  • Until now, disposal of casting foundry fly ash generally depends on reclamation. This is the great loss from a point of view saving of resources and utilizing industrial wastes. Therefore, a study on the use of fly ash as a substitute material for construction is necessary in order to utilize industrial wastes, to reduce cost of production, to improve quality in producing concrete products, and to protect environment from pollution. In this study, concrete products(hollow concrete block and concrete brick) using casting foundry fly ash as a substitute materials for cement, are produced. And experiments are conducted based on Korean Industrial Standards. Finally, the used methods of casting foundry fly ash as a substitute materials in industry are presented.

  • In this paper, different RFID tag types compliant with UHF frequency based RFID system were chosen to build RFID tag embedded concrete blocks. Then, by placing the tags in systematically varied depths of a concrete block, we could measure the RF signal attenuation pattern as the performance indicator of a specific concrete embedded RFID system. Experiments show that the concrete mixing ratio makes no significant difference in tag detection performance level. The significance of the developed RFID system lies in its capability of eliminating GPS's error and shadow area as well as providing smart infrastructure for supporting truly pervasive ubiquitous computing applications especially in outdoor environment.

  • In this study, several concrete-block blast tests and AUTODYN numerical analyses were conducted to analyze the effects of different stemming and coupling materials on explosion results. Air, sand, and polymer gel were used as both the stemming and coupling materials. The stemming and coupling effects of these materials were compared with those of the full-charge condition. Soil-covered or buried concrete blocks were used for field crater tests. It was found from the concrete block tests and numerical analyses that both the crater size and the peak pressure around the blast hole were higher when the polymer gel was used than when the sand and the decoupling condition were used. The numerical analyses revealed the same trend as those of the field tests. Pressure peaks in concrete block models were calculated to be 37, 30, and 16 MPa, respectively, for the cases of the polymer gel, sand, and no stemming and decoupling condition. The pressure peak was 52 MPa in the case of full-charge condition, which was the highest pressure. But the damage area for the case was smaller than that obtained from the use of polymer gel. Full-charge was also used as a reference test.

  • A concrete embedded antenna design is proposed for probing the durability of a building at an industrial scientific medical band of 902~908 MHz. The proposed antenna is designed with a stacked slot patch structure for lower impedance variation to a dielectric constant of concrete, as a dielectric constant difference is derived from the moisture content. The proposed structure has a wider bandwidth when a parasitic patch structure is used, which reduces antenna performance degradation resulting from the moisture content of concrete. The measured voltage standing wave ratio of the proposed structure is less than 2 and the beam width is approximately $80^{\circ}$, whereas the gain is greater than 7 dBi. The proposed antenna is fabricated with a rectangle-type concrete block, which is simulated and measured for return loss and antenna gain.

  • In this study, an experimental study on storage media for thermal energy storage system was conducted. For thermal energy storage medium, concrete has excellent thermal and mechanical properties and also has various advantages due to its low cost. In addition, the ultra-high strength concrete reinforced by steel fibers exhibits excellent durability against exposure to high temperatures due to its high toughness and high strength characteristics. Moreover, the high thermal conductivity of steel fibers has an advantageous effect on heat storage and heat dissipation. Therefore, to investigate the temperature distribution characteristics of ultra-high-strength concrete, concrete blocks were fabricated and a heating test was performed by applying high-temperature thermal cycles. The heat transfer pipe was buried in the center of the concrete block for heat transfer by heat fluid flow. In order to explore the temperature distribution characteristics according to different shapes of the heat transfer pipe, a round pipe and a longitudinal fin pipe were used. The temperature distribution at the differnent thermal cycles were analyzed, and the thermal energy and the cumulated thermal energy over time were calculated and analyzed for comparison based on test results.

  • In this study, we examined the bond performance of FRP Hybrid Bars. FRP Hybrid Bars are developed by wrapping glass fibers on the outside of deformed steel rebars to solve the corrosion problem. The surface of the FRP Hybrid Bars was coated with resin and silica sand to enhance its adhesion bonding performance with concrete. Various parameters, such as the resin type, viscosity, and size of the silica sand, were selected in order to find the optimal surface condition of the FRP Hybrid Bars. For the bonding test, FRP Hybrid Bars were embedded in a concrete block with a size of 200 mm3 and the maximum load and slip were measured at the interface between the FRP Hybrid Bar and concrete through the pull-out test. From the experimental results, the maximum load and bond strength were calculated as a function of each experimental variable and the resin type, viscosity and size of the silica sand giving rise to the optimal bond performance were evaluated. The maximum bond strength of the specimen using epoxy resin and No. 5 silica sand was about 35% higher than that of the deformed rebar.
