Seismic design of modular structures is usually carried out under the assumption that their load-carrying mechanism is similar to that of traditional steel moment-resisting frames(SMRFs). However, the load carry mechanism of modular structures would be different with that of traditional SMRFs because of their overlapped structural elements and complicated details of connections for the assembly of the unit-modules. In this study, nonlinear static analyses of 3 and 5-story prototype modular structures have been carried out with four different analytical models, which are established in consideration for the effects of overlapped elements and the hysteretic behavior of connections. Prototype structures present different lateral stiffness and strength depending on the modeling of overlapped elements and the rotational behavior of connections. For modular structures designed under assumption that overlapped structural elements are fully composite each other and connections between unit-modules are fixed, their lateral strength and stiffness can be over-estimated. Furthermore, it is known from the analysis results that modular structures with more than 3-stories would possess relatively low overstrength compared to traditional SMRFs.

This paper introduces research on the hinge joint of modular structure joints using finite element analysis. The modular structure has a characteristic in that it is difficult to expect the integrity of columns and beams between unit modules because the construction is carried out such that the modules are stacked. However, the current modular design ignores these structural characteristics, considers the moment transmission for the lateral force, and analyzes it in the same manner as the existing steel structure. Moreover, to fasten the moment bonding, bolts are fastened outside and inside the module, resulting in an unreasonable situation in which the finish is added after assembly. To consider the characteristics that are difficult to expect, such as unity, a modular structure system using hinge joints was proposed. This paper proposed and reviewed the basic theory of joints by devising a modified scissors model that is modified from the scissors model used in other research to verify the transmission of load when changing from the existing moment junction to a hinge junction. Based on the basics, the results were verified by comparing them with Midas Gen, a structural analysis program. Additionally, the member strength and usability were reviewed by changing the modular structure designed as a moment joint to a hinge joint.

Modular structures are relatively lightweight compared to reinforced-concrete or steel structures. However, it is difficult to achieve structural integrity between the columns of unit modules in a modular structure, which causes undesirable effects on the lateral force resistance capacity against wind and earthquake loads. This is more prominent in modular structures whose overall heights are greater. Hence, a post-tensioned modular structural system is proposed herein to improve the lateral force resistance capacity of a typical modular structure. A post-tensioned column-base connection, which is the main component of the proposed modular structural system, is configured with shapes and characteristics that allow inducing self-centering behaviors. Finite element analysis was then performed to investigate the hysteretic behaviors of the post-tensioned column-base connection. The analysis results show that the hysteretic behaviors are significantly affected by the initial tension forces and beam-column connection details at the base.

Modular system can be divided into two types based on the methods of resisting load. The one is the open-sided modular system composed of beams and columns. The other is the enclosed modular system composed of panels and studs. Of the Modular systems, the use of open-sided modular system is limited because it consists of closed member sections. In order to solve this problem, Choi et al.(2017) proposed a composite modular system with folded steel members filled with concrete. However, it was assumed in the previous study that the connections between modules are composed of rigid joint. Therefore it didn't identify the effect of connection behavior in structure. This study used finite element analysis to calculate stiffness of the connections in the proposed modular system. The linearization method presented in FEMA 440 is used for seismic performance assessment of structures, considering the connection stiffness computed in this study. The result of analysis shows that the capacity and story drift ratio obtained in the model considering stiffness of connection are less than those in the model not considering connection stiffness. Based on this observation, it is concluded that the stiffness of connection has a considerable effect on structural behavior.

At present, the actual condition is that Korean modular structures are limited to a low rise detached house and military barracks. And there is no standardized structural design method of stacked modular structure. Accordingly, in general, they don't review impact force in the stage of stacking and installing a module, the effect which wind load has on a structure in the stage of lifting, and inertial force occurring in the stage of lifting or transporting a module in the process of constructing a structure. Therefore, this study investigated the construction method of modular system to be studied in stages, and decided on the position to which load was applied and boundary condition in structural analysis at each construction stage. Besides, inertial force according to each speed was calculated in the lifting and wheeled transport of module. And we calculated impact load according to lifting speed in module stacking and installation work and wind load due to instantaneous wind speed in the installation work by lifting. On the basis of the suggested method, in the modular system to be studied, it carried out review of structure by changing determining conditions of load being applied by construction stage, such as in the stage of lifting, in the stage of transport, and in the stage of installation, and drew construction conditions securing stability structurally.
Modular house is built by assembling various joints. Module assembly in the stage of on-site installation is very important process, because assembly process directly affects the structural stability and the quality. However, manual tools and electric-powered tools have a problem in that assembly productivity and quality are reduced during long-time usage. Although pneumatic assembly tools for modular house have been developed, but empirical analysis to compare and evaluate the performance of tools has not been sufficient. This study compares and analyzes the assembly quality and productivity by applying existing assembly tools and new pneumatic tools to the field. The analysis results show that pneumatic assembly tools are more excellent in terms of assembly productivity and quality.

Modular structural systems have been used increasingly for low- and mid-rise structures such as school and apartment buildings. Studies have recently been conducted on the application of the modular structural system to high-rise buildings. To provide sufficient resistances and economical construction for the high-rise modular structural system, a composite unit modular structure was proposed. In this study, the strength of the non-symmetric composite column for the proposed composite unit modular structure was investigated through a series of tests. The experimental study focused on the effect of the slenderness of the column, eccentricity, and through bars on the strength of such a column. Design equations for the non-symmetric column for a modular unit structure were also proposed. From the results, it was found that the proposed design equations provide reasonable strength prediction of the non-symmetric composite column for the modular unit structure.

The use of modular buildings is increasing because of various advantages of modular buildings. But there are limits to apply modular buildings to medium-rise buildings because the building law provides only the specification criteria of the modular building with respect to the 1 hour fire resistance performance. This study was conducted to investigate 2 hours fire resistance performance of load bearing walls with steel studs in modular buildings by KS F 2257-1 and KS F 2257-4. After full scale tests, load bearing walls ensuring two hours fire resistance performance consist of at least 2 layers of fire resistance plaster boards of 19mm thickness or 3 layer of fire resistance plaster boards of thickness.
