  • The purpose of this research was influenced by the historical background of Japanese modern architecture by the circulation of Kuma Kengo's architectural works and he wanted to look at the values and directions he was pursuing and how they were expressed in his works. The results of the review are summarized as follows. First, metabolism was developed as a reaction of modernism in modern architecture, focusing on growth through infinite reproduction by looking at architecture and cities as organisms and by using unit space as cells. Kuma Kengo, on the other hand, argues that focusing on the possibility of decimation of unit members by sequencing the elements that make up the space smaller than the unit space is closer to an ecological architecture. Second, what Kuma Kengo says is "erase the architecture" that is naturally related to the environment and disappears when its use is exhausted. His argument is expressed in individual architectural works through 'visual erase', 'particle painting of materials' and 'independence through dependency.' Through this, Kuma Kengo's ecological architectural languages were influenced by the ecological causes of metabolism, but they differed from the perspective of seeing architectural circulation as an organism. If metabolism was intended to realize circulation with growth potential based on the module of unit space, Kuma Kengo sought to implement circulation with the extinction of the unit members of space.

  • This study aims to research the Kisho Kurokawa's architectural concepts and expressions that are comprised of various and complex theories system for Korean's globalization of architecture. Kurokawa's architectural concepts are composed by Metabolism, Metamorphosis and Symbiosis. And intermediate zone, ambiguity, multivalence are theories that work as media in changing process levels to three main concepts and these are used as media of Metamorphosis which embody Symbiosis. Metabolism include concepts of Metamorphosis and Symbiosis. Symbiosis is comprise of concepts of Metabolism and Metamorphosis, and is a ultimate goal of these three main concepts. Metamorphosis works as a medium in changing process levels from Metabolism to Symbiosis. The architectural expressions are embodied according to these main three concepts and theories of media in changing process levels. And these architectural expressions are analyzed by three elements as follows: form, material & color, structure & technique.

  • The Contemporary paradigm to understand the complexity and diversity is moving to 'Becoming' that taken place in reviewing at the relation of various concepts. In Japan, After the collapse of modern architecture has been declared 'Metabolism' was appeared. They tried to apply organism's metabolic system to buildings based on ecological thoughts. But Metaboilsm's projects had revealed limitations of representation that the city on the mechanical system became a huge scale. As a result, It caused a break the cultural context of the region in Japan. After then, Japanese Architects expressed a pluralistic aspects of modern society for the restoration of disconnected cultural context. From this perspective, The thought of 'becoming' is a new role for Contemporary Japanese Architect. This research is focused of projects of SANAA, Ito Toyo, Sou Fujimoto, because they have spatial thought about realizing the space through the ways organizing the various potential possibilities in the simple external form not stimulated. They are realize the 'becoming-space' within the architecture. This 'becoming-space' gives people in building the new characteristics and experience that potential interactions among user, architecture and nature. It is non-representational space not fixed, but changing organically and variably.

  • The word 'Neo-Modern' means the revival of modernism, specially the concept of the White Geometry of Le corbusier and Mies van de Rohe, and the Neo-Modern movement in architecture indicates the leading aspects appeared in 1990's. Modern architecture was a formalistic art movement. With its historical roots, in Europe extending back to the avant- garde modern architecture in 1920's, Neo-Modern appeared with the name of New York Five, in 1970's. In Japan, there has been an outstanding movements presenting Modernism architectural charateristics, since 1980's. The characteristics of these works can be discerned from the those of Regionalism of Historicalism in 1980's. This study is to investigate and analyze the characteristics of the works of Japanese Neo-Modern architects and to contribute to defining the word, 'Neo-Modernism'. In chapter one, the background, purpose and methode of study are presented. In chapter two, the concept and historical background of 'Neo-Modernism' are studied. In chapter three, the characteristics of Neo-Modernism are studied on the basis of the main concepts and formal characteristics of modernism and New york Five. In chapter four, the tradition of Modernism inside the history of Japanese architecture were studied, specially focused on Metabolism. In chapter five, The characteristics of Neo-modern expressions used in the 18 exhibition and cultural facilities in Japan, established after 1980, are analyzed in terms of 4 expression categories. In chapter six, a synthetic conclusion is presented.
