A Study on Cold Tolerance of the Grape Cuttings at Different Locations and Dormant Periods (포도나무가지의 휴면 시기 및 지역별 저온 내성에 관하여)

  • This experiment was conducted to know tolerance to cold temperature of the grape shoots collected at different locations and dormant periods in 1996 to 1997. The results from this experiment were as follows; (1) There is a little difference among locations in their electric conductance of Campbell Early cultivar, in Dec. 1996. But the least damage was shown at Kyung Joo while severe at Young Dong district in Jan. 1997. (2) Electric conductance of Sheridan cultivar was showing the same tendency as Campbell Early. (3) Early dormant period(December) affected severe bud browning at Young Dong than that of January. The grape shoot collected at Kyung San and Kyung Joo Showed a little influence on bud browning during December and January. (4) Likewise, bark browning of the grape shoot collected at Young Dong showed the same tendency with bud browning test. (5) The bud of grape shoot was bursted even at $-20^{\circ}C$. But rate of bud bursting was lower at Young Dong than the other districts at $-15^{\circ}C$ and $-20^{\circ}C$. From these results, the authors believe that we must introduce and test for suitable cultivation area and temperature before selection of permanent cultivating location.

  • 장미과 식물로 정원수 와 조경수로 많이 식재되고 있는 명자나 무류로 명자꽃, 풀명자, 산당화는 봄날에 주홍색 계통의 꽃망울은 화려하지는 않지만 은은하고, 소박한 시골 아낙네 같은 청초한 느낌을 준다. 여름에는 모과 같이 짙은 향기와 함께 싱그러워서 장식용으로 사용되며 또한 과실주를 담그기도 한다. 맹아력이 강하고 수형을 마음대로 조절할 수가 있어 요즘 유형하는 수벽용 생울타리로 적격이다. 이러한 명자나무류에 피해를 주는 흡즙성해충으로 진딧물로, 깍지벌레류, 방패벌레가 피해를 주고 있어 이들에 대한 생태 및 방제법을 간략하게 소개하고자 한다.

Seed Dispersion and Seedling Spatial Distribution of the Tree of Heaven in Urban Environments (도시환경에서 가중나무 종자의 확산 및 발아 분포)

  • The tree of heaven naturalized plant grows in the various habitats of the city. The principal reason is that it is reproduced not only through sexual reproduction but through asexual reproduction. By the spreading of sucker and a bud appearance of the seed it forms a group easily inside the city habitat. The distribution of seed and spreading of the seedlings of the tree of heaven were investigated like the followings. As the result of the sexual reproduction by the seed and hangs in cluster farm, 350 individuals are germinated at the Namsan the best environment, and 50 individuals at Toegyewon Rotary These seeds are dispersed by the effect of wind and geographical factor. Because the northwest wind is blowing mainly from late autumn to early spring, it is dispersed in the south. In Toegyewon Rotary, a slant site, is dispersed mainly by down the site. Compared with width of crown, the seedling of a seed germination are distributed outside more than inside the crown and the seed is spreaded until the maximum 7.5 times of crown width at the investigated area. 1 year seedlings appeared as a group at the place of 2-4 times of the crown (in 20m from the crown, 75% distribution). Considering the distribution by the seed scattering of the tree of heaven, there is a possibility of sudden individual increase even in the deteriorated city environment. So this possibility shows that we need to consider the protection of the city soil, and the species variety decrease resulted from the successful competition to the other species.

  • The inheritance of isoenzymes in young coat tissues of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) was studied by electrophoretically analysing five parental clones and their full-sib progenies obtained by crossing one female clone to four male clones. The distal 2cm section of vigorous young roots of 70 seedlings per family were subjected to horizontal starch gel electrophoresis. The resulting gels were tested for activity of 7 enzyme systems. Evidences for the inheritance of isoenzymes observed indicated that the isoenzyme variants of every isoenzyme zone were under control of codominant alleles at a single locus. Chi-square test of joint segregation data of the two loci, 6-PGD-2 and PGI-2, indicated that the pair of loci was not linked.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the qualities of Saururus chinensis Baill. rhizomes and it content of active ingredient accenting to the storage methods. As the storage period increased the rates of weight loss, rotten rhizomes and the number of sprouts increased. Refrigerator storage resulted in the lowest weight reduction and sprouts rates, while storage in soil-filled box in a store-house was most effective in reducing spoilage rate. Five lignans from rhizome were determined by HPLC Retention time ranged $18{\sim}36$ minutes and showed saucernetin sauchinone, manassantin A, saucerneol D, and manassantin B in that order. Regardless of storage methods, the lignan content was lower after 120 days than after 30 days of storage, and increased manassantin B, manassantin A, saucernetin sauchinone, and saucerneol D in that order.

Vegetation Structure and Ecological Succession of Kojedo District, Hallyo-Haesang National Park (한려해상국립공원 거제도지구 산림군집구조 및 천이계열)

  • To study plant community structure and successional sere of the Kojedo District, Hallyo-Haesang National Park, fifty six plots were set up and surveyed(each plot $l00\m^2$). Fifty-six plots were classified into four community, Quercus variabilis-Zelkova serrata community(I), Q. variabilis-Cinnamomum japonicum-Neolitsea sericea community(II), Pinus thunbergii-C. japonicum-N. sericea community(III), P. thunbergii-P. densiflora community(IV) by TWINSPAN technique. Most area of forests in Kojedo district are artificial or coppice forest after artificial disturbance. The age of four community were about 35~40 years and the number of species 32~44 species per $600\m^2$. Ecological succession had been proceeded from deciduous broad-leaved species(Q. variabilis-Z. serrata etc.), P. thunbergii, P. densiflora to evergreen broad leaved forest(C. japonicum, N. sericea etc.).

Change in Glycoalkaloid of Potatoes during Storage (저장(貯藏)에 따른 감자의 Glycoalkaloid의 변화(變化))

  • The purpose of this report was to investigate change in glycoalkaloid content (${\alpha}-chaconine$, ${\alpha}-solanine$) which contained in the cortex and medulla part during storage of two varieties of potato, Irish Cobbler and May Queen at $1^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$. The tubers of both varities stored at $20^{\circ}C$ showed sprouting and ${\alpha}-chaconine$ and ${\alpha}-solanine$ contained in cortex part increased, particularly the extent of increase was more noticeable in May Queen than in Irish Cobbler. The content of glycoalkaloid in tubers stored at $1^{\circ}C$ also increased continuously. A small amount of ${\alpha}-chaconine$ was detected in the medulla part of both varieties, but ${\alpha}-solanine$ was not detected at all.

  • Effects of various dosages of gamma ray ranging from 0 to 16 krad on sprout inhibition and nutritive value of potato tubers were investigated with Irish Cobbler variety. Sprout growth was gradually suppressed with increasing dosage, and completely inhibited with 16 krad treatment. Under this optimum dosage, weight loss of tubers was markedly reduced and tubers kept firm throughout the 2 month storage period. Irradiation had no adverse effects on the cooking quality of potato tubers. Moisture content of stored potato tubers was shown to be in inverse proportion to sprout growth. Tubers treated with 16 krad tended to contain somewhat higher percentage of total carbohydrate than those treated with lower dosages. Significantly larger amounts of ascorbic acid were retained in 8 and 16 krad treatments than in 0 and 2 krad treatments.
