  • This paper proposes a new approach that converts continuous-valued attributes to categorical-valued ones considering the distribution of target attributes(classes). In this approach, It can be possible to get optimal interval boundaries by considering the distribution of data itself without any requirements of parameters. For each attributes, the distribution of target attributes is projected to one-dimensional space. And this space is clustered according to the criteria like as the density value of each target attributes and the amount of overlapped areas among each density values of target attributes. Clusters which are made in this ways are based on the probabilities that can predict a target attribute of instances. Therefore it has an interval boundaries that minimize a loss of information of original data. An improved performance of proposed discretization method can be validated using C4.5 algorithm and UCI Machine Learning Data Repository data sets.

  • Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage(CCS) is regarded as one of the most promising options to response climate change. CCS is a three-stage process consisting of the capture of carbon dioxide($CO_2$), the transport of $CO_2$ to a storage location, and the long term isolation of $CO_2$ from the atmosphere for the purpose of carbon emission mitigation. Up to now, process design for this $CO_2$ marine geological storage has been carried out mainly on pure $CO_2$. Unfortunately the $CO_2$ mixture captured from the power plants and steel making plants contains many impurities such as $N_2$, $O_2$, Ar, $H_2O$, $SO_2$, $H_2S$. A small amount of impurities can change the thermodynamic properties and then significantly affect the compression, purification, transport and injection processes. In order to design a reliable $CO_2$ marine geological storage system, it is necessary to analyze the impact of these impurities on the whole CCS process at initial design stage. The purpose of the present paper is to compare and analyse the relevant physical property models including BWRS, PR, PRBM, RKS and SRK equations of state, and NRTL-RK model which are crucial numerical process simulation tools. To evaluate the predictive accuracy of the equation of the state for $CO_2-SO_2$ mixture, we compared numerical calculation results with reference experimental data. In addition, optimum binary parameter to consider the interaction of $CO_2$ and $SO_2$ molecules was suggested based on the mean absolute percent error. In conclusion, we suggest the most reliable physical property model with optimized binary parameter in designing the $CO_2-SO_2$ mixture marine geological storage process.

  • Ultimate load factors of PPWS(Prefabricated Parallel Wire Strand) sockets in main cables of suspension bridges are studied with respect to the tapered angles of the inner surface of sockets. After briefly reviewing the current design method, 15 numbers of finite element models of sockets are prepared by varying the number of wires in a strand and the tapered angles. The finite element models are updated by comparing experimental and numerical results, so that the models can reflect the real behavior of sockets. The stress distributions at the first yielding and ultimate states are analyzed by performing the incremental load analysis using ABAQUS. It is concluded that the optimized tapered angle of sockets should be determined at the specific angle between the results of verification equations of the required bonding length and stress resistance length.

  • Embedded software has requirements such as real-time and environment independency. The real-time requirement is affected from worst-case execution time of loaded tasks. Therefore, to guarantee real-time requirement, we need to determine a program's worst-case execution time using static analysis approach. However, the existing methods for worst-case execution time analysis do not consider the environment independency. Thus, in this paper, in order to provide environment independency, we propose a method for measuring task's execution time from the source codes. The proposed method measures the execution time through the control flow graph created from the source codes instead of the executable codes. However, the control flow graph created from the source code does not have information about execution time. Therefore, in order to provide this information, the proposed method identifies the relationships between statements in the source code and instructions in the executable code. By parameterizing those parts that are dependent on processors based on the relationships, it is possible to enhance the flexibility of the tool that measures the worst-case execution time.

  • This paper deals with how to design and develop white-box based e-learning contents which are equipped with conceptual understanding and step-by-step computational procedures for studying vector calculus for science-engineering majors who might need supplementary mathematics learning. Noting that rewriting rules are often used in school mathematics for students' problem solving, the theoretical aspects of rewriting rules are reviewed for developing supplementary e-learning contents for them. The software design of step-by-step problem solving requires careful arrangement of rewriting rules and pattern matching techniques for white-box procedures using a computer algebra system such as Mathematica. Several modules for step-by-step problem solving as well as producing dynamic display of e-learning contents was coded by Mathematica in order to find the length of a curve in vector calculus after implementing several rules for differentiation and integration. The developed contents are equipped with diagnostic modules and immediate feedback for supplementary learning in terms of a tutorial. At the end, this paper indicates the strengths and features of the developed contents for college students who need to increase math learning capabilities, and suggests future research directions.

  • In this paper, we describe the synthesis of robust and non-fragile $H^{\infty}$ state feedback controllers for linear systems with affine parameter uncertain tracking servo system of blu-ray disc drive, as well as static state feedback controller with polytopic uncertainty Similarity any other control system, the objective of the track-following system design for optical disc drives is to construct the system with better performance and robustness against modeling uncertainties and various disturbances. Also, the obtained condition can be rewritten as parameterized linear matrix inequalities(PLMIs), that is, LMIs whose coefficients are functions of a parameter confined to a compact set. We show that the resulting controller guarantees the asymptotic stability and disturbance attenuation of the closed loop system in spite of controller gain variations within a resulted polytopic region.

  • A three-way reversing valve, which provides rapid and accurate changes in the water flow direction without requiring any precise control device, is used in automotive washing machines to remove oil and dirt that remain on the machined engine and transmission blocks. Because of the complicated shape of the bottom-plug, however, cavitation occurs in the plug. In this study, the cavitation index and POC (percent of cavitation) were used to quantitatively evaluate the cavitation effect occurring in the bottom-plug on the downstream side. An optimal shape design was conducted via parametric study with a simple CAE model to avoid time-consuming CFD analysis and hard-to-achieve convergence. To verify the results of the numerical analysis, a flow visualization test was conducted using a specimen prepared according to ISA-RP75.23. In this test, the flow characteristics, such as cavitation occurring on the downstream side, were investigated using flow test equipment that included a valve, pump, flow control system, and high-speed camera.

  • This paper outlines a new approach to the line generalization when preparing small scale map on the basis of existing large scale digital map. Line generalizations are conducted based on Douglas algorithm using 1/25,000 scale topographic maps of southeastern JEJU island which produced by National Geographic Institute to analyze the fitness to the original and problems of graphical representation. Compare to the same scale map which was generated by manual method, a verity of small, but sometimes significant errors & modification of topological relationship have been detected. The research gives full details of three algorithms that operationalize the smallest visible object method, together with some empirical results. A comparison of the results produced by the new algorithms with those produced by manual generalization and Douglas method of data reduction is provided. Also this paper presents the preliminary results of an relationships between the size of smallest visual object and requiring data storages for each algorithms.

  • The holistic inversion approach for frequency domain airborne electromagnetic data has previously been employed to simultaneously calibrate, process and invert raw frequency-domain data where prior information was available. Analternative formulation has been developed, which is suitable in the case where explicit prior information is not available. It incorporates: a multi-layer vertically-smooth conductivity model; a simplified bias parameterisation; horizontal smoothing with respect to elevation; and cluster computer parallelisation. Without using any prior data, an inversion of 8.0 million data for 3.4 million parameters yields results that are consistent with independently derived calibration parameters, downhole logs and groundwater elevation data. We conclude that the success of the holistic inversion method is not dependent on a sophisticated conceptual model or the direct inclusion of survey-area specific prior information. In addition, acquisition costs could potentially be reduced by employing the holistic approach which largely eliminates the need for high altitude zero-level measurements.
