In this study, we presents a simple microfluidic approach for generating uniform Poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG) microfiber. Elongated flow pattern of monomer induced by sheath flow of immiscible oil as continuous phase is generated in Y-shape junction and in situ polymerization by UV exposure. For uniform microfiber, we investigate the optimized flow condition and draw phase diagram as function of Ca and Qd. At the region for stable elongated flow pattern, the microfiber generated in microfluidic chip is very uniform and highly reproducible. Importantly, the thickness of microfibers can be easily controlled by flow rate of continuous and disperse phase. We also demonstrate the feasibility for biological application as encapsulating FITC-BSA in PEG microfiber.

Superhydrophobic micro-nano hybrid structures were fabricated by reactive ion etching of hydrophobic polymer micro patterns using gold nanoparticles as etch masks. Micro structures of perfluoropolyether bisurethane methacrylate (PFPE) were prepared by soft-lithographic technique using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) molds. Water contact angles on the surfaces of various PFPE micro structures and corresponding micro-nano hybrid structures were compared to examine the effects of micro patterning and nanostructure formation in the manifestation of superhydrophobicity. The PFPE micro-nano hybrid structures exhibited a very stable superhydrophobicity, while the micro-only structures could not reach the superhydrophobicity but only showed the unstable hydrophobicity.

Micro igniter on the glass membrane for MEMS thruster was developed. The stability of the micro igniter by using a glass membrane with a thickness of tens of microns was improved. The micro igniter was fabricated by anisotropic wet etching of photosensitive glass and deposition of Pt/Ti for electric heat coil. The solid propellant was loaded into the propellant chamber without an especial technique due to the high structural stability of the glass membrane. Ignition tests were performed successfully. The minimum ignition delay was 27.5 ms with an ignition energy of 19.3 mJ.

Waveform micropile is an advanced construction method that combined the concept of conventional micropile with jet grouting method. This new form of micropile was developed to improve frictional resistance, which consequently leads to achieving higher bearing capacity and cost efficiency. Two field tests were conducted to examine the field applicability as well as to verify the effects of bearing capacity enhancement. In particular, waveform micropile construction using jet grouting method was performed to evaluate the viability of waveform micropile installation. After testing, the surrounding ground was excavated to check the accomplishment on the shape of waveform micropile. The result showed that waveform micropile can be installed by adjusting the grouting time and pressure. In the loading tests, waveform micropile's bearing capacity increased by 1.4 to 2.3 times depending on their shapes when compared with conventional micropile. Overall results clearly demonstrated that waveform micropile is an enhanced construction method that can improve bearing capacity.
