  • Image chain analysis of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite is one of the primary activities for satellite design because SAR image quality depends on spacecraft bus performance as well as SAR payload. Especially, satellite pointing and stability error make worst effect on the original SAR image quality which is implemented by SAR payload design. In this research, Image chain analysis S/W was developed in order to analyze the SAR image quality degradation due to satellite pointing and stability error. This S/W consists of orbit model, attitude control model, SAR payload model, clutter model, and SAR processor. SAR raw data, which includes total 25 point targets in the scene of $5km{\times}5km$ swath width, was generated and then processed for analysis. High resolution mode (spotlight), of which resolution is 1m, was applied. The results of image chain analysis show that radiometric accuracy is the most degraded due to the pointing error. Therefore, the successful design of attitude control subsystem in spacecraft bus for enhancing the pointing accuracy is most important for image quality.

  • Recurrent enhancements of relativistic electron events at geosynchronous orbit (GREEs) were observed in 2006. These GREE enhancements were associated with high-speed solar wind streams coming from the same coronal hole. For the first six months of 2006, the occurrence of GREEs has 27 day periodicity and the GREEs were enhanced with various flux levels. Several factors have been studied to be related to GREEs: (1) High speed stream, (2) Pc5 ULF wave activity, (3) Southward IMF Bz, (4) substorm occurrence, (5) Whistler mode chorus wave, and (6) Dynamic pressure. In this paper, we have examined the effectiveness about those parameters in selected periods.

  • This paper presents the results of test observations toward a point source, 4C39.25, for observation modes with various bandwidths and numbers of IF streams in order to examine a reliability of the Daejeon hardware correlator performance for correlating VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) data obtained with the several observation modes of the KVN (Korean VLBI Network). We used a DiFX software correlator (DiFX) as a reference, for investigating the output visibilities from the Daejeon corelator. It is found that the band shapes of the output visibilities from two correlators are similar to each other and the correlated flux density for each baseline obtained from the Daejeon hardware correlator is lower by 3 - 7% than that from the DiFX. The flux difference is attributed to the limitation of FPGA resources and the difference of fringe rotation algorithm of the Daejeon hardware correlator. The conversion factor, 0.93 ~ 0.97, is proposed for future correlation with the Daejeon hardware correlator.

  • Organic single crystal of p-toluene sulfonate(PTS) bulks and thin films were fabricated using a slow solution evaporation method. Third and fifth order nonlinear refractive indices, $n_2$and $n_3$, of PTS crystals at 1600 nm were determined by the Z-scan method and the multimode output of the PTS thin film waveguide was observed at 1350 nm. When the beam intensity is in 2-5 GW/$cm^2$, the nonlinear refractive indices are $n_{2}=6{\times}10^{-4}cm^{2}$/GW and $n_{3}=-7{\times}10^{-5}cm^{4}/GW^{2}$ and the two and three photon absorption coefficients are zero. When the beam intensity is in 5~16 GW/$cm^2$, the split-step fast Fourier transform beam propagation method simulation shows that the beam propagation in the PTS is distorted from the gaussian shape.

  • The structure of SpaceEye-1 developed by Satrec Initiative is designed to carry out various earth observation missions in harsh launch and orbit environments. This paper describes methodology of the structure design and analysis performed during the SpaceEye-1 development. The SpaceEye-1 structure is designed not only to endure the static/dynamic loads but also to protect a main payload and all other components under the launch environments. The structural design requirements were derived from the requirements of the launch vehicle, payload, and other subsystems from the initial development phase. Three-dimensional modeling process was used to verify geometric compatibility of the structure with the other subsystems, and finite element analysis was used to confirm whether the designed structure satisfied all the mechanical requirements derived from the launch vehicle and payload.

  • A nonlinear speed control of a PMSM using a sequential parameter auto-tuning algorithm for servo equipments is presented. The nonlinear control scheme gives an undesirable output performance under the mismatch of the system parameters and load conditions. Recently, to improve the performance, an adaptive linearization scheme, a sliding mode control and an observer-based technique have been reported. Although a good performance can be obtained, the performance is not satisfactory any more under specific conditions such as a large inertia variation, a fast speed transient or an increased sampling time. The simultaneous estimation of principal parameters giving a direct influence on speed dynamics is generally not simple. To overcome this problem, a a sequential parameter auto-tuning algorithm at start-up is proposed, where dominant parameters are estimated in a prescribed regular sequence based on the method that one parameter is estimated during each interval. The proposed scheme is implemented on a PMSM using DSP TMS320C31 and the effectiveness is verified through simulations and experiments.

  • We designed the $1.3/1.55\mum$ WDM directional coupler and its coupling length was calculated with the variation of the two waveguide's core separation and other variables by the Fourier transformed scalar wave equation. We deposited the PSG films for optical waveguide by low pressure chemical vapor deposition and fabricated the WDM coupler using the laser lithography and $CF_4/O_2$ reactive ion etching process. A V -groove which was made to support and fix the optical fiber is fabricated on Si substrate by chemical etching. The WDM coupler and the V-groove are connected using UV curing epoxy. We found that propagation mode of each port of WDM coupler is single mode and maximum extinction ratio between two out ports is 6 dB for $1.3.\mum$, and 12 dB for $1.55\mum$. /TEX>.

  • Bragg reflecting waveguide devices have been fabricated on a flexible polymer substrate utilizing a post lift-off process which could Provide excellent uniformity of grating Patterns on Plastic film. The 510 m Period Bragg grating pattern is made by two methods. In the first sample the grating is fabricated by exposing the laser interference pattern on a photoresist, and then it is inscribed by $O_2$ plasma etching. The grating pattern of the second sample is formed by a PDMS soft mold imprinting process. The selective adhesion property of SU-8 material for Au and Si surfaces is utilized to prepare a 100-mm thick plastic substrate. Single mode waveguide is fabricated on the plastic substrate using polymer materials with refractive indices of 1.540 and 1.430 for the core and the cladding layers, respectively. The Bragg grating on Plastic substrate does not show any degradation in its spectral response compared to the reference sample made on a silicon wafer.

  • In this paper, we deal with to survey a narrow band ISDN transmission capability through the local subscriber line in Korea. First, we disscuss international activity trends of technical references required for a narrow band ISDN services using existing pair cables. Second, we have measured transmission characteristics to send digital signals at 144kbps ratio through the local subscriber line With this result, we have found that 3.6% of measured lines are not availlable for a narow band ISDN channel, obtained a conclusion that the input level of U-transceiver should be more than -31dBm so as to assure the sufficient digital transmission quality. We also know that majority noise cased by transmission error are due to impulsive noise and near end crosstalk. Fianlly. as a result of the BER measruement, it is observed that, within 2.5km, more than 70% of measured cables are satisfied with the reference quality.

  • Based on a substrate integrated waveguide(SIW) and a complementary split ring resonator(CSRR), electrically small antennas are proposed in this paper. Antenna's electrical size is reduced by introducing both CSRR and the eighth-mode substrate integrated waveguide(EMSIW). The EMSIW occupies only 12.5 % of the conventional SIW at the same dominant resonant frequency. In addition, the resonant frequency of the antenna is varied by rotating the CSRR on the EMSIW while keeping the same radiation patterns. The resonant frequency is changed from 4.74 GHz to 5.07 GHz by varying orientation of the CSRR from 0 to 360 degree. Unidirectional radiation patterns are observed and the measured peak gains are from 4.50 to 5.92 dBi.
