  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the current status, including the maintenance problems and removal efficiency, of small sewage treatment facilities in Chung-nam province(Asan, Buyeo, and Gongju city). Our results showed that inflow water quality of Asan city was 19.1 mg/L of BOD, 29.0 mg/L of COD, 13.4 mg/L of T-N and 1.5 mg/L of T-P, respectively, which was much higher than any other site. Among the factors known to be an important index of water quality, the SS and BOD removal efficiency was about 70% and 50% respectively. However, the nitrogen removal efficiency was less than 10%. The total removal efficiency of pollutant was 71.1% of SS, 52.6% of BOD, 46.2% of COD, 9.2% of T-P and 4.6% of T-N respectively. Therefore nitrogen removal processes are required to prevent serious eutrophication of small river. Removal efficiency for BOD and SS of high-efficient sewage treatment facilities (STFs) and contact oxidation process was much higher than another process. Performance of these sewage treatment facilities(STFs) is not optimal due to ineffective planning for the inflow water quality. To improve these facilities, it is proposed that a technical expert analysis of water quality at these facilities is periodically required.

  • This study was carried out to suggest the plans for installation of rural sewage treatment facilities through the analysis of these facilities installed in Chungchongnam-do Province. About 5% of all installation was carried out by the department of wastewater and related environment problems and the other case was carried out by the department of construction or residence. In wastewater caused by 250 and 300 persons, facilities capacity do not exceed about $50m^3/d$, caused by 2,500 and 3,000 persons, $500m^3/d$. Advanced sewage treatment process were first needed in the discharge area where affected the water environment greatly. However, in carrying out the water quality pollutant of the total amount management system in the other areas, they should be driven only over the scale of pollutant quota object facilities standard. Rural sewage must be included in the special accounts according to the regulations of local government, and sewage treatment cost should be collected to manage. Installation type uses integrating joint treatment method in case the distance among villages is short or one treatment facility independently.

  • Rural area sewage distribution rate is 40 % less than urban area. Previous research results announced that one of the reason in water resource pollution was caused of low rural area sewage distribution rate. Analysis on operation result of 11 RCSTP in Bong-hwa area which is located at the upper region of An-dong Dam and Im-ha Dam. Based on operation result, an analysis on characteristics of wastewater in Bong-hwa and treatment efficiency of installed treatment process was conducted. The wastewater influent of Bong-hwa contained high organic matter and nutrient than those of urban area. Treatment process showed totally stable treatment efficiency. But, The treatment efficiency for nutrient showed high fluctuation. This result means which is need to operation condition control of nutrient treatment when operating RCSTP.

  • Currently in 2018, Korea has over 600 operating sewage disposal facilities. The law requires a sewage treatment plant to treat 500 tons or more of water per day, and a small-decentralized sewage treatment facility in a community to treat 50 tons or more to less than 500 tons of water per day. However, most facilities fulfill neither the quantity nor the quality requirements from the original design for such reasons as inflow of rainwater and ground water due to deterioration of pipelines and unauthorized input of wastewater in the pipelines. The research has selected 2 representative cases among the technical diagnosif sewage pipelines in many regions within the country to use it as the baseline of: hourly flowrate and BOD water quality analysis in both clear and rainy days, proper plant operation through inflow rate and ratio calculation, and diagnostic evaluation for deterioration of the pipelines and their accessary structures. This also suggests facilities that treats 500 tons or more of inflow per day to sample and analyze the water hourly for 24 hours once a week in both clear weather and rainy weather considering the influence of rainfall on a regular basis.

  • As of 2017, the sewerage penetration rate of Seoul and metropolitan cities is more than 90%, and the number of domestic sewage treatment plants increased by 25% from 3,064 in 2010 to 4,072 in 2017. Among them, sewage treatment plant operated by SBR system is 585, which is 17% higher than 2010. In order to improve the water quality of the water source and improve the operation of the small sewage facilities, the improvement of the process was studied by applying the modelling to 49 facilities of the sewage treatment plant in Andong Imha dam area with more than 500㎥/day 3 places and 46 places less than 500㎥/day. As an improvement plan for modelling, candidate data were derived by reviewing operation data for 5 years. 49 facilities are operated by 12 types of operating processes. Among them, 1 place mort than 500㎥/day with SBR method and 9 facilities with less than 500㎥/day were selected by dividing 46 sites into 3 types. As a result of applying modelling to more than 500㎥/day, it was possible to improve the quality of discharged water through SRT control and it was found that applying model to sites of small scale treatment plants can improve the removal efficiency of TP by up to 14.4%. As a result, the data of this study could be used to improve and improve the operation of sewage treatment plants and RCSTP(Rural Community Sewage Tratment Plant).

  • In 2009 the Korea Ministry of Environment announced 'A Comprehensive Plan for the Improvement of Sewer Service in Rural Area' aiming at reduction of the sewer service gap between urban and rural areas as well as improvement in the residential environment of the rural area. According to the plan, the sewer system supply rate for the rural area is expected to reach up to 75% until 2015 with the budget of 4.7 trillion won (Korean currency). It is not certain, however, that the increase in the sewer system supply rate will accompany improvement of water quality in receiving water because several veiled problems that can occur in small-scale sewer treatment plants are poorly addressed in the plan. In this study, those issues for the small-scale sewer treatment plants and their solutions were discussed based on a case study in which we investigated 19 treatment facilities at two rural regions in Gyeonggi province. This study also included strategies useful for the plan. From the results of investigation, some problems, e.g., high hourly variations but low in flowrates and low mass loading were commonly identified. Although operation parameters in sewer treatment plants require to be modified depending on the mass loading, most of the plants were operated with the initial design parameters which causes the decrease of removal efficiency. In the intensive diagnosis, we arranged and applied solutions (e.g., flow equalization, air on/off time control, etc) to the two selected plants and found out improvement of effluent water quality, especially organic matters (COD and SS) and T-N with better denitrification performance.

  • This study centering on 10 village - Bangjuks analyzed multifunctionality value of village Bangjuks which have been main water treatment system in Korean traditional villages. On the basis of understanding the structure and character of components such as the well, common spring, village waterway and others which making water-flow and consisting of aquatic system in Korean traditional village Bangjuk, the conclusion as the instrumental device of social and ecological role and ecological watershed management, securing the ecosystem soundness of the damaged or deteriated aquatic ecosystem due to the industrialization and urbanization is as below; 1. The traditional village Bangjuk was environmentally friendly hydraulic system which gathers waterways of village into a point including sewage water, retains and flows out to village through agricultural waterway. Through this Bangjuk, they have managed sewage and rainfall runoff flowed out village efficiently. It is not only a detention system of water but a kind of eco-friendly system that flow out water into the rivers after reusing and filtering it. 2. Around five traditional villages and five villages after modernization, this study classified the types of village Bangjuk as three types considering geographic location, size, etc; marsh type of low swamp, high water -low rice field type of natural flow stucture, low water - high rice field type requiring artificial irrigation facility. All the five traditional villages were turned out to be marsh type of low swamp. Geoji, Sanjeri, Ma-am, Yangchon of the agricultural villages were high water-low rice filed type, and Sangchoenri village was classified low water-high rice field type. 3. This study checked up the function of water purification of village Bangjuk. In Wonteo and Geji villages affected by discharge of village sewer and domestic sewage, the efficiency of ammonia nitrogen($NH_3-N$) and total phosphorus(T-P) was 56~95%, which was high. In Sangcheonri and Sanjeri villages strongly affected by stall and farmland, the efficiency of suspended solids(SS) was 70~85%, and that of total nitrogen(T-N) and total phosphorus(T-P) was 5.3~65%. 4. A water purification system can be found out in the system of village Bangjuk that filter out village sewage and rainfall runoff flowed through the settle and filter of pollution source and denitrification of plants. Through this system of village Bangjuk, it must be used as the basic facilities for the ecological watershed management. The sewage management system of village Bangjuk as a eco-filter must be used and studied as an eco-friendly facility for the ecological watershed management around the subwatershed and catchment.

  • The feasibility of the Natural and Ecological Wastewater treatment System (NEWS) was examined for rural wastewater treatment in Korea. The intermittent trickling biofilter with high hydrophilic filter media was used for pretreatment for suspended solids and organic pollutants. The subsequent constructed wetland with porous granule materials was used for promoting nutrient removal. The results show that the removal efficiencies of the system were high with respect to the water quality parameters except COD. Even if the effluent from the biofilter did not meet the guidelines for wastewater treatment plant effluent in Korea in terms of $BOD_5$ and TN, the final effluent of the system meets the guidelines us to good performance of the constructed wetland. The regression analysis between pollutant loading rate and removal rate indicated that the system could have stable removal for SS, $BOD_5$, TN, and TP in the given influent ranges. The analysis in the winter period indicated that the wetland covered with transparent polycarbonate glass had the statble performance during the winter period dus to increase of temperature inside the wetland without any heating system. With the stable performance, effective poilutant removal, low maintenance, and cost-effectiveness, the NEWS could be considered as an alternative treatment system for decentralized regions and rural communities in Korea.
