  • The overall area of Taiwan is 36,006 km$^2$ and population was about 22,535,000 persons in 2003. The population density became 625persons/km$^2$. The economic of Taiwan progress since 1970. Gross national production in 2004 increased by 2.3 trillion or 493% relative to 1981. The number of automobiles in 1981 was 821,862, and increase to 6,389,186 in 2004. The number of motorcycles in 1981 were 4,591,547 and increase to 12,793,950 in 2004. The vehicle growth rate of automobile and motorcycle was 677% and 178% respectively. The recycling end-of-life vehicles(ELVs) is specified in the Waste Disposal Act. Its main content is the system of asking the vehicle manufacturer and importing agents, who are responsible for recycling of the ELVs. The recycling task on ELVs was startedinitially in 1993. It is required that the manufacturers and importing agents deposit certain ratios of Waste Vehicle Disposal Fees proportional to the number of vehicle they manufacture and import into Taiwan under sales. This report will introduce the current status of ELVs recycling in Taiwan, and the future direction, as well as measures proceeding for the EPA- Fund Management Committee(RMFC) operating in the fiture.

  • The friction test using disk-on-pad type was carried out and regression analysis with friction parameters was applied fur wear loss presumption of motorcycle break disk. The wear loss has an effect on the frictional factor such as applied load, sliding speed, and number of ventilated disk hole. However, it is difficult to know the mutual relation of these factors on wear loss of motorcycle break disk. From this study, the result was shown that the regression analysis equation containing 4 elements were constructed and this equation had a trust of 95% in wear loss presumption of motorcycle break disk. It is possible to apply for another automobile parts.

  • Finite element analysis of impact response of a motorcycle helmet is presented in this paper. The finite element LS-DYNA3D code is used to simulate the impact response of the helmet including of plastic shell, foam liner, and magnesium headform. Since the maximum accelerations at center of gravity of the headform obtained by numerical analysis and experiment agree well, the numerical simulation is proved to be valid.

  • Studies on brake system recently are focused on braking performance, especially the consideration on safety of braking system in an extreme situation and reduction of vibration and noise during braking operation. The thermal crack and Judder from the friction between brake disc and pad can bring the threaten of passengers' safety in the end. Braking force comes from the change of kinetic energy to friction energy. Since heat energy is developed from here, the analysis on thermal stress and thermal strain can be the good data when selecting the material of brake pad and designing heat radiation holes on the disc and it will also be the data when designing the thickness of the disc. This paper is intended to show a creative design method by suggesting the thermal analysis data through FEM study and using shape design parameters.

  • The thermal deformation volume of motorcycle break disk was studied using a disk-on-pad type friction tester. Thermal deformation volume of motorcycle break disk have an effect on the frictional factor such as applied load, sliding speed, sliding distance and number of ventilated disk hole. However, it is difficult to know the mutual relation of these factors on thermal deformation volume. In this study, the thermal deformation volume with ANSYS workbench are obtained by application of temperature from mechanical test. From this study, the result was shown that the motorcycle break disk with ventilated hole 3 have the most excellent thermal deformation characteristics. The regression equation with frictional factors which have a trust rate of 95% for prediction of thermal deformation volume of motorcycle break disk was composed.

Such parameters conditions have an effect on the frictional factor such as number of ventilated disk hole, applied load, sliding speed, and sliding distance. However, it is difficult to know the mutual relation of these factors. In this study, the friction characteristics using design of experiment containing 4 elements were investigated for an optimal condition for the best motorcycle break system employing regression analysis method. From this study, the result was shown that the applied load in frictional factors was the most important, next to sliding speed, number of ventilated disk hole.

  • This paper presents an of a brake pressure restriction valve to a motorcycle anti-lock brake system(ABS). In the conventional anti-lock brake system of automobiles, slip ratio as a control variable is actively controlled, which requires wheel speed sensors, ECU, and a pressure modulator. In the ABS valve that has been developed for use in motorcycles, however, the brake pressure that is close to the wheel locking pressure is preset by simple exercises and then the valve just allows to pass the wheel locking pressure and cutoff the remaining pressure. Simulation studies with a single wheel braking dynamics and lumped chassis model show that the pressure restriction valve has basic ABS functions as well as some robustness properties for the uncertain load and road conditions as well as various initial braking speeds. Field tests also show that the pressure restriction valve avoids the wheel locking effectively.
