  • Recently, there are quite a lot of attention is drown on the researches related to of Miller method applied high expansion cycle. For this study, high expansion cycles are formed and analyzed with the base view point of thermodynamics, and the features of each factors are also investigated. As a result of analysis, the expansion-compression ratio is expected with a decrease of effective compression ratio as intake valve closing time retarded, however, the decrease of mean effective pressure and its output is accompanied with the counterflow of intake air. Accordingly, as the consequence of such failure, it is expected that an alternative is needed for the realization of high expansion cycles, and the improvement over thermal efficiency. To materialize such cycle, the control system to delay the closing time of intake valve was designed and VVT, the 3 S/B low speed diesel engine, is applied to evaluate the efficiency. The result of the trial shows that there was no significant errors.

  • In this study, in the high expansion cycle was conduced by variable valve timing system composition to close intake valve late, and in the intake air reduction on the low compression was solved by supercharging pressure. In this wise, by constituting Diesel-Atkinson cycle, this study looked into a possibility of thermal efficiency improvement. As a result, there was improvement in thermal efficiency and output in a whole range of closing timing from ABDC $40^{\circ}$ to ABDC $80^{\circ}$. However, after ABDC $70^{\circ}$ of closing timing, the thermal efficiency increase was getting smaller. As the result of the study, the optimum intake valve closing timing was about ABDC $70^{\circ}$, high loading territory of engine was more effective than low loading territory, and engine operation in middle loading territory was stable. At this time, brake thermal efficiency was 12.5% higher than ordinary engine on average.

  • The thermodynamic characteristics of a combined cycle applied with a topping cycle such as a trilateral cycle at relatively high temperatures and a bottoming cycle such as an organic Rankine cycle at relatively low temperatures have been theoretically investigated. This is an electric generation system used to recover the waste heat of the exhaust gas from a diesel engine used for the propulsion of a large ship. As a result, when the boundary temperature between the topping and the bottoming cycles increased, the system efficiencies of energy and exergy were simultaneously maximized because the total exergy destruction rate (${\sum}\dot{E}_d$) and exergy loss ($\dot{E}_{out2}$) decreased, respectively. In the case of a marine diesel engine, the waste heat recovery electric generation system can be utilized for additional propulsion power, and the propulsion efficiency was found to be improved by an average of 9.17 % according to the engine load variation, as compared to the case with only the base engine. In this case, the specific fuel consumption and specific $CO_2$ emission of the diesel engine were reduced by an average of 8.4% and 8.37%, respectively.

  • The thermodynamic characteristics of a trilateral cycle with water as a working fluid have been theoretically investigated for an electric generation system to recover the waste heat of the exhaust gas from a diesel engine used for the propulsion of a large ship. As a result, when a heat source was given, the efficiencies of energy and exergy were maximized by the specific conditions of the pressure and mass flow rate for the working fluid at the turbine(expander) inlet. In this case, as the condensation temperature increased, the volume expansion ratio of the turbine could be reduced properly; however, the exergy loss of the heat source and exergy destruction of the condenser increased. Therefore, in order to recover the waste exergy from the topping cycle, the combined cycle with a bottoming cycle such as an organic Rankine cycle, which is utilized at relatively low temperatures, was found to be useful.

  • The present study composed a diesel-atkinson cycle of high expansion as a method of achieving high efficiency in diesel cycle engines. It also interpreted the cycle engine thermodynamically analysis to determine the possibility of the improvement of thermal efficiency and clarified the characteristics of several factors . According to the result of theoretical analysis, heat efficiency was highest when expansion-compression ratio Reど:1. In addition. diesel engines with high apparent compression ratio had higher expansion-compression ratio than otto engines and consequently their effect of high expansion was high. which in turn enhanced thermal efficiency. When the atkinson cycle was implemented in a real diesel engine by applying the miller cycle through the variation of the closing time of the intake valve, the effective compression ratio and the quantify of intake air decreased and as a result, the effect of high expansion was not observed. Accordingly. the atkinson cycle can be implemented when the quantity of intake air is compensated by supercharge and the effective compression ratio is maintained at its initial level through the reduction of the clearance volume. In this case. heat efficiency increased by $4.1\%$ at the same expansion-compression ratio when the apparent compression ratio was 20 and the fuel cut off ratio was 2. As explained above, when the atkinson cycle was used for diesel cycle. heat efficiency was improved. In order to realize high expansion through retarding the intake value closing time, the engine needs to be equipped with variable valve timing equipment, variable compression ratio equipment and supercharged Pressure equipment. Then a diesel-atkinson cycle engine is realized.

  • The closed cycle diesel propulsion system is free from the problem of the intake air, exhaust gas and their control that are associated with the conventional diesel propulsion system. The system is composed of a main engine, an exhaust cooler. a $CO_2$ scrubber and a $O_2$ mixer. In this paper, a hardware using microprocessor is proposed in order to monitor and control the oxygen and ratio of specific heat for underwater diesel propulsion system. Also simulation is carried out to ascertain the performance of proposed system.

  • In this study, a cycle simulation using a two-zone model is carried out to investigate the effect of intake charging conditions such as oxygen concentration, temperature and pressure on NO emissions in a DI diesel engine. The model is validated against measurements in terms of cylinder pressure, torque, BSFC and NOx emissions with 2902 cc DI diesel engine. Calculated results can be summarized as follows. The oxygen concentration in the intake charge is decreased with increasing of EGR rate and equivalence ratio. As the intake oxygen concentration is reduced, the combustion pressure and the burned gas temperature decrease and, as a result, NO formation decreases. Also, the results show that as the intake pressure increases and the intake temperature decreases, NO emissions are effectively reduced.
