Honors Program for Gifted Students at University-level ; on Selection and Curriculum (대학 단계의 과학영재 특화교육 프로그램 - 학생 선발 및 교육과정을 중심으로 -)

  • For years, poor research and working conditions in the field of science and engineering in Korea led to the migration of gifted students to seek a better academic environment. The primary reason for such a phenomenon is the lack of a coherent education system for gifted students. With the support from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science & Creativity, Hanyang University launched an exploring project to introduce an Honors Program, aiming to provide specialized and systematic learning opportunities as well as supporting greater academic achievements for gifted students at university-level. Students admitted to this program were selected not by conventional standards but by competency-based selection process, assessed through an in-depth interview. The specific goal of this program is to prepare gifted and talented students not only for an academic pioneer with the highest caliber in the field of science, but also for a global leader equipped with a creative view as well as integrity and a convergent mind. Distinctive features of this program include emphasis on fundamental science and consilience, problem solving skills, first-hand education, interpersonal skills, and global communication skills as well as individualization of the learning experience, among many others. This paper provides a short glimpse of the focus and methodology Honors Program in Hanyang University offers.

The Effect of Perceived Similarity on Leader-member Exchange and Deviant Workplace Behavior (비교이론이 리더-구성원 교환이론과 직장 내 일탈행위에 미치는 영향)

  • Using a sample of two-hundred thirty-eight employees in the service industry, this study examined the relationships between perceived similarity, leader-member exchange (LMX), envy, and deviant workplace behavior (DWB) drawing on social comparison theory. Specifically, the current study predicts that an individual who perceives similarity to co-workers whose LMX is higher is more likely to report lower levels of LMX by focusing on upward social comparison. In addition, the study examines the moderating effect of envy in the relationship between perceived similarity and LMX. The results of the study supported the hypotheses, implying that, first, envious feelings coming from lower levels of LMX positively predict DWB. Second, employee envy moderated the relationship between perceived similarity and LMX such that envious people who report being similar to their colleagues also report lower levels of LMX with their supervisors. This means that employees who reported lower levels of LMX with their supervisors, reported committing more DWB than their counterparts. Finally, LMX mediates the relationship between perceived similarity and DWB, indicating that individuals who view themselves similarly to their colleagues report lower levels of LMX with their supervisors and in turn commit more DWB. We believe that it highlights the need for employees to feel special in order to have unique attention by, and relationships with their supervisors. These results have implications and suggest the need for the further study of employee's negative emotions, LMX theory, and DWB.

Study on the Place Image Factors for Place Branding of Public Libraries (공공도서관의 장소브랜딩을 위한 장소이미지요인에 관한 연구)

  • This study generated primary data for supporting the place branding as a part of the library advertising and marketing strategies to increase public library visits. The literature review enabled the use of the place branding concepts to discover the relationships among the constituent parts, factors, expected outcomes, and loyalty, then to develop the research model and the hypothesis, which were verified using the Structural Equation Model. There were 34 research hypotheses, of which 21 were adopted. The place image factors such as library reliability, library reciprocity, and library safety were found to be significant. This study derived social contribution value as new place value and place image factors as the potential brand image of public libraries. It helped select the place image factors that best fit the local library's core values (i.e., place value). This study is meaningful because it is a fundamental study to introduce place branding in public libraries as an advertising and marketing strategy. And it is expected that public libraries will grow into high-quality brands with high awareness, loyalty, and secure leadership in the local community.

The Relationship between the Head nurses' Leadership Style and the Autonomy Perceived by Nurses (임상간호사가 지각한 수간호사의 리더십 유형과 자율성과의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between the head nurses' leadership style the and the autonomy perceived by nurses and to provide the basic data for developing strategies of the effective nurse staff management. The subjects were 177 nurses who were working at the 3 general hospitals in Seoul. The data were collected from December 1999 to January 2000 by the structured questionnaires. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression with $SPSS-PC^+$ version 8.0 were used. The results of this study were as follows : 1. The score of 'the head nurses' transformational leadership perceived by nurses' was highier than that of 'the head nurses' transactional leadership'. Among 5 subdimensions of 'the leadership styles perceived by nurse', the scores of the 'charisma' and 'intellectual stimulation' were highest and the lowest one was that of 'extra management'. 2. Only 'the head nurses' transformational leadership perceived nurses' and 'the situatuational reward' showed a significant difference according to the married status ; nurses who were married showed higher scores than who were not. 3. 'The autonomy perceived by nurses' showed a significant difference according to the educational background ; nurses who had master degree showed higher score than who had diploma. 4. 'Charisma' was positively related to 'intellectual stimulation', 'individual consideration', and 'situational reward'. 'Intellectual stimulation' was positively related to 'individual consideration' and 'situational reward'. 'Individual consideration' was positively related to 'situational reward'. But 'extra management' was negatively related to all of variables. 'Autonomy' was significantly related to 'individual consideration' and 'the transformational leadership'. 5. The determinents of 'the autonomy perceived by nurses' were 'individual consideration' and the educational background, and they explained 15.4% of the total variance of it. The key determinent variables was 'individual consideration'. It explained 11.5% of the total variance of the autonomy. According to the results of this study, the suggestions were as follows: 1. It is necessary to develop strategies for exercising the head nurses' transformational leadership in nursing department : It should to be considered the difference in the leadership style perceived by nurses according to demographic variables. 2. The further studys on the individual consideration of head nurses' transformational leadership and the opportunity of self-development such as education for enhancing nurses' autonomy is needed.

A Meta-analysis of variables related to organizational commitment of social workers (사회복지사의 조직몰입과 관련된 변인에 관한 메타분석)

  • This study examined the correlation between the variables related to the organizational commitment of social workers. The research results are as follows. First, the overall effect size of the variable group had an intermediate effect size. Among the four organizational commitment-related variables, the job-related negative variable had the largest effect size. Next, the group of positive variables related to the organization, the group of positive variables related to the job, and the group of individuals related to the individual were in order. Second, among the individual-related variables, experience, gender, and education showed a small effect size, and other factors were close to the small effect size. In the group of positive variables related to organization, all variables except for transactional leadership and organizational fairness, which had a medium effect size, showed a large effect size. The job-related positive variables showed a large effect size only for job satisfaction, and customer orientation and job suitability were close to the large effect size. The turnover intention, which is a group of job-related negative variables, had a large effect size and job stress showed a medium effect size.

  • The meaning and role of science culture based on such values as rational thinking, creativity, critical validation has been growing in the process of discussing various social problems. In order to diffuse science culture, it is important to sustain citizen's activeness by providing contents which can induce interest on the base of two-way communication between public and experts and to support citizen activities performed voluntarily. To that end, various people such as scientist, government policymaker, communicator, those in charge of culture and art, exhibition curator should make up collaboration system and such requirement as motivation, leadership, agreement between the participants, communication, trust relationship is also to be met properly in order to proceed collaboration efficiently. This study reviews how these factors are coming true in governmental project for science culture and develops proposal for improvement on the base of opinions collected through expert meetings, interviews, workshop and data research. In addition, it explains that government must strengthen scientific cultural project personnel and lay infra such as communications hub, regional center, platform and improve the business selection method to promote competition and collaboration among project participants with reformation of reward and regulatory systems. It is performed to suggest comprehensive ways to increase efficiency of project for science culture out of not the deficit model which regard public as passive acceptant but context model or PES(public engagement in science) that take public who focus his attention and participate actively into account.

Educational Contents of 'Understanding of self as an adolescent' Unit to Build Adolescent Empowerment(I): comparison of Home Economics Textbooks of Korea and the U.S. (청소년의 임파워먼트 형성에 초점을 둔 '청소년의 이해' 단원의 한·미 교과서 교육내용 검토(제1보))

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the educational contents of home economics textbooks that solely focus on forming adolescent empowerment. For this, an in-depth content analysis was conducted on the home economics textbooks in Korea and the U.S. The main results of this study are summarized as follows: First, the 23 content elements, which are designed to build adolescent empowerment, were ascertained: nine intrapersonal empowerment elements such as the self-identity, nine interpersonal empowerment elements such as the communication, and five social empowerment elements such as the leadership. Second, based on the content elements selected from above, the textbooks in Korea were observed to deal with 58% of the 23 content elements, while those in the U.S. discussed 90% of the 23 content elements. Korean textbooks primarily focused on helping students understand major concepts, whereas the U.S. textbooks focused primarily on helping students make connections between major concepts and their life. Lastly, both countries put the least amount of weight on social empowerment content elements(Korea: 37%, U.S.: 70%).

A study on Empowerment of the Clinical Dental Hygienists (임상치과위생사의 임파워먼트에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to collect the basic data to provide for the purpose of the development of dental field. This research is to find the relationship between the level of recognized empowerment of hygienists working in dental clinics and the factors influencing on work achievement in the system of dental clinics. The population of the research is some randomely chosen dental clinics located in Seoul City during the period from March 22 to April 30, 2010, and the sample of 256 female dental hygienists working in the field were recruited as the analysis object group. The data on general characteristics and empowerment were collected by a questionnaire survey. The collected data were analyzed with the SPSS WIN 12.0 program. The following shows the results of this study. 1. The empowerment level of the analysis subject group was 3.63. It is significant statistically that the longer working career or higher annual salary, the higher empowerment level (p<0.05). 2. It shows the high level of empowerment in the group of hygienists who are in education counsel (p<0.01), and who have a permanent job (p<0.05) than others. 3. There is a significant correlation among capability, age, career, annual salary (p<0.01). 4. There is a significant correlation among self determination, age(p<0.05), career (p<0.01), annual salary (p<0.05). 5. In regression analysis, career is proved as one of the significant factors that is related to the empowerment in dental hygienists (p<0.05). This finding shows high level of empowerment in dental hygienists who hold high level of career, annual salary, education counsel jobs, or permanent jobs. Therefore, I suggest with the result of the study that the organization of dental clinic needs to improve its capability and efficiency with the efficient manpower management. Particularly, there need to be various kinds of leadership-trainning and education-program development to enhance empowerment in hygienists as professionals through independent self-decision making experiences and role do experiences.

A Study on the Ideal Leadership whole person of Confucian philosophy (유가(儒家)의 전인적(全人的) 지도자상(指導者像) 고찰(考察))

  • This paper aims to define the leadership of Gunja (君子, translated into prince, gentleman, or ideal man) based on Confucian Classics which offer the general values and norms of individuals' virtue and social virtuous acts. Thus, humanitarianism is regarded as true value, and the values of a virtuous person who properly practices social human relationships are discussed. The real worth of Gunja image is discussed as a true human image of "self-completion and completion of all things" (成己成物) which involves the convergence of truth, good and beauty where there is a sense of harmony and balance, where there is stern self discipline and self cultivation and where win-win values of human relationships are created. Confucian saint (聖人), wise man (賢人), great man (大人), and gentleman (君子) mean social leaders. They practice human morals, enlighten and beautify society with teachings, and are indicated as equipped with mental and material harmony, good character and competence, and economic power and morality. People today pursue their own personal growth according to their material preferences rather than pure intellectual cultural values, and are engrossed in visually beautiful external unlimited competition. In this digital age, we are supposed to demonstrate our individuality, but many people are obsessed with appearance, go on severe diet, and lose their health beauty, and consequently suffer mental stress. This trend fuels obsession with appearance and the sick practice of valuing appearance. As an alternative method to overcome this phenomenon, we need a leader image with the convergence of truth, good and beauty, which is characterized by internal self cultivation, external professionalism, and handsome and solid character. Confucian thoughts consist in practicing the Way of disciplining oneself for governing others (修己治人). Self discipline involves developing personal virtuous ability for cultivating a virtuous character, and governing others involves interacting to work together in society and to have right human relationships. Thus, leaders should impress not only themselves but also others. Self discipline for governing others means cultivating virtue for oneself and leading others. A true leader has self introspection and establishes himself through self discipline so that he can govern others or reach the realm of settling others where people live together. As all things have a value and a virtue, humans endeavor to cultivate character and virtue by learning and studying for securing their professionalism, reliability, character and ability, so as to create their own brand value. Personal character does not come from a high position, wealth and power. Character is a personal virtue, and is cultivated as immaculate and fresh through self discipline. As such, it well matches with a clean and clear spirit. This offers the ideal leader as the Guja image who has an extremely humane character, as well as being equipped with inherent virtues of intellect, benevolence and courage. Self development can foster virtue and self management through self leadership and self discipline. The leader in the relationship area can practice his virtue through virtuous acts, in other words, even think from another person's perspective. Such leader is mentioned as the principle of measuring square in the Great Learning. In our viewpoint, the beauty of character can breed the seed of virtue through intellect, benevolence and courage, the beauty of win-win can realize the right virtue by showing exemplary acts to others through considerateness, and the beauty of harmony can love and care for others like me through the principle of measuring square, thereby realizing the universal principle of virtue and harmony, which is like my mind. As such, the ideal leader, when his virtue and mind of being considerate of others all blending well, can exercise his ability to the full, can live together and coexist with many people, and can grow again into a triumphant relationship.

Effects of Action Learning Approach on Learning Motivation and Problem-solving Capacity in NCS Vocational Competency Class of Polytechnic College (폴리텍대학 NCS 직업기초능력 수업에서 액션러닝방식이 학습자의 학습동기와 문제해결력에 미치는 영향)

  • This study analyzed effects of Action Learning approach on enhancing learning motivation and improving problem-solving capacity in NCS vocational competency classes of Polytechnic College. Targeted group is B Polytechnic College located in Chungnam, and 53 students in experimental group and 64 students in control group. analysis of data is descriptive statistic analysis and the multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) method to study sub factors of learning motivation and problem-solving ability. As a result, Action Learning approach has a great influence on connection, confidence, and satisfaction, among the sub factors of learning motivation. also figured that the approach has positive effects on problem clarifying, cause analysis, alternative developing, planning/practicing, and performance assessment, among the sub factors of problem-solving capacity. Moreover, Polytechnic College's NCS vocational competency classes are desirably required to adopt the approach of Action Learning for their educational method, as it fosters basic competencies, such as understanding of diverse perspectives, communicating, leadership, interpersonal relationship, self-development, coping with conflicts, operating meetings, to be learned while students are doing problem-solving activities under a team-working atmosphere.
