The experimental and numerical investigations on the failure characteristics of the secondary bonded composite single-lap joints were performed. The initiations and growths of cracks were observed using CCD camera and acoustic emission sensor during the tension tests of the joint specimens. The structural behaviors of the specimens were predicted by the geometric nonlinear two-dimensional finite element analysis. The three types of observed initial cracks were included in each finite element models and the strain energy release rates of each specimen models were calculated by VCCT(Virtual Crack Closure Technique) technique. The tension tests showed that the initial cracks occurred in the 60∼90% of final failure loads and the major failure modes of the specimens were adhesive failure and the delamination between the 1st and 2nd ply of laminate. The specimens with the thicker bondline had earlier crack initiation loads but higher crack propagation resistance and eventually better loading capability. The delaminations were mostly observed in the thicker bondline specimens. The mode I values of calculated strain energy release rates were higher than the mode II values in the all specimen models considering the three types of initial cracks. The mode I and total strain energy release rates were calculated as higher values in the order of initial crack in the edge interface, comer interface and delamination between the plies of laminate.

With Pb-free solder joints containing Sn-Ag-Cu-based ternary alloys (Sn-1.0 wt.%Ag-0.5Cu and Sn-4.0Ag-0.5Cu) and Sn-Ag-Cu-In-based quaternary alloys (Sn-1.0Ag-0.5Cu-1.0In, Sn-1.2Ag-0.5Cu-0.4In, Sn-1.2Ag-0.5Cu-0.6In, and Sn-1.2Ag-0.7Cu-0.4In), fracture-mode change, shear strengths, and fracture energies were observed and measured under a high-speed shear test of 500 mm/s. The samples in each composition were prepared with as-reflowed ones or solid-aged ones at $125^{\circ}C$ to 500 h. As a result, it was observed that ductile or quasi-ductile fracture modes occurs in the most of Sn-Ag-Cu-In samples. The happening frequency of a quasi-ductile fracture mode showed that the Sn-Ag-Cu-In joints possessed ductile fracture properties more than that of Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu in the high-speed shear condition. Moreover, the Sn-Ag-Cu-In joints presented averagely fracture energies similar to those of Sn-Ag-Cu joints. While maximum values in the fracture energies were measured after the solid aging for 100 h, clear decreases in the fracture energies were observed after the solid aging for 500 h. This result indicated that reliability degradation of the Sn-Ag-Cu-In solder joints might accelerate from about that time.

The paper is concerned with the analysis of laminated composite shell structures using an improved degenerated shell element. In the formulation of the element stiffness, the combined use of three different techniques was made. They are; 1) an enhanced interpolation of transverse shear strains in the natural coordinate system to overcome the shear locking problem; 2) the reduced integration technique in in-plane strains to avoid the membrane locking behavior; and 3) selective addition of the nonconforming displacement modes to improve the element performances. This element is free of serious shear/membrane locking problems and undesirable compatible/commutable spurious kinematic deformation modes. An incremental total Lagrangian formulation is presented which allows the calculation of arbitrarily large displacements. The resulting non-linear equilibrium equations are solved by the Newton-Raphson method. The versatility and accuracy of this improved degenerated shell element are demonstrated by solving several numerical examples.

The hole for the insertion of the pin in the shank is exist at ball joint connection of the space frame. It brings about the brittle fracture caused by stress concentration. Consequently it cannot expect the deformation performance or energy absorption performance from ball joint connection. In this study we developed a new connection details which will increase the plastic deformation performance at ball joint connection and can absorb the error in construction, which expect the plastic deformation performance at the reduced shank without brittle fracture at the screw of bolt and pin. Also it's capacity is verified by the performance in numerical analysis and test. We confirmed bolt's plastic deformantion performance through controled shank and pin's area.

In this study, a new 4-node general shell element with 6 DOFs per node is presented. Drilling rotational degrees of freedom are introduced by the variational principle with an independent rotation field. In formulation of the element, substitute transverse shear strain fields are used to avoid shear locking, while four nonconforming modes are applied in the in-plane displacement fields as a remedy for membrane locking. In addition, a direct modification method for nonconforming modes is employed in the numerical implementation of nonconforming modes to represent constant strain states. A 9-points integration rule is adopted for volume integration in the computation of the element stiffness matrix. With the combined use of these techniques, the developed shell element has no spurious zero energy modes, and can represent a constant strain state. Several numerical tests are carried out to evaluate the performance of the new element developed. The test results show that the behavior of the elements is satisfactory.

The noise of a compressor is a major contributor to overall noise radiated from the refrigerator. The major source of the noise is radiated by the vibration of the compressor shell. In this study, to identify the dynamic characteristics of compressor shell, a compressor shell is divided into several components and these are analyzed with a commercial FEM(Finite Element Method) package such as MSC/NASTRAN. Using substructure synthesis method, the dynamic characteristics of the total system is identified. The coherence of each component to the total system is computed by using strain and kinetic energy. To increase the frequency of the first resonance mode which is most effective mode to the noise of the compressor shell, the improving strategy of dynamic characteristics is suggested by changing mass and stiffness of the coherence component to the first mode.
This paper summarizes a study on the application of viscoelastic dampers as an energy dissipation device in the frame structure. It can be concluded that, even at high temperatures, the viscoelastically damped structure can achieve a significant reduction of structural response as compared to the case with no dampers added. Empirical formulae for estimating the dynamic properties of the viscoelastic damper are established based on the regression analysis using data obtained from component tests of the damper. The structural damping with added dampers can be satisfactorily estimated by the modal strain energy method and the derived empirical formulae. Numerical simulations using conventional modal analysis methods are also carried out to predict the dynamic response of viscoelastically damped structures under seismic excitations. Comparison between numerical simulations and test results shows very good agreement. Based on the above studies, a design procedure for viscoelastically damped structures is present . This design procedure fits naturally into the conventional structural design flow-chart by including damping ratio an additional design parameter.
This paper summarizes an experimental and analytical study on the application of viscoelastic dampers as energy dissipation devices in structural applications. Shaking table tests are carried out on the viscoelastically damped structure and the obtained structural responses are compared to those of the inelastic analysis results for the same test structure with no dampers added. It can be concluded the viscoelastic dampers are effective in reducing excessive vibrations of structures under strong earthquake ground motions. It is also observed that the increase in structure's stiffness by the addition of dampers can not contribute to improving the seismic response of a structure. In general. the reduction of the seismic response by adding the dampers to the structure is mostly resulted from the increased damping effect. It is found that the modal strain energy method can be used to reliably predict the equivalent structural damping. and the seismic response of a viscoelastically damped structure can be accurately estimated by conventional modal analysis techniques.

A model for analysis of the crushing mechanism of thin-walled rectangular tube is presented. The crushing modes of rectangular tubes may be characterized as either compact or noncompact and the model presented only considers compact modes. The unloading process in the crushing are categorized into three different stages where the distinction is based on the ratio of outward to inward fold length. Using the kinematic relations and the energy conservation principle, the instantaneous crush load is derived. An approximate equation that considers the rolling behavior is also given so that the crush load history may be established. The equation is experimentally proved.
