  • This research intended to identify empirical recommendations for designing the DAISY service interface and used a case-based method. The case of this research was LG Digital Talking Book Library(http://voice.lg.or.kr) of LG Sangnam Library. A group of experts evaluated the current DAISY interface serviced by the web. After evaluation, major recommendations were suggested and these recommendations were used to develop the new DAISY Interface. Major recommendations were consideration of the reading flow of the screen-reader program, prevention of perception as an error about the time delay, development of web-based software, support for convenient functions and prevention of shortcut key overlap and so on.

  • This paper addresses issues related to the design of an interface supporting fine grained interaction with documents, focusing on a particular type of scholarly documents, journal articles. In order to make a usable interface we need to understand user behaviors as well as technologies that present new possibilities of enhancing user experience. This paper reviews studies along three dimensions : user information behavior in searching/using documents, new conceptual/technical models for electronic documents, and interaction mechanisms. Putting together the understanding of users and enabling technologies, requirements and considerations in developing systems with granular interactions are discussed in the conclusion.

  • This study proposed and evaluated electroencephalography (EEG)-based and eye-tracking-based methods to determine relevance by utilizing users' implicit relevance feedback while navigating content in a digital library. For this, EEG/eye-tracking experiments were conducted on 32 participants using video, image, and text data. To assess the usefulness of the proposed methods, deep learning-based artificial intelligence (AI) techniques were used as a competitive benchmark. The evaluation results showed that EEG component-based methods (av_P600 and f_P3b components) demonstrated high classification accuracy in selecting relevant videos and images (faces/emotions). In contrast, AI-based methods, specifically object recognition and natural language processing, showed high classification accuracy for selecting images (objects) and texts (newspaper articles). Finally, guidelines for implementing a digital library interface based on EEG, eye-tracking, and artificial intelligence technologies have been proposed. Specifically, a system model based on implicit relevance feedback has been presented. Moreover, to enhance classification accuracy, methods suitable for each media type have been suggested, including EEG-based, eye-tracking-based, and AI-based approaches.

  • This article is an overview of the digital library project, indicating what roles Koreas diverse digital collections may play. Our digital library prototype has simple architecture, consisting of digital repositories, filters, indexing and searching, and clients. Digital repositories include various types of materials and databases. The role of filters is to recognize a format of a document collection and mark the structural components of each of its documents. We are using a database management system (ORACLE and ConText) supporting user-defined functions and access methods that allows us to easily incorporate new object analysis, structuring, and indexing technology into a repository. Clients can be considered browsers or viewers designed for different document data types, such as image, audio, video, SGML, PDF, and KORMARC. The combination of navigational tools supports a variety of approaches to identifying collections and browsing or searching for individual items. The search interface was implemented using HTML forms and the World Wide Web's CGI mechanism.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the political and functional requirements of the regional library portal and to evaluate such requirements. A literature review was carried out to discuss library portal, and introduce the best practices of the regional library portal. After analyzing the political and functional requirements of the regional library portal, AHP was applied to evaluate requirements. In the political requirements, standards, digital collection development, operation and evaluation were ranked according to importance, and copyright & licence management which belongs to digital collection development was underrated. There were differences in the importance among the functional requirements of the regional library portal, integrated search, integrated interface, information service, separated digital collection management and access management were ranked according to importance.

  • Examinations and analysis were done to understand the digital reference services of the Teaching & Learning Aid Centers under 16 metropolitan city and provincial offices of education. The data used were collected from July 3. 2006 to July 15. 2006 by the direct contacts on their main homepages and recording the question and answer transcripts. It was proven that 13 of the 16 Teaching & Learning Aid Centers have done the reference services. In this study, several characteristics-whether the digital reference service was done or not, interface access level, its title, its communication tool, reference question number, reference question style, answer rate, etc-were analyzed. Tips for the future development were provided on the basis of the inadequacies and other findings revealed through this study.

  • As coming Senior-Shift age, senior users are regarded as one of the importance user groups in the library. This study is to find the usage patterns and needs of libraries and digital libraries by 152 seniors and to compare with young-old age (baby boom generation) and elderly age. As a result, total seniors visited regularly and preferred political & social, religion & philosophy, and history & geography. While the baby boom generation are using the economy & finance, art & culture compared to the older. And the baby boom generation visit for self-development and the older visit for leisure purposes. Secondly, If the search fails, the baby boomers control the results themselves, while the older is more turn to the librarians. It can be described as the need for a librarian exclusively responsible for the senior. Thirdly, senior have difficulties in access and use of search aided tools or functions. Therefore, this study suggested that it is necessary to build an intuitive interface using the help and menu descriptions for senior who have poor access to convenience and define functions.

  • This study examines the design and utilization of video storyboard surrogates in the digital video libraries. To do this, first we constructed the arrangement model of key-frames for storyboard based on the FRBR model, image communication and PRECIS Indexing theories and evaluated the model using 6 sample videos and 26 participants. The study results show that the video storyboard surrogates based on the arrangement model has a higher accuracy value in terms of summary extraction than that of the sequential video storyboard. Moreover, watching both types of video storyboard one after another, especially browsing the sequential video storyboard first and then the arrangement model-based one, produces a remarkable increase in accuracy value of summary extraction. The study proposes two methods of utilizing the video storyboard surrogates in the digital video libraries: Designing a video browsing interface where users can use the sequential storyboard as a default and then the arrangement model-based one for re-watching; and utilizing the arrangement model-based storyboard as structured match sources of image-based queries.
