  • This paper presents a design of magnetorheological (MR) damper for control vibration of washing machine. This design is based on the requirements such as small dimensions with high damping force, and minimal consumed energy. The MR damper is designed using the shear mode of MR fluid, and Bingham plastic model is used for optimization process. In this design, a multi-coil design is adopted for damper to enhance damping force and reduce optimally structural parts. In optimization process, ADPL (Ansys Parametric Design Language) program is applied. Base on the optimal parameters, MR damper is manufactured and tested. In evaluation of MR damper, a modified sliding mode control is formulated and applied in both simulation and experiment. Results of experiment show that the MR damper satisfy the requirement of damping force for vibration control of washing machine.

  • The slosh natural frequencies, damping ratio, slosh mass and slosh force applying point of the liquid in cylindrical tank are estimated using the nonlinear least squares method in time domain. The estimated slosh model parameters are in good agreement with the results of the theoretical calculations for various liquid depths. Furthermore, this methodology will be applied to predict the sloshing parameters for a liquid propellant tank using ground experimental test-bed.

  • This paper presents the field-dependent Bingham characteristics and damping force control of an electro-rheological (ER) fluid under squeeze mode operation. The squeeze force of the ER fluid due to the imposed electric field is analyzed and an appropriate size of the disk-type electrode is devised. On the basis of the theoretical model of the ER fluid under squeeze mode operation, the yield stress and response speed of the ER fluid are distilled from the time responses of squeeze force to the step electric potentials. Measured squeeze forces under various excitation conditions are compared with the predicted ones from Bingham model and time constant obtained at the transient response test. In addition, the controllability of the field-dependent damping force of the ER fluid under squeeze mode is experimentally demonstrated by implementing simple PID controller.

  • This research investigates the characteristicsw of NRRO in a 2.5" HDD by using FEM, modal testing and runout analysis, and reduces NRRO using visco-elastic damping material. Most frequency components of NRRO are generated by the defects of ball and rotating race, and they can be determined by the kinematic analysis of ball bearing. It also proposes the novel design of a spindle motor that can reduce NRRO effectively by inserting the visco-elastic damping material to one of the transmission path of NRRO, i.e., where the strain energy is highly concentrate. By this technique, NRRO is reduced by 27%. 27%.

  • A simple technique to decouple the modal equations of motion of a linear nonclassically damped system is to neglect the off-diagonal elements of the modal damping matrix. This is called the decoupling approximation. It has generally been conceived that smallness of off-diagonal elements relative to the diagonal ones would validate its use. In this study, the relationship between elements of the modal damping matrix and the error arising from the decoupling approximation is explored. It is shown that the enhanced diagonal dominance of the modal damping matrix need not diminish the error. In fact, the error may even increase. Moreover, the error is found to be strongly dependent on the exitation. Therefore, within the practical range of engineering applications, diagonal dominance of the modal damping matrix would not be sufficient to supress the effect of modal coupling.

  • Interior parts of a vehicle are getting important to reduce interior noise. Therefore, prior analysis of cabin noise related with interior parts are necessary at first design stage. Recently, Statistical Energy Analysis(SEA) has been suggested as a possible way for high frequency range noise analysis of interior parts. The validity of noise analysis with SEA to interior parts has been preyed by comparing with experimental result, and the developed method with SEA has been applied in finding optimized interior parts package.

  • For the high center of gravity vehicles the roll stiffness of their suspensions is arranged to be very high because such vehicles are in some danger of tipping over in cornering. In some cases, the effective roll stiffness is determined significantly by the compliance of the tires because of the very stiff anti-roll members incorporated in the suspension. In such cases, it is clear that the shock absorbers which may be effective in damping heave oscillations have little effect on roll oscillations. Therefore, wind gusts and roadway unevenness may cause large swaying oscillations. In this paper, to improve the stability for the high center of gravity vehicles a control scheme to augment the damping of the roll mode is proposed. As the feedback signals needed to provide damping of the roll motion, the front or rear steer angles or both are chosen because they are very related to roll motion. The scheme is effective from moderate to high speeds and stabilizes the roll mode without introducing disturbance moments from roadway unevenness as shock absorbers do. The validity on the proposed method is verified through the computer simulation.

  • This paper addresses a sliding mode control of vibration in a flexible structure using ER(electro-rheological) dampers. A clamped-clamped flexible structure system supported by two short columns is considered. Three ER dampers to be operated in shear mode are designed on the basis of Bingham model of the arabic gum-based ER fluid, and attached to the flexible beam structure. After deriving the governing equation of motion and associated boundary conditions, a sliding mode controller is formulated to effectively suppress the vibration of the beam structure caused by sinusoidal and random excitations. In the formulation of the controller, parameter variations such as natural frequency deviation are treated to take into account the robustness of control system. The effectiveness of the proposed control system is confirmed by both simulation and experimental results.

  • A robust position control using a sliding mode controller is adopted for the stable dynamic walking of the biped. For the biped robot that is modeled with 14 degrees of freedom rigid bodies using the method of the multibody dynamics, the joint angles for simulation are obtained by the velocity transformation matrix using the given Cartesian foot and trunk trajectories. Hertz force model and Hysteresis damping element which is used in explanation of the energy dissipation during contact with ground are used for modeling of the ground reactions during the simulation. By the obtained that forces which contains highly confused noise elements and the system modeling uncertainties of various kinds such as unmodeled dynamics and parameter inaccuracies, the biped system will be unstable. For that problems, we are adopting a nonlinear robust control using a sliding mode controller. Under the assumption that the esimation error on the unknown parameters is bounded by a given function, that controller provides a successful way to preserve stability and achieve good performance, despite the presence of strong modeling imprecisions or uncertainties.

  • This paper presents an optimal design of a magnetorheological(MR) fluid-based mount(MR mount) that can be used for to vibration control in diesel engines of ships. In this work, a mount that uses mixed-modes(squeeze mode, flow mode, and shear mode) is proposed and designed. To determine the actuating damping force of the MR mount required for efficient vibration control, the excitation force from a diesel engine is analyzed. In this analysis, a model of a V-type engine is considered. The relationship between the velocity and pressure of gas in terms of the torque acting on the piston is derived. Subsequently, by integrating the field-dependent rheological properties of commercially available MR fluid with the excitation force, the appropriate size of the MR mount is designed. In addition, to achieve the maximum actuating force under geometric constraints, design optimization is undertaken using the ANSYS parametric design language software. Through magnetic density analysis, optimal design parameters such as the bottom gap and radius of coil are determined.
