  • In this study, a new 4-node general shell element with 6 DOFs per node is presented. Drilling rotational degrees of freedom are introduced by the variational principle with an independent rotation field. In formulation of the element, substitute transverse shear strain fields are used to avoid shear locking, while four nonconforming modes are applied in the in-plane displacement fields as a remedy for membrane locking. In addition, a direct modification method for nonconforming modes is employed in the numerical implementation of nonconforming modes to represent constant strain states. A 9-points integration rule is adopted for volume integration in the computation of the element stiffness matrix. With the combined use of these techniques, the developed shell element has no spurious zero energy modes, and can represent a constant strain state. Several numerical tests are carried out to evaluate the performance of the new element developed. The test results show that the behavior of the elements is satisfactory.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to present both fundamental and some higher natural frequencies of catenary arcs. The differential equations governing planar free vibrations for these arcs are derived, in which the rotatory inertia is included, as non-dimensional forms and solved numerically to obtain frequencies and mode shapes. The hinged-hinged and clamped-clamped end constraints are applied in numerical examples. The lowest four natural frequencies are reported as the functions of non -dimensional system parameters; the slenderness ratio and the rise to span length ratio. The effects of rotatory inertia on natural frequencies are reported and some typical mode shapes are also presented.

  • The differential equations governing free, in-plane vibrations of linearly elastic circular arches with rotationally flexible supports, including the effects of rotatory inertia, shear deformation and axial deformation, are solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. The lowest four natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes are obtained over a range of non-dimensional system parameters: the subtended angle, the slenderness ratio, and the rotational spring stiffness.

  • This paper deals with in-plane free vibrations of the horseshoe circular arch. Simultaneous ordinary differential equations governing free vibration of the arch are derived with respect to the radial and tangential deformations. Particularly, differential equations are obtained under the arc length coordinate rather than the angular one in order to extend the horseshoe arch whose subtended angle is greater than ${\pi}$ radians. The differential equations are numerically solved for calculating the natural frequencies accompanying with the corresponding mode shapes. In parametric studies, effects of the rotatory inertia, slenderness ratio and circumferential arc length ratio on frequency parameters are extensively discussed.

  • This paper deals with the free, in-plane vibrations of curved members with the translational(radial and tangential directions) and rotational springs at the ends. The governing differential equations for the circular curved member are solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. The lowest three natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes are obtained over a range of non-dimensional system parameters: the subtended angle, the slenderness ratio, the translational spring stiffness, and the rotational spring stiffness.

  • We develop a new four-node flat shell element which is accurate, efficient, and suitable to be used on general purpose. The new element has a hybrid Trefftz element with drilling degrees of freedom as a membrane part. We define the two independent displacement field: the internal displacement field that satisfies governing equations in the domain a priori and the boundary displacement field that is usually used as a conventional finite element method. The hybrid Trefftz variational formulation connects these two displacement fields on the boundary of the domain. To add drilling degrees of freedom, we introduce the Allman's quadratic displacement field to the boundary displacement field. As a result, our flat shell element has 6 degrees of freedom per a node. We also use the well-known DKMQ plate bending element for the plate part of the proposed element. The DKMQ element satisfies Mindlin-Reissner‘s plate theory along the edge of the element and gives proper behavior regardless of the thickness. A series of numerical experiments shows that the performance of the new element such as accuracy, rate of convergence, robustness to mesh quality, and so on.

  • Based on a variational principle of the consistent shear deformable discrete laminate theory derived in the companion paper Part I, a finite element procedure for the vibration analysis of laminated composite plates is presented. The present formulation takes the in-plane displacements of an arbitrary layer, the rotations of the cross section of each layer and transverse displacement of the plate as the state variables at a nodal point of finite element, resulting in total nodal degree of freedom of 2(n+l) +1 for the n-layered laminate. Thus, it allows to specify displacement boundary conditions of layer stretching and/or rotation of layer cross sections around the plate edge and/or lateral displacement. The developed procedure is applied to the free vibration problem for sandwich-type hybrid laminates composed of layers with drastically different material properties whose elasticity solutions are known. Comparison of analysis results with other FEM solutions showed that the present formulation yields better accuracy.

  • A three node triangular element with drilling rotations incorporating improved higher-order zig-zag theory(HZZT) is developed to accurately assess the stress distribution through thickness of the laminated plate and analyze the vibration of pretwisted composite plates with embedded damping layer. Shear force matching conditions are enforced along the interfaces between the embedded damping patch and the border patch. The natural frequencies and model loss factors are calculated for cantilevered pretwisted composite blade with damping core with the present triangular element, and compared to experiments and MSC/NASTRAN using a layered combination of plate and solid elements.

  • This study deals with behavior characteristics of laminated composite folded structures according to ratio of folded length based on a higher-order shear deformation theory. Well-known mixed finite element method using Lagrangian and Hermite shape interpolation functions is a little complex and have some difficulties applying to a triangular element. However, a higher-order shear deformation theory using only Lagrangian shape interpolation functions avoids those problems. In this paper, a drilling degree of freedom is appended for more accurate analysis and computational simplicity of folded plates. There are ten degrees of freedom per node, and four nodes per element. Journal on folded plates for effects of length variations is not expressed. Many results in this study are carried out according to ratio of folded length. The rational design is possible through analyses of complex and unpredictable laminated composite folded structures.
