  • This study focuses on the air to air missile control fin planform optimization for the minimizing hinge moment with the considering phenomena of fluid and structure simultaneously. The fluid-structure interaction method is applied for the fluid and structure phenomena simulation of the control fins. A transient-loosely coupled method is used for the fluid-structure interaction simulation because it is suited for using each fluid and structure dedicated simulation software. Searching global optimization point is required many re-calculation therefore in this study, a mathematical model is applied for rapidly calculation. The face centered central composite method is used for generating design points and the 2nd polynomial response surface is sued for generating mathematical model. Global optimization is performed by using the generic algorithm. An objective function is the minimizing travel distance of the center of pressure between Mach 0.7 and 2.0 condition. Finally, the objective function of optimized planform is reduced 7.5% than the baseline planform with satisfying constrained conditions.

  • Magnetic Suspension and Balance System (MSBS) demonstrates the capacity to levitate an experimental model absent any mechanical contact using magnetic forces and moments. It allows precise control of position and attitude of the model, and measures external forces and moments acting on the model. For the purpose of acquisition of reliable experimental results under stable and safe conditions, the performance and robustness of the position and attitude control system of MSBS needs to be improved. To this end, Iterative Feedback Tuning (IFT) and L1 adaptive output feedback algorithm were employed to automatically increase command following performance and to ensure robust operation of MSBS with failure of electric power supply. The applicability was validated using computational simulation.

  • After an accident involving mooring link failures in an offloading buoy, verification of the fatigue safety in terms of the out-of-plane bending (OPB) and in-plane bending (IPB) moments has become a key engineering item in the design of various floating offshore units. The mooring links for an 8 MW floating offshore wind turbine were selected for this study. To identify the OPB stiffness (OPB moment versus interlink angle), a numerical simulation model, called the 3-link model, is usually composed of three successive chain links closest to the fairlead or chain hawse. This paper introduces two numerical simulation techniques for the 3-link analyses. The conventional and advanced approaches are both based on the prescribed rotation approach (PRA) and direct tension approach (DTA). Comparisons of the nominal stress distributions, OPB stiffnesses, hotspot stress curves, and stress concentration curves are presented. The multiple link analyses used to identify the tension angle versus interlink angle require the OPB stiffness data from the 3-link analyses. A convergence study was conducted to determine the minimum number of links for a multi-link analysis. It was proven that 10 links were sufficient for the multi-link analysis. The tension angle versus interlink angle relations are presented based on multi-link analyses with 10 links. It was found that the subsequent results varied significantly according to the 3-link analysis techniques.

  • This paper presents a new key frame extraction technique, for scene change detection, using the proposed AHIM (Accumulative Histogram Intersection Measure) from the DC image constructed by DCT DC coefficients in the compressed video sequence that is video compression standard such as MPEG. For fast content-based browsing and video retrieval in a video database, we also provide a novel coarse-to-fine video indexing scheme. In the extracted key frame, we perform the region segmentation as a preprocessing. First, the segmented image is projected with the horizontal direction, then we transform the result into a histogram, which is saved as a database index. In the second step, we calculate the moments and change them into a distance value. From the simulation results, the proposed method clearly shows the validity and superiority in respect of computation time and memory space, and that in conjunction with other techniques for indexing, such as color, can provide a powerful framework for image indexing and retrieval.

  • In this research, optimization of a dual-band dipole array was performed using genetic algorithm. A non-uniform, aperture-shared linear array was configured with dipoles which resonate at 4 GHz and 9.5 GHz. The excited current distributions on dipoles were computed considering mutual coupling between dipole elements. The current distributions were also computed using method of moment (MoM). The optimization using genetic algorithm was performed to obtain the low sidelobe levels in two operating frequency band. The PSLs of the optimized array for 4 GHz and 9.5 GHz are -15.7 dB and -17 dB, respectively. Comparison between computed and simulated results are also discussed.

  • This paper describes the method for detecting vehicles in the rear and rear-side at night by using headlight features. A headlight is the outstanding feature that can be used to discriminate a vehicle from a dark background. In the segmentation process, a night image is transformed to a binary image that consists of black background and white regions by gray-level thresholding, and noise in the binary image is eliminated by a morphological operation. In the feature extraction process, the geometric features and moment invariant features of a headlight are defined, and they are measured in each segmented region. Regions that are not appropriate to a headlight are filtered by using geometric feature measurement. In region classification, a pair of headlights is detected by using relational features based on the symmetry of a pair of headlights. Experimental results show that this method is very applicable to an approaching vehicle detection system at nighttime.

  • The main objective of this study is to develop an optimization algorithm of framed structures with rigid and various semi-rigid connections using the multilevel dynamic programming and the sequential unconstrained minimization techniques (SUMT). The second-order elastic analysis is performed for steel framed structures. The second order elastic analysis is developed based on nonlinear beam-column theory considering the bowing effect. The following semi-rigid connections are considered; double web angle, top-seat angle and top-seat angle with web angle. We considered the three connection models, such as modified exponential, polynomial and three parameter model. The total weight of the structural steel is used as the objective function in the optimization process. The dimensions of steel cross section are selected as the design variables. The design constraints consist of strength requirements for axial, shear and flexural resistance and serviceability requirements.

  • To examine the solution structure of electrolytes, it is very important to understand ion-ion and ion-solvent interactions. In this review, we introduce the basic principle of dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS) and studies of electrolyte structure. DRS is a type of impedance method, which measures the dielectric properties of electrolytes over a high frequency domain at levels of tens of GHz. Therefore, DRS provides information on the different polar chemical species present in the electrolyte, including the type and concentration of free solvents and ion pairs with dipole moments. The information of DRS is complementary to the information of conventional analytical techniques (Infrared/Raman spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), etc.) and thus enables a broad understanding of electrolyte structure.

  • On January 1, 2024, an earthquake with a moment magnitude of 7.5 occurred on the Noto Peninsula in Japan. The earthquake caused significant surface displacement on the Noto Peninsula. The surface displacement is measured by global navigation satellite system (GNSS) base stations, but there are limitations in obtaining information in areas where base stations do not exist. Therefore, in this study, we aim to determine the horizontal land surface displacement across the Noto Peninsula using offset tracking, which can detect rapidly occurring displacement. As a result of analyzing the Noto Peninsula using the offset tracking technique, it was found that more horizontal surface displacement occurred in the northwest region than in the northeast region of the Noto Peninsula, where the epicenter was located, and the surface displacement value reached a maximum of 2.9 m. The results of this study can be used to calculate surface displacement values in areas where surface displacement data are not available through ground GNSS base stations.

  • Modern wooden structures usually are connected with steel fastener type connectors. And joints using multiple connectors in wooden structures will form semi-rigid connection. If connection in wooden structure would be designed to be pinned joint, the underestimate for loads transmitted through connection, would result in the deficient capacity of resistance in connection. And if joints in wooden structures would be assumed to be fully-rigid joint, amount of fasteners needed at the connection could be excessively increased. It will give a bad effect in the view of beauty, constructability and economy. Estimate for the reasonable stiffness of connection might be essential in design of reasonable connection in wooden structure. This paper will suggest analysis modelling technique that can represent approximate stiffness of connections using a common analysis program for double shear connection in order to give help in performing easily the design of wooden structure. It is verified that the suggested approximate analysis modelling technique could represent the behavior in connection by comparing the analysis results with test results for tensile, bending moment.
