workability, should be developed.

  • Recently, the demand and supply on the Hanok have been increased. However, Hanok should be requested larger section of structural members because of excessive roof weight. So, structural skin-timber was manufactured to get a lightweight structural member. The structural skin-timber has exterior shape with larger section but a great volume of wood be removed. The reduced strength of structural skin-timber can be supplemented by hybridizaion of structural member. Japanese larch and Domestic pine were used to manufacture the structural skin-timber. Structural skin-timbers of rectangular shape and cylinder shape were manufactured and tested to evaluate the bending properties. The intended strength property could not be obtained because member had been suffered severe damage by precision deficiency of manufacturing machine. However, if precision of manufacturing machine would be improved and additional hybridizaion of structural skin-timber would be done, lightweight structural member will be able to be manufactured. Structural skin-timber did not showed statistical significancy between two species, so it is possible to use pine mixed with larch. Only MOR of larch showed statistical significancy between rectangular shape and cylinder shape, so it is necessary to use of those as separate things. However, the rest of skin-timber can be judged mixed using because of non statistical significancy. The objective of this study was the development of lightweight larger structural member with relatively strength. If hybrid member of skin-timber could be developed with wood-ceramics, lightweight steel and more, it can be possible to be used as a building material of Hanok, interior material, post & beam construction material and more.

  • Despite Korea forest take 63.7% of the nation's territory, productivity of domestic structural lumber is low. Studies of domestic small lumbers need to be improved domestic structural timber productivity. In this study, small diameter lumber and finger joint small diameter lumber took bending test to calculate MOE and MOR. MOE of small diameter lumber was $9.3kN/mm^2$ and MOE of finger joint small diameter lumber was $15.4kN/mm^2$. Allowable standard bending stress of small diameter lumber and finger joint small diameter lumber was calculated according to ASTM D 2915. Standard allowable bending stress of small diameter lumber was $12N/mm^2$ and standard allowable bending stress of finger joint small diameter lumber was $11N/mm^2$. Standard allowable bending stress of finger joint small diameter lumber should be considered to design structural beam members.

  • In order to use glued built up timber beam as a structural member for post and beam construction, it must be possible to manufacture long-span lumber. In this study, the researchers conducted a performance evaluation for longitudinal bonding of lumber (cross-section $89{\times}120mm$) made from larch. The specimens were prepared in six different forms using the longitudinal bonding method. The bonding strength of these specimens was tested through tensile strength tests and bending strength tests. The tensile strength test result of the longitudinally bonded parts was better than that of the double lap specimens. And, the tensile strength value of the scarf specimen was better than that of the hooked scarf specimen. The tensile strength of the GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic) rod insertion bonding specimen was 3.6 MPa, which was the highest. As for the bending strength test result of the longitudinally bonded part, the average MOR (modulus of rupture) of the specimen where a GFRP rod was inserted and bonded measured 29 MPa, while the specimens of other bonded parts showed a MOR no more than 11 MPa. Toughness destruction was observed in specimens where a GFRP rod was insertion-bonded. The rest of the specimens showed brittle destruction. The average MOR strength of the Rod + Lap specimen was 30.5 MPa, which was the highest among all longitudinally bonded specimens. The bending strength of the Rod + Lap specimens showed an effective strength that was 66% of that of the control group which were not longitudinally bonded.
