Smilax sieboldii is one of the Smilax species. A number of Smilax plants have long been used in traditional medicine in the tropics and subtropics worldwide. Repeated dose oral toxicity test is an essential experiment for toxicity evaluation before efficacy evaluation. The purpose of this study is to evaluate toxicity and the no-observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) using oral administration of Smilax sieboldii extract (SSE) in male and female ICR mice for 4 weeks. SSE was orally administered daily for 4 weeks at a dose of 500, 1000, and 2000 mg/kg/day (MPK). There were no significant differences in mortalities, clinical signs, body weight changes, food intake, hematological analysis, serum clinical chemistry test and relative organ weights in all animals administrated with SSE. The results obtained in this study suggest that SSE did not show any toxic effect in ICR mice and the NOAEL of SSE was regarded as over 2000 MPK.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the gastric mucosal damage effect by Hericium erinaceus cultibated with Artemisia capillaris (HEAC) with 0.15 M HCl in ethanol in rats. Among them, 80% ethanol extract showed potent inhibitory effect (67.7%) on gastritis. Using solvent fractionation, 80% ethanol extract of HEAC was separated into five fractions with $n$-hexane, methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, $n$-butanol and water. As a result, fractions obtained with methylene chloride exhibited strong inhibitory effects on gastritis. With this result, the methylene chloride extract was analyzed by GC/MS, HPLC, IR and NMR($^1H$, $^{13}C$) to identify primary active components and the main component in the extract was identified as ethyl linoleate. The effective does ($ED_{50}$) values of 80% ethanol extract of HEAC and ethyl linoleate showed 22.6 and 6.4 mg/kg, respectively and these values were higher than those of stillen (44.2 mg/kg) and selbex (46.5 mg/kg). Therefore, the administration of 80% ethanol extract of HEAC and ethyl linoleate have a strong protective effect agasint the gastritis induced by HCl-ethanol and may be promising new drug for treating gastritis and gastric ulcer.

Medicinal herb demonstrated in many pharmacological effects and recognized to be safe has been used for a long time. However, side effects including safety of medicinal herb have not been identified yet. The aim of the study was to estimate safety evaluation of Magnoliae Flos used for the treatment of pain, rhinitis, and pneumonia in Korea, China and Japan through four-week dose range finding toxicity test in male and female Sprague-Dawley rats. Magnoliae Flos was orally administered to male and female SD rats once a day for 28 days at 1,500 and 3,000 mg/kg. The safety evaluation was determined to examine clinical signs, mortality, body weight, food intake, hematology, serum biochemistry and relative organ weights and there were no significant changes related toxicity. Consequently, these findings indicates that Magnoliae Flos did not show any side effects including toxicity in dose range finding toxicity test and the no observed adverse effect level for Magnoliae Flos was estimated as more than 3,000 mg/kg.

Coocus laccae(Laccifer lacca Kerr), usually known as Lac, is a kind of cocoon which is parasitic on the tree around India and China. It contains the laconic acid of red colored dyes and has been used for cosmetic or natural dyeing prior to the introduction of New World cochineal. Nevertheless, the characterization of lac has not been studied, very little informed. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of dyeing conditions fur Lac extract, such as pH of dye bath, concentration of Lac exact dyeing temperature and time, to find out the optimum conditions. The results were as follow. 1. The highest K/S values of the silk and wool was shown at PH 3 and PH 4. 2. K/S values of the silk came to nearly the adsorption equilibrium state at 40$^{\circ}C$ and the curve of wool showed a dramatic increase with the increase of temperature. 3. Dyed silk and wool fabrics showed good light fastness without using mordants.
The protective effects of Red Ginseng on liver damage induced by linac X-ray and paraquat were investigated. To one group of ICR male mice were given in Red Ginseng(200mg/kg/day for 7days, orally) before 5Gy(1.01Gy/min) dose of linac X-ray irradiation. To another group were given in Red Ginseng (200mg/kg/day for 7days, orally) before paraquat(30mg/kg/day, orally) was Radiation irradiation group were given with saline(0.1ml) and 5Gy. Contrast group were given with saline(0.1ml). The levels of H2O2, catalase and MDA in liver tissue were measured. In Red Ginseng to paraquat(RG+PQ) group and Red Ginseng(RG+Rad) group than irradiation group(Rad), the catalase level were significantly increased, and the catalase levels were appeared at radiation protection. The Red Ginseng was significantly decreased to MDA and H2O2 level to paraquat(RG+PQ) group and Red Ginseng(RG+Rad) group than irradiation group(Rad). Therefore, Red Ginseng was very excellent protector on radiation and paraquat of liver in mice.

The biodegradable hyaluronic acid(HA) membranes cross-linked with lactide using the crosslinking agent, 1-ethyl-3(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide(EDC) were prepared as a potential biocompatible material for tissue engineering. HA membranes having different mechanical properties were synthesised by varying degree of the mole ratio of lactide to HA, EDC concentration, and crosslinking temperature. HA membranes were degradable in water solution and the degradation became slower with the increasing mole ratio of lactide to HA. HA membranes were sterilized using ethylene oxide gas and extracted with cell culture medium for 24 h at $37^{\circ}C$ and 200 rpm. Cytotoxicity of the extract was tested using NIH/3T3 mouse embryo fibroblast as a model cell. Growth inhibition was not observed in the extracts of HA membranes with the mole ratios of lactide to HA, 5 or 10, and 10% EDC concentration, however 11% of growth inhibition was observed in the extract with the mole ratio of 13. Growth inhibition was not observed in the extracts of HA membranes prepared with 5% EDC or 10% EDC and the mole ratio of lactide to HA, 10, however 12% of growth inhibition was observed in the extract with 20% EDC. Cytotoxicity was not observed in the extracts of HA membranes prepared at varying crosslinking temperatures, $15^{\circ}C,\;25^{\circ}C,\;and\;28^{\circ}C$ with the mole ratio of lactide to HA, 10 and 10% EDC.
In the present study, we investigated the biological activities of Xylosma congesta leaf ethanol extract (XCO) using a variety of in vitro and cell culture model systems for anti-melanogenic, anti-wrinkle, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activities. First, XCO markedly inhibited ${\alpha}$-melanocyte stimulating hormone-stimulated melanin synthesis in B16F10 cells. Secondly, XCO marginally induced procollagen synthesis in CCD-986SK cells. Thirdly, XCO dose-dependently suppressed lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide (NO) production in RAW 264.7 cells. XCO did not affect cell viability at different concentrations used in this study, indicating that XCO-mediated inhibition of melanin, procollagen and NO synthesis is not mediated by cytotoxicity. Finally, XCO was found to exert anti-oxidant effect. Taken together, these findings demonstrate for the first time that XCO possesses anti-melanogenic, anti-wrinkle, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activities, and suggest further evaluation and development of XCO as a functional supplement or cosmetic that may be useful for whitening skin, reducing wrinkles and treating inflammatory responses.

The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effects of methanolic extracts of cooked mixed grain rice samples, including grain rice (sorghum, black bean, proso millet, and Job's tears) mixed with fermented brown rice (GR), GR added with 0.5% water extract of Sanghwang mushroom (GRS) or 0.1% curry (GRK), and traditional five grain mixed rice (TMR, Ohgokbap), on $H_2O_2$-induced oxidative injury in LLC-PK1 pig renal epithelial cells. White rice (WR) was used as a positive control. Cells were first exposed to $H_2O_2$ ($250{\mu}M$) for 4 hr, followed by treatment with $100{\mu}g/mL$ of different GR extracts for 24 hr. $H_2O_2$ significantly induced cell damage (P<0.05). Cellular levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant enzymes, including catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-px), were measured. In addition, mRNA levels of antioxidant enzymes were determined by RT-PCR assay. Mixed grain rice, particularly GRS and GRK, were able to reduce cellular levels of ROS, decrease lipid peroxidation, and also increase mRNA expression of antioxidant enzymes compared to other samples. These results suggest that mixed grain rice, specifically GRS and GRK, have strong protective effects against $H_2O_2$-induced oxidative injury in LLC-PK1 cells through inhibition of lipid peroxidation, reduction of ROS levels, and elevation of antioxidant enzyme activities.
