Fielding indices for explaining runs lost combining adjusted WHIP and the number of home runs allowed in Korean professional baseball (한국 프로야구에서 수정된 WHIP와 피홈런 수를 결합한 실점 설명 수비지표들)

  • We studied fielding indices to explain runs lost for Korean professional baseball teams, successively motivated by OPS and weighted OPS obtained by combining on-base percentage and slugging average that can adequately explain the run productivity of teams. We considered several combined indices made by combining fielding indices highly correlated with the runs lost of teams. Data analysis from all games in the regular seasons of 1982-2015 shows that weighted adjusted WPH 2 (defined as weighted average of adjusted WHIP and number of home runs allowed per inning) best explains runs lost. Weighted adjusted WPH 2 consisting of adjusted WHIP (with weight 34%) and number of home runs allowed per inning (with weight 66%) was found to be optimal weighted adjusted WPH 2 having correlation coefficient 0.95362 with average runs lost per game. This result is an improvement of the result of the index obtained in Kim and Kim (2015a). Analysis by chronological periods provides results that are not much different. Also we made a list of top 10 pitchers for each of the recent three years, based on the obtained index.

An Ignition Characteristics of Slinger Combustor at High Altitude Condition (고고도 조건에서 슬링거 연소기의 점화특성 연구)

  • High altitude ignition test was performed to understand high altitude ignition characteristics of slinger combustor. To verify ignition limits, test was carried out with variation of altitude and fuel nozzle rotational speed using AETF(Altitude Engine Test Facility) in KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute). From the result, the effect of major factors which affect on ignition characteristics was observed. The reduction of ignition limit with increasing altitude and expansion of ignition limit with increasing rotational speed of fuel nozzle was verified. Also minimum rotational speed of fuel nozzle at high altitude must be greater than that of seal level condition.

Combustion Characteristics of the Slinger Combustor (슬링거 연소기의 연소특성)

  • The study was performed to understand combustion characteristics of the slinger combustor. Liquid fuel is discharged radially outwards through injection holes drilled in the high speed rotating shaft. The spray test was peformed to verify atomizing characteristics with variation of fuel nozzle rotational speed by using PDPA system. SMD was measured at different RPM and values are 70$\mu\textrm{m}$ at 5,000RPM rpm, 60$\mu\textrm{m}$ at 10,000RPM and 40$\mu\textrm{m}$ at 20,000RPM. In the results, we found out that SMD is grown smaller with increasing rotational speed. In KARI combustion test facility, Ignition and combustion tests were performed by using combustor test rig. In the test results, ignition and combustion efficiency were improved according to increasing rotational speed. The measured radial temperature distribution at the combustor exit shows stable and fairly good distribution.

Analysis of Dyeing Components from Neolitsea sericea Koidz Bark (참식나무(Neolitsea sericea Koidz) 수피의 염착물질 분석)

  • Two compounds were isolated from the diethylether and ethyl acetate fraction of hot water extracts by TLC and column chromatography as dyeing components. The isolated compounds were characterized as H-dibenzoquinoline-2,10-diol,5,6,6a,7-tetrahydro-1,9-dimethoxy-6-methyl (compoundI) and lyoniresinol (compoundII) by NMR and Mass spectrophotometry. To investigate if the isolated compounds are involved in the dyeing process, HPLC analysis was used. The retention time of the components from dye used in the study and the dye decolorized from the dyed substrate, silk by ethyl acetate were compared to conform the identity of those compounds. The retention time of the components from the dye and decolorized solution were identical. As a results, those two compounds were considered as dye bound to the silk.

Changes of Antioxidant Activity and Lignan Contents in Schisandra chinensis by Harvesting Times (수확시기에 따른 오미자의 항산화 활성과 리그난 성분 함량 변화)

  • We investigated antioxidant activity and lignan contents by harvesting times to expand use of Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baillon. Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents of seed was higher than those of flesh but there is not much difference in harvesting times. As $RC_{50}$ value, that was, the concentration of sample required for 50% reduction of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical, was 13.7~24.2 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$ in seed thus it showed a high antioxidant activity. Among lignan components, schizandrin content was the highest and followed by gomisin N and gomisin A in all of flesh and seed. Also these components in seed were 4~9 times more contained than those of flesh. All of them were decreased by harvesting times in flesh. But the contents of schizandrin and gomisin N were high in August 3rd and September 15th in seed, respectively. As the results, the seed of S. chinensis had high antioxidant activity and lignan contents so it could be potentially developed as a resource.

  • Upgrade development of a high pressure ratio centrifugal compressor in marine engine turbochargers is presented. A new matched operating point at increased speed of rotation was determined through system cycle analysis using the exisitng test data of turbine performance. Under some severe restrictions for geometric parameters, the state-of-the-art methods of both aerodynamic design and CFD analysis were applied, in which only an impeller, a vaned diffusor and some part of casing wall were modified. Prototype hardware was fabricated and assembled for system performance tests. Excellent performance in pressure ratio and efficiency was obtained over whole speed region. Reduced surge and choke margin was, however, observed at design speed of rotation.

  • In teaching probability and statistics classes, we should increase efforts to develop examples that enhance teaching methodology in delivering more meaningful knowledge to students. Sports is one field that provides a variety of examples and World Cup Soccer events are a treasure house of many interesting problems. Teaching, using examples from this field, is an effective way to enhance the interest of students in probability and statistics because World Cup Soccer is a matter of national interest. In this paper, we have suggested several examples pertaining to counting the number of cases and computing probabilities. These examples are related to many issues such as possible scenarios in the preliminary round, victory points necessary for each participant to advance to the second round, and the issue of grouping teams. Based on a simulation using a statistical model, we have proposed a logical method for computing the probabilities of proceeding to the second round and winning the championship for each participant in the 2010 South Africa World Cup.

Development of a Video Caption Recognition System for Sport Event Broadcasting (스포츠 중계를 위한 자막 인식 시스템 개발)

  • A video caption recognition system has been developed for broadcasting sport events such as major league baseball. The purpose of the system is to translate the information expressed in English units such as miles per hour (MPH) to the international system of units (SI) such as km/h. The system detects the ball speed displayed in the video and recognizes the numerals. The ball speed is then converted to km/h and displayed by the following character generator (CG) system. Although neural-network based methods are widely used for character and numeral recognition, we use template matching to avoid the training process required before the broadcasting. With the proposed template matching method, the operator can cope with the situation when the caption’s appearance changed without any notification. Templates are configured by the operator with a captured screenshot of the first pitch with ball speed. Templates are updated with following correct recognition results. The accuracy of the recognition module is over 97%, which is still not enough for live broadcasting. When the recognition confidence is low, the system asks the operator for the correct recognition result. The operator chooses the right one using hot keys.

  • The platform of railroad station for domestic passenger train has been operated at two categories like the platforms if low level(500mm, mainline) and high level(1,135mm, metropolitan subway line). To operate both metropolitan subway line and mainline railroad safely, it is essential to develop the doorstep equipment of railway vehicle regardless of low and high level platforms. On the other hand, the domestic test standard at durability and reliability of doorstep equipment has not been existed until now. This study aims at the development on doorstep equipment of telescopic sliding type for low and high level platforms. Durability analysis with VPD(Virtual Product Development) techniques are performed and the durability standard & qualification life through the rig test during no failure test time is examined in accordance with reliability qualification test.

  • Beside fire resistance, for Phenolic Composites(here-in-after PCs), in actual, moisture resistance are also needed when they are applied to components in wet uses such as in Naval vessels and in off-shore operations where direct water contact may be expected. PCs have so-called 'Micro-porous' when they are made by normal GRP manufacturing techniques, which causes much larger amounts of water absorption in them to higher level of around $7\%$. So, this figure, which indicate impending disaster in a polyester matrix laminate, has made some specifiers suspicious of the effect of the water on mechanical performance of PC in 'wet' service. To solve this problem, a large amount work has been carried out by workers in UK and US. This paper is an attempt to explain that the effect of the high water absorption of PCs is not the disaster that some 'prophets' may foretell. Let's open our next door fur better society much safetyfied by our own efforts with PCs. like in UK.
