  • This paper presents a new method for the motion detection of vehicles using hierarchical motion estimation and parallel processing. It captures the road image by using a CMOS sensor. It divides the captured image into small blocks and detects the motion of each block by using a block-matching method which is based on a hierarchical motion estimation and parallel processing for the real-time processing. The parallelism is achieved by using tile pipeline and the data flow technique. The proposed method has been implemented by using an embedded system. The proposed block matching algorithm has been implemented on PLDs(Programmable Logic Device) and clustering algorithm has been implemented by ARM processor. Experimental results show that the proposed system detects the motion of vehicles in real-time.

  • We Propose a sensor fusion technique for motion capture system. In our system, two kinds of sensors are used for mutual assistance. Four magnetic sensors(markers) are attached on the upper arms and the back of the hands for assisting twelve optical sensors which are attached on the arms of a performer. The optical sensor information is not always complete because the optical markers can be hidden due to obstacles. In this case, magnetic sensor information is used to link discontinuous optical sensor information. We use a system identification techniques for modeling the relation between the sensors' signals. Dynamic systems are constructed from input-output data. We determine the best model from the set of candidate models using the canonical system identification techniques. Our approach is using a simple signal processing technique currently. In the future work, we will propose a new method using other signal processing techniques such as Wiener or Kalman filter.

  • We developed a motion capture system to get angle data of human joints in walking mode. The data are used to coordinate the biped-walking robot developed in our laboratory. A pair of motion capture system is composed of three links with the ankle, knee, and pelvis joints. The system has six axes attached with potentiometers. We used an A/D converter was used to get digital data from joint angles. We filterd the data using the Butterworth 4th order digital filter, and simulated walking motion based on the data using the Matlab.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the personalized treacmill exercise analysis using a smart mirror based on Kinect sensor. To evaluate the performance of the development system, 10 health males were used to measure the range of the hip joint, knee joint, and ankle joint using a smart mirror when walking on a treadmill. For the validity and reliability of the development system, the validity and reliability were analyzed by comparing the human movement data measured by the Kinect sensor with the human movement data measured by the infrared motion capture device. As a result of validity verification, the correlation coefficient r=0.871~0.919 showed a high positive correlation, and through linear regression analysis, the validity of the smart mirror system was 88%. Reliability verification was conducted by ICC analysis. As a result of reliability verification, the correlation coefficient r=0.743~0.916 showed high correlation between subjects, and the consistency for repeated measurement was also very high at ICC=0.937. In conclusion, despite the disadvantage that Kinect sensor is less accurate than the motion capture system, Kinect is it has the advantage of low price and real-time information feedback. This means that the Kinect sensor is likely to be used as a tool for evaluating exercise prescription through human motion measurement and analysis.

  • In this paper, we describes the boxing motion recognition which is used in the part of games, animation. To recognize the boxing motion, we have used two algorithms, one is principle component analysis, the other is dynamic time warping algorithm. PCA is the simplest of the true eigenvector-based multivariate analyses and often used to reduce multidimensional data sets to lower dimensions for analysis. DTW is an algorithm for measuring similarity between two sequences which may vary in time or speed. We introduce and compare PCA and DTW algorithms respectively. We implemented the recognition of boxing motion on the motion capture system which is developed in out research, and depict the system also. The motion graph will be created by boxing motion data which is acquired from motion capture system, and will be normalized in a process. The result has implemented in the motion recognition system with five actors, and showed the performance of the recognition.

  • This paper describes a monocular PSD-based motion capture sensor to employ with commercial video game systems such as Microsoft's XBOX and Sony's Playstation II. The system compact, low-cost, and only requires a one-time calibration at the factory. The system includes a PSD(Position Sensitive Detector) and active infrared (IR) LED markers that are placed on the object to be tracked. The PSD sensor is placed in the focal plane of a wide-angle lens. The micro-controller calculates the 3D position of the markers using only the measured intensity and 2D position on the PSD. A series of experiments were performed to evaluate the performance of our prototype system. From the experimental results we see that the proposed system's compact size, low-cost, ease of installation, and high frame rates are suitable for high speed motion tracking in games.

  • In this paper, we deal with a calibration method for low cost motion capture sensor using PSD (Position Sensitive Detection). The PSD sensor is employed to measure the direction of incident light from moving markers attached to motion body. To calibrate the PSD optical module, a conventional camera calibration algorithm introduced by Tsai. The 3-dimensional positions of the markers are measured by using stereo camera geometry. From the experimental results, the low cost motion capture sensor can be used in a real time system.

  • We described a real-time 3D computer vision system called MIMIC(Motion interface f Motion information Capture system) that can capture and save motion of an actor. This system analyzes input images from vision sensors and searches feature information like a head, hands, and feet. Moreover, this estimates intermediated joints as an elbow and hee using feature information and makes 3D human model having 20 joints. This virtual human model mimics the motion of an actor in real-time. Therefore this system can realize the movement of an actor unaffectedly because of making intermediated joint for complete human body contrary to other marker-free motion capture system.

  • Motion capture systems are gaining popularity in entertainment, medicine, sports, education, and industry, with animation and gaming applications for entertainment taking the lead. A wide variety of systems are available for motion capture, but most of them are complicated and expensive. In the general class of optical motion capture, two or more optical sensors are needed to measure the 3D positions of the markers attached to the body. Recently, a 3D motion capture system using two Position Sensitive Detector (PSD) optical sensors was introduced to capture high-speed motion of an active infrared LED marker. The PSD-based system, however, is limited by a geometric calibration procedure for two PSD sensor modules that is too difficult for common customers. In this research, we have introduced a new system that used a single PSD sensor unit to obtain 3D positions of active IR LED-based markers. This new system is easy to calibrate and inexpensive.
