  • One-phase method to prevent the initial formation of Ag(I) thiolate layered materal from the mixture of $AgNO_3$ and thiols was previously developed to generate TP (Thiolate-Protected)-nanosilver. In this modified method, $AgNO_3$ is added to the mixtures of $NaBH_4$ and thiols in ethanol. This method was so successful that it was applied to synthesize TP-nanogold and nanoplatinum. The synthesis and characterization of these nanoparticles by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectra, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) pictures, X-ray powder differaction (XRD) patterns and infrared(IR) spectra are described. The results show that colloidal nanoparticles are spherical or oval shape and the mean sizes for TP-nanogold and nanoplatinum are about 3~7 nm and below 2 nm, respectively. The conformation of polymethylene [$-(CH_2)_7-$] sequence in octanethiolate attached to nanogold was elucidated as trans.

  • Dimethyl terephthalate (DMT). 1.4-butanediol (1.4-BD) and poly (tetramethylene ether) glycol (PTMG) in the molecular weight of 2000 (g/mol) were used to synthesize poly(ether-b-ester) thermoplastic elastomers (TPEEs). The final copolymers were annealed to improve thermal stability at elevated temperatures and mechanical properties. This study showed that as the proportion of soft segment increases melting temperature and degree of crystallinity of TPEEs decrease constantly. In case of mechanical properties like flexural strength and flexural elastic modulus. $35-PTMG^{2000}$ indicates the highest values due to more efficient physical interlock.

  • The thermal and optical properties of cellulose tri(cholesteryloxy) carbonate(CCE0) and cellulose tri(cholesteryloxycarbonyl)alkanoates (CCEn, n=$2{\sim}8$, 10, the number of methylene units in the spacer) were investigated. CCE0 formed an enantiotropic cholesteric phase, whereas all the CCEn exhibited monotropic cholesteric phases. CCEn with n=$3{\sim}8$ formed cholesteric phases with left-handed helical structures whose optical pitches (${\lambda}_m's$) decrease with increasing temperature. On the other hand, CCE0 and CCEn with n=2 or 10 did not display reflection colors over the full cholesteric range, suggesting that the helical twisting power of the cholesteryl group highly depends on the length of the spacer connecting the cholesteryl group to the main chain. The thermal stability and degree of order in the mesophase and the temperature dependence of the ${\lambda}_m$ observed for CCEn highly depended on n. The results were discussed in terms of the differences in the internal plasticization, the arrangement of the side groups, and the conformation of the molecules.

  • The thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior of the homologous series of combined-type liquid crystalline polymers, tri-O-{4-(4'-cyanophenylazo)phenoxy}alkyl celluloses (CACETn, where n, the number of methylene units in the spacer, is 2~10) have been investigated. The CACETn with n of 5 and 7 exhibited enantiotropic nematic phases, while other polymers showed monotropic nematic phases. The isotropic-nematic transition temperature($T_{iN}$) increased when n is increased up to 4, but it decreased with increasing n more than 5. The entropy change at $T_{iN}$ also reaches a minimum at n=5, before it increases again for n=6. The sharp change at n=5 may be attributed to the difference in arrangement in the side groups. The nematic-crystalline transition temperatures, in contrast with $T_{iNS}$, exhibited a distinct odd-even effect, suggesting that the average shape of the side chains in the crystalline phase is different from that in the nematic phase. The mesophase properties of CACETn were significantly different from those reported for tri-O-alkyl celluloses and poly[1-{4-(4'-cyanophenylazo)phenoxyalkyloxy}ethylene]s. The results were discussed in terms of the difference in the chemical structures of the main and side chains and the number of the mesogenic units per repeating unit.

  • Thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior of a homologous series of penta-O-4-{4'-(cyanophenylazo)phenoxy}alkyl-D-glucopyranoses(CAGETn, n = 2~10, the number of methylene units in the spacer) has been investigated. The CAGETn with n of 2 and 7 exhibited enantiotropic nematic phases whereas other derivatives showed monotropic nematic phases. This is the first report of glucose derivatives that form thermotropic nematic phases. The isotropic-nematic transition temperatures ($T_{iNS}$) of CAGETns and their entropy variation at $T_{iN}$ showed the odd-even effect as a function of n. This behavior was rationalized in terms of the change in the average shape of the side chains as the parity of the spacer is varied. This rationalization also accounts for the observed variation of nematic-crystalline phase transition temperatures ($T_{NkS}$) and associoated entropy change at $T_{Nk}$. The entropy change at $T_{iN}$ or $T_{Nk}$ reaches a mininum at n = 3, before it increases again for n = 4. This may be attributed to the difference in the arrangement of the side groups. The mesophase properties of CAGETns were entirely different from those reported for partially or fully alkylated glucopyranoses. This result suggests that the degree of substitution and chemical structure of the substituents play an important role in the formation of the mesophase structures in the liquid crystals.

  • The thermal and optical properties of glucose penta(cholesteryloxycarbonyl)alkanoates (CAGLn, n = 2~8, 10, the number of methylene units in the spacer) were investigated. All the CAGLn formed monotropic cholesteric phases with left-handed helical structures. CAGLn with n = 2 or 10, in contrast with CAGLn with $3{\leq}n{\leq}8$, did not display reflection colors over the full cholesteric range, suggesting that the helical twisting power of the cholesteryl group highly depends on the length of the spacer joining the cholesteryl group to the glucose chain. The isotropic-cholesteric transition point ($T_{ic}$) decreased with increasing n and showed no odd-even effect. The plot of transition entropy at $T_{ic}$ against n had a sharp negative inflection at n = 7. The optical pitches (${{\lambda}_m}^{\prime}$ s) of CAGLn with $3{\leq}n{\leq}8$ decreased with increasing temperature. However, the temperature dependence of the ${\lambda}_m$ of the derivatives exhibited pronounced dependence on n. The transitional properties and the temperature dependence of the ${\lambda}_m$ observed for CAGLn were discussed in terms of the differences in arrangement of the cholesteryl groups and the conformation of the molecules.

  • The thermal and optical properties of cellobiose octa(cholestryloxycarbonyl)alkanoates CCCBn, $n=2{\sim}8$,10, the number of methylene units in the spacer) were investigated. All the samples formed monotropic cholesteric phases with left-handed helical structures. CCBn with n=2 or 10, in contrast with CCBn with $3{\leq}n{\leq}8$, did not display reflection colors over the full cholesteric range, suggesting that the helical twisting power of the cholesteryl group highly depends on the length of the spacer connecting the cholesteryl group to the cellobiose chain. The isotropic-cholestropic transition ($T_{ic}$) and glass transition temperatures decreased with increasing n and showed no odd-even effect. The transition entropy at $T_{ic}$ increased with increasing n from 2 up 6, but at n=7 it drops significantly and then increased again with increasing n from 8 to 10. The sharp change at n=7 may be attributed to a difference in arrangement of the side groups. The thermal stability and degree of order in the mesophase and the temperature dependence of the optical pitch observed for CCBn were significantly different from those reported for the cellulose tri(cholesteryloxycarbonyl)alkanoates and glucose penta(cholesteryloxycarbonyl)alkanoates. The results were discussed in terms of the differences in the degree of polymerization, the number of the mesogenic units per mole-glucose unit, and the conformation of the molecules.

  • The thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior of the homologous series of cellulose tri[4-{4'-(nitrophenylazo) phenoxycarbonyl}] alkanoates (NACEn, n=2$\sim$8, 10, the number of methylene units in the spacer) have been investigated. All of the homologoues formed monotropic nematic phases. The isotropic-nematic transition temperature ($T_{iN}$) decreased when n is increased up to 7, but it became almost constant when n is more than 7. The plot of transition entropy at $T_{iN}$ against n had a sharp negative inflection at n=7. The sharp change at n=7 may be attributed to the difference in arrangement of the side groups. The melting temperature ($T_m$) and associated entropy change at $T_m$, in contrast with $T_{iN}$ and associated entropy change at $T_{iN}$, exhibited a distinct odd-even effect, suggesting that the average shape of the side chains in the crystalline phase is different from that in the nematic phase. The thermal stability and degree of order of the nematic phase observed for NACEn were significantly different from those reported for the homologous series of side-chain and combined type liquid crystal polymers bearing azobenzene or biphenyl units in the side chains. The results were discussed in terms of the differences in the chemical structure, the flexibility of the main chain, the mode of chemical linkage of the side group with the main chain, and the number of the mesogenic units per repeating unit.
