  • The range of applications of artificial neural networks(Am) in many branches of geotechnical engineering is growing rapidly. This study was undertaken to develop an analysis model representing ultrasonically enhanced soil flushing by the use of ANN. Input data for the model-development were obtained by laboratory study, and used for training and verification. Analyses involved various ranges of momentum, loaming rate, activation function, hidden layer, and nodes. Results of the analyses were used to obtain the optimum conditions for establishing and verifying the model. The coefficient of correlation between the measured and the predicted data using the developed model was relatively high. It shows potential application of ANN to ultrasonically enhanced soil flushing which is not easy to build up a mathematical model.

  • In this paper, we propose a fuzzy method to control bit-rate in the DCT Domain. The method consists of a bit-rate allocation with fuzzy measures and a least-distortion bit-rate reduction. Fuzzy measures are calculated by the code length, the discontinuity ambiguity, and the neighborhood momentum in each DCT block. These measures are summed with weights and form a reduction fuzziness to indicate the degree of preferable reduction. Using the reduction fuzziness. each DCT block is filtered by the least-distortion reduction method to adjust the bit-rate for the target bandwidth. In the experiment, we show the results that the transcoded video quality by the method is better and the bandwidth is more regular than those of existing methods in both visually and quantitatively.

  • The knowledge of material stress-strain behavior is an essential requirement for design and analysis of deformation processes. Empirical stress-strain relationship and constitutive equations describing material behavior during deformation are being widely used, despite suffering some drawbacks in terms of ease of development, accuracy and speed. In the present study, back-propagation neural networks are used to model and predict the flow stresses of a HSLA steel under conditions of constant strain, strain rate and temperature. The performance of the network model is comparedto those of statistical models on rate equations. Well-trained network model provides fast and accurate results, making it superior to statistical models.

  • Performance of a dual mode ramjet engine based on the sensitivity analysis of design parameters (the gap between cowl and inlet spike and combustor length) was analyzed from the view points of aerodynamics and thermodynamics. A dual mode engine performing from supersonic to hypersonic (Mach no. 2 to 6) was designed in a proposed flight envelop. The design method and result were comparable to the results of the previous study, Hyperion RLV, and the CFD calculation.

  • The correlations for cross-flow have not been well established, because of the complexity of breakup and atomization mechanism. A study was performed to investigate the characteristics of spray behaviour of liquid jet in the bag breakup regime injected into low-speed cross-flow with the pressure single-hole nozzle. The shadow-graphy method was used for the cross-flow jet visualization. The experimental variables of liquid jet were nozzle diameter $(0.3mm{\sim}1.0mm)$, injection pressure $(50kPa{\sim}150kPa)$, and the velocity of cross-flow $(27m/s{\sim}42m/s)$. The highest penetration trajectories of liquid jet are governed by the momentum ratio $({\rho}_{\iota}U_{\iota}^2/{\rho}_aU_{cross}^2)$ rather than the Weber number and the new empirical equations of the highest penetration trajectory and breakup point at low-speed corss-flow are established.

  • We proposed an auto-tuning method of learning rate for performance improvement of backpropagation algorithm. Proposed method is used a fuzzy logic system for automatic tuning of learning rate. Instead of choosing a fixed learning rate, the fuzzy logic system is used to dynamically adjust learning rate. The inputs of fuzzy logic system are ${\Delta}$ and $\bar{{\Delta}}$, and the output is the learning rate. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, we performed simulations on a N-parity problem, function approximation, and Arabic numerals classification. The results show that the proposed method has considerably improved the performance compared to the backpropagation, the backpropagation with momentum, and the Jacobs' delta-bar-delta.

  • When a body enters waters, its original kinetic energy or momentum is distributed among the body and surrounding water in the form of added mass. Due to the transfer of the energy or momentum, the bode is subjected to the hydrodynamic impact forces and acceleration. This impact behavior can be an important criterion of submersible vehicle launched to the air. In this paper, based on Life-boat model, an approximate method is proposed for the evaluation of the forces and responses of cylindrical rigid bode by water entry impact. The impact forces are calculated by yon Karman's momentum theory and motion responses the body, especially acceleration, are calculated by a numerical integration of the motion equations derived by hydrodynamic force equilibrium. The proposed method is expected to be a simple but efficient tool lot the preliminary design or motion analysis of a body subjected to water entry impact.

  • The characteristics of on-chip spiral rectangular inductors in CMOS process are investigated through the simulation and experiment. The ADS-momentum is used for EM simulation, and the spiral inductors are fabricated with Hynix 0.35㎛ CMOS process. This research mainly concerned the effects of the geometric change in terms of the number of turns and the width of micro strip line. The measured and simulated results show that the Hynix 0.35㎛ process could support a top metal spiral inductor of 1nH to 6nH with Q-factor less than 5.

  • In order to verify the performance of upper stage propulsion system designed to operate in the upper atmosphere, test facility which can simulate high altitude is needed. Cylindrical supersonic exhaust diffuser, which utilizes the momentum of exhaust gas, provides a simple means for providing a low pressure around the propulsion system. This paper describes sub-systems and specification of high altitude test facility developed for the test of KSLV-I kick motor. Performance of the facility has been successfully verified through five times of hot firing tests.
