  • To analysis on the degradation of the satellite communication signal due to Asian dust that was appeared on Korean peninsula during March and April 2004, EIRPs of L, S, C, Ku and Ka frequency band of the downlink of satellite communication link were measured by Satellite Signal Monitoring Center located in lcheon, Korea. The measured results were compared to the measurement values of PM10 and OPC that were measured by the Korea Meteorological Administration.

  • Light-scattering fine particulate matter monitors can measure particulate matter (PM) concentrations in every second and can be designed in a portable size. They can measure the concentrations of various PM sizes (PM1.0, PM2.5, PM4.0 and PM10) with a single sensor. They measure the number and size of particulate matters and convert them to weight per volume (concentration). These devices show a large error for asian dust. This paper proposes a scheme that compensates the PM2.5 concenstration error for asian dust by multiple linear regression machine learning in light-scattering PM monitors. This scheme can be effective with only two or three types of PM sizes. The experimental results compare a beta-ray PM monitor of national institute of environmental research and a light-scattering PM monitor during a month. The correlation coefficient (R2) of theses two devices was 0.927 without asian dust, but it was 0.763 due to asian dust during the entire experimental period and improved to 0.944 by the proposed machine learning.

  • To analysis on the degradation of the satellite communication signal due to Asian dust that appeared on Korean peninsula during March and April 2004, EIRPs of L, S, C, Ku and Ka frequency bands of the downlink of satellite communication link were measured by Satellite Signal Monitoring Center located in Icheon, Korea. The measured EIRP values were compared to the total dust density and dust particle distribution that were measured using PM 10 and OPC by the Korea Meteorological Administration, and the possible correlation between three sets data were analyzed.

  • We present linear particle depolarization ratio at 440, 675, 870, and 1020 nm retrieved from measurements with an AERONET sun/sky radiometer at the source region of Asian dust, Dunhuang. The linear particle depolarization ratios are retrieved at the two receptor sites (Gosan and Osaka). The highest linear particle depolarization ratio of 0.34 at 1020 nm is retrieved from nearly pure Asian dust. The linear particle depolarization ratio decreased as the volume concentration of fine-mode particle increased. We can confirm that the ratio of Asian dust is changed by the value of the linear particle depolarization ratio retrieved by AERONET data.

  • A geochemical technique based on rare earth element geochemistry was used to clarity the source of the Asian dust (Yellow sand) in the Daejeon area. The Asian dusts were collected 4 times during 31th March- 2nd April and 25th May-27th May 2007. The Yellow sand shows PAAS (Post Archean Australian Shale)-normalized REE pattern of the flattened LREE and slightly depleted LREE without Eu anomaly, whereas the Daejeon soil has slightly enriched LREE and depleted HREE with negative Eu anomaly. Our results show that REE patterns of the Asian dust are LREE-flattened similar to those of the sediment from the south-eastern part of Ordos desert. This suggests that Asian dust in the Daejeon area might be derived from the south-eastern part of Ordos desert.

  • The Yellow-Sand phenomena occurred during the period from l0C to 14C in Korea have been investigated using the historical record of the Koryosa. It is written as the "dust rain"or "mud" which means the falling down of dust from the sky. The authors have extracted 50 historical writings of dust rain from the Koryosa. The results show that the observation records concerning Yellow-Sand phenomenon for the period of Korea Dynasty (918~1392) are described with the scientific accuracy for the Yellow-Sand phenomena as the pure dust phenomena, the mixture of Yellow Sand with snow or rain, and the Yellow-Sand associated with fog or hail, etc. It is also found that the occurrence of Yellow-Sand phenomena was the incomprehensible natural phenomena such as Yellow-Sand were interpreted as a warning from the Heaven to the king and people of their fail in moral principles.in moral principles.
