The current specifications for bridge decks requires the same amount of upper and lower reinforcement mats. There have been many empirical activities that the partial elimination of upper reinforcing bars was not caused the structural integrity of a deck. A simplified method is derived based on thin plate theory for three and four-girder-span bridge decks. A simplified method for bridge deck considering the effect of girder deflection is proposed based on a closed-form solution that shows good agreement with the results of finite element models. In this research, a new design approach for deck slabs is proposed based on the simplified method. The negative bending moments in a deck can be evaluated with the simplified method based on the position of a wheel load, the aspect ratio and relative stiffness and the span length. This new approach can lead to a significant reduction of the quantity of the top reinforcing steel bars in a deck. Reducing the quantify of the top reinforcement not only reduces the construction costs for bridge decks, but also reduces the corrosion of reinforcement to a minimum.
This paper presents a model for evaluating the contribution by arch action to shear resistance in shear-critical reinforced concrete beams. Based on the relationship between shear and bending moment in beams subjected to combined shear and bending, the behavior of a beam is explicitly divided into two base components of the flexural action and the tied arch action. The compatibility condition of the shear deformation that deviates from Bernoulli bending plane is formulated utilizing the smeared truss idealization with an inclined compression chord. The Modified Compression Filed Theory is employed to calculate the shear deformation of the web, and the relative axial displacements of the compression and the tension chord by the shear flow are also calculated. From this shear compatibility condition in a beam, the shear contribution by the arch action is numerically decoupled. Then the validity of the model is examined by applying the model to some selected test beams in literatures. The results may confirm the rationale of the proposed behavioral model.

The characteristic basis function method, or CFBM, is one of the representative electromagnetic methods widely used today. In this paper, we propose an accelerating algorithm for the far field interaction calculation of CBFM, to efficiently analyze the electromagnetic characteristics of arbitrarily large structures. To effectively analyze the electromagnetic characteristics of a large structure, it is essential to shorten the computation time. In the CBFM analysis method, the complexity can be greatly reduced by using approximations created via the multipole expansion method. The new algorithm proposed in this paper is applied to the computation of radar cross sections of conductor spheres and fighter aircraft, and it is confirmed that calculation time is reduced by 34 % and 74 %, respectively, without loss of accuracy compared with existing CBFM.

An improved stability design method for beam-columns of plane frames is proposed based on system buckling analysis and second-order elastic analysis. For this, the tangent stiffness matrix of beam-column elements is first derived using stability functions and a procedure for evaluating effective buckling lengths is reviewed using elastic system buckling analysis. And then the second-order analysis procedure is presented considering $P-\Delta$ effects and is compared with the closed-form solution through numerical examples. Design examples showing the validity of the proposed method we presented and their numerical results are compared with those obtained from the conventional stability design methods. Finally some useful conclusions are drawn.

Morison formula has been used in the determination of wave forces acting on vertical cylindrical piles of ocean structures. The formula, however, can be applied to mildly varying varying incident waves with symmetrical shapes. The breaking waves impinge on structures with very high impact forces, which completely differ from the inertia and drag forces of the Morison formula in both magnitudes and characteristics. In the present study, a boundary element method is applied to determine the water particle velocity and acceleration under the breaking waves. A numerical model is then developed to determine breaking wave forces utilizing those water particle kinematics. The results of the model is then developed to determine breaking wave forces utilizing those water particle kinematics. The results of the model agree well with existing experimental data, giving maximal wave forces 3 times and maximal moments 5 times larger than the Morison formula does.

Critical response of seawater pump impeller shaft structure to various exciting loads is a fundamental factor in re-designing of the structure after its functional failure. In this paper, a typical case of the shaft structure's failure is investigated for re-designing purposes. Failure causes of interest are excessive bending moment, fatigue loads and dynamic resonance due to relevant motor rotation and unbalancing of the rotation loads. Static analyses of shaft structure under the conditions of concerned loads are carried out, followed by a dynamic investigation of the effects of resonance between the shaft and the motor on the structure. The relevant structural analyses are carried out using the Finite Element Methods combined with ANSYS code. Based on these, the primary cause for the shaft's structural failure is obtained. It is found that the change of the bending stiffness of the shaft is the primary concern in the re-designing process. A guideline for the re-design process of the seawater pump shaft structure is established, and a re-design scheme of the structure is proposed.

This paper concerns the spin-stabilization for the second stage of KSR-III(Korea Sounding Rocket-III). The error sources in the second stage are defined, and then the effect on attitude error of KSR-III is analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Based on the analysis, some conditions for optimal spinning frequency and optimal steady-spinning duration are suggested. Among several solutions, an optimal value can be determined in the point of minimum impact-point error. An approach to a sub-optimal solution is also suggested. Application to the KSR-III shows that a proper spinning frequency and a steady-spin duration to give the smallest impact-point error can be effectively determined.

This paper presents preliminary performance analysis of a satellite formation flying testbed, which is under development by Astrodynamics and Control Laboratory, Department of Astronomy, Yonsei University. A model reference adaptive controller (MRAC) with a first-order reference model is chosen to enhance the response of reaction wheel system which is subject to uncertainties caused by unmodelled dynamics and measurement noise. In addition, an on-line parameter estimation (OPE) technique based on the least square is combined to eliminate the effect of angular measurement noise by estimating the moment of inertia. Both numerical simulations and hardware experiments with MRAC support the effectiveness and applicability of the adaptive control scheme, which maintains the tracking error below $0.25^{\circ}$ for the entire time span. However, the high frequency control input generated in hardware experiment strongly suggests design modifications to reduce the effect of deadzone.

It is matter of common knowledge to give impetus to the water resources development to cope with increasing demand and supply for the water utilization project including agricultural living and industrial water owing to the economic and civilization development in recent years. Regional design rainfall is necessary or the design of the dam reservoir levee and drainage facilities for the development of various kinds of essential waters including agricultural water. For the estimation of the regional design rainfall classification of the climatologically an geographically homogeneous regions should be preceded preferentially This study was mainly conducted to derive the optimal regionalization of the precipitation data which can be classified by the climatologically and geographically homogeneous regions all over the regions except Cheju and Wulreung islands in Korea. A total of 65 rain gauges were used to regional analysis of precipitation. Annual maximum series for the consecutive durations of 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48 and 72hr were used for various statistical analysis. Both K-means clustering and mean annual precipitation methods are used to identify homogeneous regions all over the regions. Nine and five homogeneous regions for the precipitation were classified by the K-means clustering and mean annual methods, respectively. Finally, Five homogeneous regions were established by the trial and error method with homogeneity test using statistics of $\chi$$^2$ distribution.

It is necessary to use prestressed modal analysis to calculate the modal frequencies and mode shapes of a prestressed structure such as a spinning blade, a preloaded structure, or a thermally deformed pipe, because the prestress effect sometimes causes significant changes in the frequencies and mode shapes. When the finite element model under consideration has a very large number of degrees of freedom, repeated prestressed modal analyses for investigating the prestress effects might become too computationally expensive to finish within a reasonable design-process time. To alleviate these computational difficulties, a Krylov subspace-based model order reduction, which reduces the number of degrees of freedom of the original finite element model and speeds up the necessary prestressed modal analysis with the reduced order models (ROMs), is presented. The numerical process for the moment-matching model reduction is performed directly on the full order models (FOMs) (modeled in ANSYS) by the Arnoldi process. To demonstrate the advantages of this approach for performing prestressed modal analysis, the prestressed wheel and the compressor impeller under their high-speed rotation are considered as examples.
