  • A study on the recovery of lithium and leaching behavior of NCM powder by hydrogen reduction for NCM system Li-ion battery scraps was investigated. The reductive rate was about 93% at $800^{\circ}C$ by hydrogen treatment. The lithium carbonate with 99% purity was manufactured by using $CO_2$ gas and washing method with water for NCM powder after hydrogen reduction. As a result of comparing the powders before and after the hydrogen reduction treatment for acid leaching behavior we obtained 32% enhanced leaching rate of cobalt, 45% enhanced leaching rate of nickel and the 90% leaching effect for manganese by hydrogen reduction at 2M $H_2SO_4$ concentration condition.

  • A study on the recovery of lithium and leaching behavior of NCM powder by carbon reduction for NCM-system Li-ion battery scraps was conducted. First of all, the oxide powders of NCM-system with layer structure were decomposed by carbon, lithium was converted to lithium carbonate by carbon reaction at above $600^{\circ}C$. The lithium carbonate powders with 99% purity were manufactured by washing method with water and concentration process for NCM powder after carbon reduction. The reaction yield was approximately 88% at $800^{\circ}C$ by carbon reduction. At this time, leaching efficiency at 2M sulfuric acid concentration was over 99% for cobalt, nickel and manganese.

  • The smelting reduction of spent lithium-ion batteries results in metallic alloys containing Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Si. A process to separate metal ions from the sulfuric acid leaching solution of these metallic alloys has been reported. In this process, ionic liquids are employed to separate Fe(III) and Cu(II). In this study, D2EHPA and Cyanex 301 were employed to replace these ionic liquids. Fe(III) and Cu(II) from the sulfate solution were sequentially extracted using 0.5 M D2EHPA with three stages of cross-current and 0.3 M Cyanex 301. The stripping of Fe(III) and Cu(II) from the loaded phases was performed using 50% (v/v) and 60% (v/v) aqua regia solutions, respectively. The mass balance results from this process indicated that the recovery and purity percentages of the metals were greater than 99%.

  • A metal salt solution was prepared from valuable metals (Ni, Co, Mn) recovered from a scrap of waste lithium secondary batteries, and an NCM811 precursor was synthesized from the solution. The effect on precursor formation according to reaction time was confirmed by SEM, PSA, and ICP analysis. Based on the analysis results, the electrochemical properties of the synthesized NCM811 precursor and the commercial NCM811 precursor were investigated. The Galvano charge-discharge cycle, rate performance, and Cycle performance were compared, and as a result, there was no significant difference from commercial precursors.

  • Recycling technologies would be required in consideration of increasing demand in lithium ion batteries (LIBs). In this study, the leaching behavior of Ni, Co and Mn is investigated with ammoniacal medium for spent cathode active materials, which are separated from a commercial LIB pack in hybrid electric vehicles. The leaching behavior of each metal is analyzed in the presence of reducing agent and pH buffering agent. The existence of reducing agent is necessary to increase the leaching efficiency of Ni and Co. The leaching of Mn is insignificant even with the existence of reducing agent in contrast to Ni and Co. The most conspicuous difference between acid and ammoniacal leaching would be the selective leaching behavior between Ni/Co and Mn. The ammoniacal leaching can reduce the cost of basic reagent that makes the pH of leachate higher for the precipitation of leached metals in the acid leaching.

  • This study examined the characteristics of the waste catalyst used in the petroleum refinery operations. The total pore volume, specific surface area, and average pore size of the spent catalyst used in the petroleum refinery operations were 3.96cc/g, 13.81m2/g, and 1.15A, respectively. The weight loss observed in the range from $25^{\circ}C-700^{\circ}C$ for the spent catalysts using TG and DTA was approximately 23 wt. %. EDS analysis of the waste catalyst sample showed that the five major components were vanadium, nickel, manganese, iron, and copper. The extraction system is attractive for liquid-liquid extraction. In this study, Cynex 272 was used to extract vanadium from waste catalyst. The electrochemical characteristics of the extracted vanadium solution were measured by cyclic voltammetry (CV). As a result, an oxidation / reduction peak appeared, indicating the potential of an electrolytic solution.

  • $Li_{0.44}MnO_2$cathode material has high reversibility during lithium insertion processes and is not easily damaged through over-charging or over-discharging. $Mn_2O_3$is often present as an impurity phase, and reduce the electrochemical capacity of electrode because this phase is electrochemically inert. Adding of excess NaOH reduced the $Mn_2O_3$to the content under undetectable by X-ray diffraction. Because the capacity can be increased in the cathode materials with larger unit cell, some of the manganese was replaced with titanium having larger ion size, and powders with the formula $Li_{0.44}T_{iy}Mn_{1-y}O_2$(where y = 0.11, 0.22, 0.33, 0.44, and 0.55) was synthesized and characterized. A maximum reversible capacity of 150 mAh/g was obtained for $Li/P(EO)_8$LiTFSI/$Li_{0.44}Ti_{0.22}Mn_{0.78}O_2$cells in electrochemical potential spectroscopy (ECPS) experiments. Cells with the titanium-doped manganese oxides exhibited a fade rate of 0.12 % or less per cycle.

  • High-voltage operation of the lithium ion battery is one of the advantageous approaches to obtain high energy capacity without changing the conventional cell components and structure. However, operating at harsh condition inevitably results in severe side reactions at the electrode surface and structural disintegration of active material particles. Herein we coated layers composed of $Al_2O_3$ and ZnO on the electrode based on NCM using atomic layer deposition (ALD). Thicker layers of novel Al-doped ZnO (AZO) coating compared to conventional ALD coated layers are prepared. Cathode based on NCM with the varying AZO coating thickness are fabricated and used for coin cell assembly. Effect of ALD coating thickness on the charge-discharge cycle behavior obtained at high-voltage operation was investigated.

  • Lithium carbonate recovered from the waste solution generated during the lithium secondary battery manufacturing process contains heavy metals such as cobalt, nickel, and manganese. In this study, the recrystallization of lithium carbonate was performed to remove heavy metals contained in the powder and to increase the purity of lithium carbonate. First, the leaching efficiency of lithium carbonate according to pH in the aqueous hydrochloric acid solution was examined, and the effect on the recrystallization of lithium carbonate according to the equivalent and concentration of sodium carbonate was confirmed. As the equivalent and concentration of sodium carbonate increased, the recovery rate of lithium carbonate improved. And the SEM image showed that the crystal shape was changed depending on the reaction conditions with sodium carbonate. Finally, the high purity lithium carbonate of 99.9% or more was recovered by washing with water.
